A note about sources

I (Marty Grant) am not related to the Thomas Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in him though. It is very possible that his wife was Lucy Edwards, and she was a sister to my ancestor David Edwards. If so, that would make Thomas Grant my Uncle by marriage.

Thomas Grant was born ca 1780/84 (per the various census records). He may be a son of Elisha Grant, but I have no strong compelling evidence. He could be a son of William Grant instead. I'm basing Elisha as his possible father on the fact that they lived near one another, and Elisha did seem to have a son roughly this age. Some solid evidence would be nice, but I have little to go on so far. I don't know who Thomas Grant married, but I strongly suspect that his wife was my Aunt Lucy Edwards, who was a daughter of my ancestor John Edwards of Wayne Co, NC. John Edwards made his Will on 1 Aug 1810 and named among his children, a daughter "Lucy Grant". The only Grant households in 1810 Wayne Co, NC were Stephen, Thomas, Charity and Micajah. Stephen was married to my Aunt Patience Roberts, "Charity" is probably actually Elisha Grant, and "Micajah" is Michael Grant. The reason I suspect Thomas is the one married to Lucy, is because Thomas Grant appeared as a witness in the 1831 divorce records of David Edwards (brother of Lucy Edwards Grant). That doesn't prove they were brothers-in-law, but it seems a good possibility. Thomas appeared on the 1810 census in Wayne Co, NC next door to Stephen Grant. They seemed to be in the Indian Springs district, but it could be New Hope instead. There seems to be no wife living with Thomas at this time. Either she had died, or was just left off for some reason.

Thomas Grant was listed on the War of 1812 Muster Roll for Wayne Co, NC. Thomas Grant was listed on the 1820 census in Wayne Co, NC. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetized, so we can't tell where he lived nor who his neighbors were. He either had a new wife by this time, or the same wife, if she was just left off of the 1810 list for some reason (there are lots of problems with the 1810 census in Wayne Co, NC in my opinion).

Thomas Grant was listed on the 1830 census in Wayne Co, NC. Once again the census was in alpha order, so we can't tell who his neighbors were, but it was only alpha within each district, so we can tell where they lived (approximately). He was in Captain Whitfield's district, which is roughly the same as New Hope District, I believe.

1830 census analysis (based on available evidence):

1830 Wayne County, NC pg 510 Thomas Grant 2100001000000-0100010000000
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 40-49 (1780-1790)	Thomas GRANT (1780/84) s/o Elisha
1 Male(s) 5-9 (1820-1825)	Son?
2 Male(s) 0-4 (1825-1830)	Son? Thomas Mozingo (1828/29) son
					Son? Mark Mozingo (1828/29) son
1 Female(s) 30-39 (1790-1800)	Wife? or Winny Mozingo (1799/1800)
1 Female(s) 5-9 (1820-1825)	Daughter? Louisa Mozingo (1819/20)

The 1830 census entry is the last record I have for Thomas Grant. He either died after that or moved away. About the year 1828 or 1829 Thomas Grant apparently had a relationship with Winny Mozingo (daughter of Pierce Mozingo and Sally Graddy) and she had two sons Mark and Thomas Mozingo (apparently twins, born ca 1828/29). Gayle Licari tells me there are court records showing that Thomas Grant was their father. I haven't seen it yet, but will get to those eventually. The 1830 census shows Sarah Mozingo (widow of Pierce) listed in the same district with Thomas Grant. She had a girl Winny's age living with her, and also two boys under 5 (born 1825/30). It is easy to accept this is Winny and her two sons residing with Winny's mother. It is also possible that Winny was the female with Thomas Grant in 1830, and the two boys under 5 with him were her sons by Thomas Grant. Either way would work. Other records will be needed to properly sort this out.

There was no sign of Thomas Grant on the 1840 census. There are several Grant's in Wayne Co, NC in 1840 and 1850 who could be children of Thomas Grant. I just don't have enough evidence to place them in his family yet. Winny Mozingo was listed as a head of household in Wayne Co, NC in 1840, 1850 and 1860. Always near the Grant families.
