I (Marty Grant) am not related to the Stephen Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in him though.
Stephen Grant was born ca 1804/05 in Wayne Co, NC per the 1850 census. He lived in Indian Springs Township of Wayne Co, NC.
There were two Stephen Grant's listed on the 1850 Wayne Co, NC census. One married to Mary, the other to Anna. Both had children older than 10 years, so both should have been listed on the 1840 census in Wayne Co, NC. However, there was only one Stephen listed in 1840, and he isn't a perfect match for either of the Stephen Grant's of 1850!
Stephen Grant married Anna --- before 1834, as their oldest child Sarah was born about then. The 1830 census shows Stephen age 15-19 (or born ca 1810/15) with a wife age 20-29 (born ca 1800/10). It isn't entirely clear if that is this Stephen Grant (wife Anna) or the other Stephen Grant (wife Mary). He was listed on page 510 which covers New Hope District. He is listed on the top line, and the totals carried over from the next page are also listed on that line making it very difficult to read. This particular census was alphabetical, but only within each district.
1830 census analysis (based on available evidence):
1830 Wayne County, NC pg 510 Stephen Grant 0001000000000-0000100000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 15-19 (1810-1815) Stephen GRANT (1810/15) s/o ? 1 Female(s) 20-29 (1800-1810) Wife?
I can't be sure whether the above is the Stephen (wife Anna) under study on this page or the other Stephen Grant (wife Mary).
In 1840, only one Stephen Grant family is found, and he is listed on page 208 (New Hope District) next to Jesse Grant. Neither of the Stephen's in 1850 appeared to be in New Hope District. This 1840 house doesn't exactly match either Stephen Grant household, but it seems to be a closer match to the Stephen under study here (wife Anna).
1840 census analysis (based on available evidence):
1840 Wayne County, NC pg 208 Stephen Grant 1000100000000-0010100000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 20-29 (1810-1820) Stephen GRANT 1 Male(s) 0-4 (1835-1840) Son? 1 Female(s) 20-29 (1810-1820) Wife? 1 Female(s) 10-14 (1825-1830) Daughter?
On the 1850 census, Stephen Grant is listed in the district South of the Neuse River. He was clearly what is now Indian Springs Township (based on some of his neighbors).

Stephen and Anna's land owning neighbors in 1850 included William Kornegay, Elisha Pipkin, James Dunn, William Vernon and Hepsey Broadhurst (an apparent widow). Of these, William Kornegay, Elisha Pipkin were found in 1840 in close proximity to one another in Indian Springs District. James Dunn and William Vernon weren't found in 1840 Wayne Co, NC. However, I think it is clear that this particular Stephen Grant lived (at least in 1850) in Indian Springs township, probably close to Hines Crossroad or closer to Mount Olive.
In 1860, neither Stephen Grant of 1850 was still in Wayne Co, NC. However, a Stephen Grant did appear in neighboring Lenoir County in 1860, living in Moseley Hall District (which borders New Hope District of Wayne Co, NC). Moseley Hall includes the Town of La Grange. This Stephen Grant was age 45 (c1814/15) and his wife was named Mary also age 45 (c1814/15), so this part at least is a good match to the other Stephen of 1850 Wayne Co, NC.
I don't know where Stephen and Anna were after the 1850 census. I found most of his 1850 neighbors still in Wayne Co, NC in the 1860 census listed in Indian Springs District, Jericho Post Office. I did find their son James Grant in 1860 Wayne Co, NC also in Indian Springs District.
Children of Stephen and Anna Grant are per the 1850 census.
Sarah Grant was born ca 1833/34 in Wayne Co, NC. She was with her parents in 1850 Wayne Co, NC. I didn't find her in 1860.
James Grant was born ca 1839/39 in Wayne Co, NC. He was home with his parents in 1850 Wayne Co, NC census. He married Josephine Bowden on 4 Jul 1860 in Wayne Co, NC, with the marriage at Josiah Smith's house. They were listed in Josiah Smith's household in the 1860 census in Indian Springs District, Sleepy Creek Post office.
