I (Marty Grant) am not related to this family as far as I know, but Archibald Graham might be related to my ancestor Jeffrey Graham (1784) in some fashion. They did not live too far apart and there are certain bits of circumstantial evidence that may link them.
Archibald Graham was born before 1755 (per 1800 census). I would suspect he was born well before 1755, perhaps as early as the 1710's or 1720's. I don't know where he was born though Virginia is a possibility since he lived there prior to coming to Western North Carolina.
I don't know who Archibald's parents were. Research in Virginia may turn up some clues but I have not yet done any Graham research in Virginia.
Archibald Graham married Margaret --- presumably in the early 1700's (if she was his first and only wife). Margaret was born before 1755 (per 1800 census). I don't know where she was born, nor do I know what her maiden name might have been.
The first records I initially find for Archibald Graham are in Rutherford County, North Carolina, but they show him a resident of Franklin County Virginia at that time (1787). Franklin County was formed in 1785 (effective 1786) from Bedford, Botetourt and Henry Counties. Research in those three counties may turn up interesting information on the Archibald Graham family.
Doing a little "back tracking", I found Archibald Graham, James Graham (relationship unknown) and Arthur Graham (his son) listed on a 1786 Franklin County, Virginia Tax list. (Available online at Jeff Weaver's site). Archibald was taxed for 4 tithes (apparently himself and 3 slaves over 16), 1 white male over 21 (probably himself), 3 slaves over 16, 1 slave under 16, 4 horses and 3 cattle.
On 13 Aug 1787, Archibald Graham Sr made a deed of gift to his grand daughter Sarah Graham, daughter of "my son" William Graham and Susannah his wife of Franklin Co, VA. He gave her a negro girl named Mall about 9 years old. If Sarah should die without issue, Mall should go to the male heirs of "my two sons" Archibald and Arthur Graham. This deed was witnessed by Arthur Graham (son) and Jack Dillingham. It was proven in Court in October 1790. This deed does not show Archibald as a resident of Virginia, but another one the same day does (see below). (Recorded in Rutherford County Wills and Miscellaneous Records Book A page 49).
On the same date (13 Aug 1787), Archibald Graham Sr "of the Common Wealth of Virginia, County of Franklin", gave another deed of gift to grand daughter Sarah Graham, daughter of my son William and Susannah Graham. He gave one negro boy named Charles aged 11. If Sarah should die without heirs, Charles should go to the male heirs of my sons Archibald and Arthur Graham "after the death of my son William, provided he should survive his daughter." Witnesses were Archibald Graham Jr, Samuel (X) Ruph and Arthur Graham. Deed proven in Court in October 1790. (Recorded in Rutherford County Wills and Miscellaneous Records Book A page 50).
The two deeds above prove a great deal about Archibald's family, mainly that he was father to William (wife Susannah), Archibald Jr and Arthur Graham and that his family had connections in both Franklin Co, VA and Rutherford Co, NC.
Archibald Grayham was listed on the 1788 Franklin Co, VA Tax list (available online at the Reconstructed 1790 and 1800 Census). He was taxed for 1 white male over 16, 5 blacks over 16, 1 black over 12, and 6 horses. Archibald was the only Graham listed in Franklin County on this tax list.
There was an Archibald Graham listed on the 1790 census in Lincoln County, North Carolina, but I'm under the impression that it is Archibald Jr and not Sr, though I could be wrong about that. That means that Archibald Graham Sr was not listed on the 1790 census in North Carolina so I guess he was still in Virginia or else was in North Carolina but was not listed as a head of household (i.e. living with one of his children). The 1790 census for Virginia is lost. He was probably in Lincoln County, North Carolina already for he made a deed in October 1790 that listed him as a resident of Lincoln. His son Arthur Graham had 3 males over 16 in his household in 1790, one of them could easily be Archibald. He also had 5 females (no ages given), one of whom could be Margaret.
On 5 Oct 1790, Archibald Graham Sr of Lincoln Co, NC and William Graham of Rutherford Co, NC, in trust for Sarah Graham, daughter of William Graham and Susanna his wife. Archibald (for love, etc.) has give to Sarah Graham, his grand daughter, a tract of land on the South side of First Broad River being 300 acres originally granted to Robert Armstrong on 30 Oct 1765. Also another tract on the West side of Little Broad River being 400 acres granted to John Beaty 30 Oct 17--. Witnessed by Arthur Graham, and Archibald Dillingham. (Recorded in Rutherford County Wills and Miscellaneous Records Book A page 53).
Archibald Graham made his Will on 28 Apr 1798 in Lincoln County, North Carolina. He named his wife Margaret and children William Graham, John Graham, Ann wife of John Long, Archibald Dillingham, William, Ann, Elisabeth, Vetch and Arthur Dillingham (presumed grandchildren, though he does not say that). He also named son Archibald Graham, Arthur Graham and Arthur's son John Graham. Executor was son Arthur Graham and Walace Alexander. Witnessed by James Espey, Martin Roberts and John Carruth. There was no probate date. Mel Green has a full transcript of this Will online.
