A note about sources

I (Marty Grant) am not related to the Jerusha Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in her though.

Jerusha Grant was listed on the 1830 census in Wayne Co, NC and this is the only record we have for this person.

1830 census analysis (based on available evidence):

1830 Wayne County, NC pg 510 Jerusha Grant 1000100000000-1001100100000
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 20-29 (1800-1810)
1 Male(s) 0-4 (1825-1830)
1 Female(s) 50-59 (1770-1780)
1 Female(s) 20-29 (1800-1810)
1 Female(s) 15-19 (1810-1815)
1 Female(s) 0-4 (1825-1830)

Unfortunately, the 1830 census was alphabetical, but only within each district, so while we can't tell who Jerusha's exact neighbors were, we do know she lived in the same area as all the other Grants (Walnut Creek, in New Hope District).

At a glance, it would be easy to assume Jerusha was a widow of some Grant who died prior to 1830. Backing up to the 1820 census, we can narrow the list of candidates:

  1. Daniel Grant of 1820 was still around in 1830, so not him
  2. Elisha Grant of 1820 was not found in 1830, so a possibility.
  3. Ephraim Grant of 1820 was still around in 1830, so not him
  4. Jesse Grant of 1820 was still around in 1830, so not him
  5. Thomas Grant of 1820 was still around in 1830, so not him

The above list only points to Elisha Grant as a possibility. However, he isn't the one. We already know from other records that Elisha died in early 1830, but that his widow (Susanna Gaylord, whom he married in 1817) was still alive, and she was listed as head of household in Wayne Co, NC in 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860. So that means the only obvious candidate isn't the one.

That leaves two other possibilities. One is that she was a single mother, which I doubt for some reason (mainly because she didn't show up on any other census records). The other possibility is that she is a widow of someone who wasn't listed in Wayne Co, NC in 1820, either because they were missed, or just didn't live in Wayne County at that time. There are no prime candidates in nearby counties in 1820.

I have another possibility, that is highly speculative, so take it for what it is worth. We know from other sources that Thomas Grant (listed in 1810, 1820 and 1830) was married as early as ca 1805. We also know that ca 1828 he had a relationship with Winny Mozingo, that produced twin sons (Mark and Thomas Mozingo). Based on this, assuming he was still married at the time, he could have been separated from his wife, and in 1830 they were in different households.

In 1820 Thomas had one boy aged 10-15 (1804/10), 2 boys under 10 (1810/20), 2 girls 10-15 (1804/10), and 2 girls under 10 (1810/20). In his 1830 household, none of those were still with him. However, in Jerusha's household, she had a boy age 20-29 (1800/10), one girl age 20-29 (1800/10), and one girl age 15-19 (1810/15). These three were with Jerusha in 1830, plus one boy and one girl under 5 (1825/30). The three older kids with Jerusha are perfect matches for some of the kids with Thomas in 1820.

Thomas Grant's listing of 1830 looks like a new marriage for him, younger wife, and new young children, however, it could be that the people with him are actually Winny Mozingo and her children. Their sons Mark and Thomas Mozingo (born 1828/29) could be the two boys in Thomas Grant's 1830 household aged under 5 (born 1825/30). It is a perfect fit.

Like I said, all of that is highly speculative. I have no evidence at all that Jerusha Grant was the wife (or ex-wife) of Thomas Grant, but it would answers some questions. Court records may be the key. I haven't yet gone through the Wayne County Court minutes, though I plan to at some time.

The extra people in Jerusha Grant's 1830 household could be a son of hers and his wife and their young children, or a daughter of hers and her husband and their young children. Without further evidence we can't really say.
