I (Marty Grant) am not a blood relative of Stephen Grant, as far as I know, but his wife Patience Roberts was my Aunt (5th Great Grand Aunt). Her brother Henry Roberts was my ancestor. See the Roberts page for more on that family.

Stephen Grant was born ca 1765/84 (per 1810 census) presumably in Wayne Co, NC.

I have no real proof of his parentage, but I  think he could be a son of William Grant as they were neighbors. It is also possible that Stephen's father was Elisha Grant instead, but I can't be sure. There just isn't enough evidence either way, but for some reason I feel William is more likely than Elisha, mainly based on census analysis. This isn't conclusive though.

For the 1790 census, Stephen would have been between 6 and 25 years old, so if listed, he would be in the "under 16" age group (born ca 1774/90) or 16 and up (born before 1774).. William Grant did have 1 apparent son 16 and up, and 3 under 16. One of these might be Stephen.

For the 1800 census, Stephen would have been between 16 and 35 years old. If enumerated, he could be in either the 16-25 age group, or the 26-44 age group. I didn't find any listings that seem to fit with Stephen in it.

Stephen Grant married Patience Roberts, daughter of John Roberts and Nancy Smith, ca 1800/1803 in Wayne Co, NC. The Roberts and Grant families were neighbors on Walnut Creek in what is now New Hope Township.

Stephen Grant and his wife Patience were named through out John Roberts Estate papers beginning 3 Mar 1803 in Wayne Co, NC, and listed as heirs, she being his daughter. They inherited land, and possibly slaves as well.

On 8 Jan 1804 Stephen Grant purchased 22 acres from Joshua Garris Sr. The land was on the North Side of the Neuse, and bordered John Roberts and others. (Wayne Co, NC Deed Book 8 page 106).

On 6 Nov 1809, Stephen Grant received a State land grant for 130 acres in Wayne County on Walnut Pocoson, entered 24 Dec 1807. (Wayne Co, NC Deed Book 6 page 412).

On 26 Jan 1810 Stephen Grant sold his 130 acre land grant (received 6 Nov 1809) to Benjamin Smith. (Wayne Co, NC Deed Book 9 page 268).

Stephen Grant was listed on the 1810 census in Wayne County, he was listed next door to Thomas Grant, who was either his 1st cousin, or his brother. His other neighbors included many who were known to live on Walnut Creek and Walnut Pocoson.

1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

Analysis:
1 Male(s) 26-44 (1765-1784)	Stephen GRANT (1765/84) s/o William Grant
1 Female(s) 26-44 (1765-1784)	Patience ROBERTS Grant (1784/85) wife
2 Female(s) 0-9 (1800-1810)	Louisa GRANT (1807) daughter
					Daughter?

The 1810 census shows Stephen Grant with 8 slaves. I never found any other Grant's before 1810 with slaves. He may have inherited them from his father-in-law John Roberts as he had 9 slaves in 1800.

On 20 Nov 1810 Stephen Grant received a State land grant for 76 acres on Walnut Pocoson. The land had been entered by him on 24 May 1808. (Wayne Co, NC Deed Book 6 page 472).

On 9 Jan 1811 Stephen Grant sold his 76 acre land grant (received 20 Nov 1810) to his brother-in-law Owen Roberts. (Wayne Co, NC Deed Book 9 page 314).

On 21 Jan 1811 Stephen Grant sold three slaves to Alexander Carter in Duplin Co, NC. They were named: Cherry age 30, Bryant, her child, age 2 and Milley age 5 weeks. (Duplin County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions Abstracts of Minutes 1809-1811 Part 8 by Joyce Jones Franks, 1993)

In Feb 1811 Stephen Grant purchased 300 acres on the south side of Bear Creek (in Walnut Pocoson) from William Smith. Witnesses included his brother-in-law Jesse Harper. (Wayne Co, NC Deed Book 9 page 349).

On 19 Jul 1811 Patience Grant and Stephen Grant sold 444 acres to Isaac Roberts (brother of Patience Grant). The land was described as being on the west side of Walnut Creek and being her (Patience) part of her father's estate. The deed also sells "one dividing" of 22 acres formerly of Joshua Garris (this 22 acres was land sold by Garris to Stephen Grant in 1804). My first reading of the above deed made it look like Joshua Garris was the father of Patience Grant, as it mentions "her father's land", then names Joshua Garris in the next section, but it doesn't say who her father was. (Wayne Co, NC Deed Book 9 page 371).

On 28 Jul 1811 Stephen Grant sold 35 acres to William Smith. The land is described as being half of the undivided 70 acres whereon Stephen Grant formerly lived, and it being the said Stephen Grant's part, Isaac Roberts' part and Jesse Harper's part. (It doesn't say part of what, but it is referring to the Estate of John Roberts). (Wayne Co, NC Deed Book 9 page 360).

On 17 Jun 1813 Stephen Grant sold 125 acres to Allen Smith, land on the west side of Bear Creek "where Stephen Grant now lives", and also half of a 50 acres "pocoson tract". This appears to be 100 acres of his 300 acre land purchased from William Smith in Feb 1811, plus 25 acres from somewhere else. (Wayne Co, NC Deed Book 10 page 67).

On 18 Aug 1813 Stephen Grant sold 200 acres to Major Croom, land on the west side of Bear Creek, and also one half of the pocoson land (25 acres). This seems to be the remainder of the 300 acres purchased from William Smith in Feb 1811. (Wayne Co, NC Deed Book 10 page 204).

By my calculations, the 18 Aug 1813 deed left Stephen and Patience with no land. I didn't find any transactions related to the eight slaves that he had listed on the 1810 census. I'm reasonably sure they had come from John Roberts Estate, as he had 9 slaves in 1800.

Stephen Grant was listed in the Court records in 1814 as having been found guilty of forgery. His punishment was to stand in the pillory for one hour and to receive 39 lashes on his bare back and to be imprisoned 6 months. This seems pretty harsh, and mysteriously, this is the last record we have for Stephen Grant. I don't know what happened to him.

Stephen, nor his wife Patience were listed on the 1820 census, not in Wayne or any other North Carolina county.  There was a Stephen Grant in 1820 Onslow Co, NC, but he is a different person (he was in Onslow in 1810 also).

Stephen, nor Patience had reappeared by 1830. However, there was a younger Stephen Grant on the 1830 Wayne Co, NC census, relation to the elder Stephen is unknown, but he isn't his son.

The 1840 census also showed no sign of Stephen or Patience.

However, the 1850 census showed Patience to still be alive, and she was in Moore Co, NC (where several of her siblings had moved to in the 1810-1830 timeframe. She was residing with the Garret Thompson family. I'm not sure how she is related to them, but her daughter Louisa Grant had married Jesse Thompson, so these could be grandchildren.

Patience didn't appear on the 1860 census, so I suppose she had died by then.

Children

We know very little about Stephen and Patience Grant's family. The 1810 indicated two daughters, one of which was probably Louisa Grant (c1807), as told to me by Kay Carter, a descendant. I don't know who the other daughter was, nor if they had any additional children. The data listed below on the Jesse Thompson family is courtesy of Kay Carter.