Archibald Graham was listed on the 1800 census in Lincoln County next to son Archibald Jr and just a couple of names from son Arthur Graham. Unfortunately this list was alphabetical (within communities apparently) so I can't be sure if they really were near each other. Apparently Archibald and Margaret were living alone in 1800 as no one else seems to be in their household.
1800 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)
1800 Lincoln Co, NC pg 896 Archibald Graham 00001-00001-0-0 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 45 & up (before 1755) Archibald GRAHAM (bef 1755) 1 Female(s) 45 & up (before 1755) Margaret Graham (bef 1755)
Archibald Graham was not listed on the 1810 census so I suspect both he and Margaret died in the 1800-1810 time period. It is possible they were both still alive but living with other relatives. However, since he made his Will back in 1798, I suspect he died shortly after 1800.
Using his Will and the several deeds of gift he made, Archibald Graham's family is pretty well documented. He is the proven father of William Graham of Rutherford Co, NC; John Graham, Arthur Graham and Archibald Graham Jr. His daughters were Ann Graham Long and apparently a daughter who married a Mr. Dillingham.
--- Graham, wife of --- Dillingham
William Graham was born before 1755 (per 1800 census), possibly somewhere in Virginia. He is a proven son of Archibald Graham by several sources including two 1787 deeds of gift and Archibald's 1798 Will.
William Graham married Susanna --- probably in Virginia and moved to Rutherford Co, NC. See their own page for additional information.
John Graham was born ca 1755/65 (per census analysis), possibly somewhere in Virginia. He is a proven son of Archibald Graham as named in Archibald's 1798 Will.
John Graham lived in Rutherford and Lincoln Co, NC. See his own page for additional information.
Arthur Graham was born ca 1755/65 (per census analysis), possibly somewhere in Virginia. He is a proven son of Archibald Graham as named in Archibald's 1798 Will.
Arthur Graham married Elizabeth --- and lived in Lincoln Co, NC. See his own page for additional information.
Archibald Graham was born ca 1755/65 (per census analysis), possibly somewhere in Virginia. He is a proven son of Archibald Graham as named in Archibald's 1798 Will.
Archibald Graham married Jane Beaty and lived in Lincoln Co, NC. See his own page for additional information.
Ann Graham was probably born in the 1750's or 1760's (based on her brothers approximate birth dates), possibly somewhere in Virginia. She is a proven daughter of Archibald Graham as named in Archibald's 1798 Will.
Other researchers show that Ann was previously married to a Mr. Beaty and that appears to be correct. I don't know who her first husband was though, but she married him before ca 1783.
On 17 Dec 1783 John Long obtained a marriage bond in Lincoln County to marry Ann Beaty. Daniel Cambell was bondsman.
There were Longs in Franklin Co, VA in the 1780's when the Grahams were there, but in my limited search I did not see a John Long listed on the 1786 or 1788 tax lists. He may not be connected to those Longs. More research is needed.
The 1790 census for Lincoln County, North Carolina shows two men named John Long living there. They could be father and son, or related in some other way or not related at all. There is no way to be sure which of these is the John Long married to Ann Graham. There was only one John Long listed there in 1800 and just a page away from the Grahams so apparently in the same general area. This John and wife were both aged 45 and up (born before 1755), so certainly could be John and Ann, though I can't be sure.
By 1810 the issue was seriously complicated for that census shows 5 men named John Long in Lincoln County.
Some meticulous Lincoln County research might help sort out which of these many John Longs is the one married to Ann Graham, and to show who their children might be. Mel Green has shared with me the Will of John Long and it shows he died between 1819 and 1822 leaving wife Ann and several children. (See a transcript on Mel's site).
An interesting note is that my uncle Lewis Graham (1789) of Buncombe County was associated with a John Long there. In 1817 John Long and Lewis Graham obtained a joint land grant on the French Broad River in Buncombe. I have no idea whether this is the same John Long or a relative of his. The Graham connection makes it seem like the same John or some member of his family.
--- Graham was probably born in the 1750's or 1760's (based on her brothers approximate birth dates), possibly somewhere in Virginia.
In his 1798 Will, Archibald Graham named several Dillingham's as heirs. He did not explicitly state their relationship but I think they were husband and children of a deceased daughter or at least that is the most likely explanation for their inclusion. The heirs as named were: Archibald Dillingham, William Dillingham, Ann Dillingham, Elisabeth Dillingham, Vetch Dillingham and Arthur Dillingham. Since Archibald was named first, he might be the son-in-law of Archibald Graham or he might be the oldest grandson.
There were Dillingham's in Franklin Co, VA in the 1780's when Archibald Graham was there.
There were no Dillingham's in Lincoln Co, NC for the 1790 census. Archibald Dillingham was a witness to Archibald Graham's deed dated 5 Oct 1790 in Rutherford County showing Archibald Graham as a resident of Lincoln. The Dillingham's must have been in Lincoln by that time.
I have not been able to find much about the children so far. Arthur Dillingham was in the census for Lincoln in 1810 and in neighboring Rutherford in 1820 and 1830. More research is needed.
