A note about sources

I (Marty Grant) am not related to the Stephen Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in him though.

Stephen Grant was born ca 1810/15 or ca 1819/20 per the 1850 census, presumably in Wayne Co, NC. In 1850 he was only five houses from Richard D. Grant, who could easily be his older brother.

There were two Stephen Grant's listed on the 1850 Wayne Co, NC census. One married to Mary, the other to Anna. Both had children older than 10 years, so both should have been listed on the 1840 census in Wayne Co, NC. However, there was only one Stephen listed in 1840, and he isn't a perfect match for either of the Stephen Grant's of 1850!

Stephen Grant married Mary --- before 1831, as their oldest child Eliza was born about then. This is at odds with Stephen's 1850 age of 30 years old, as he would only have been 11 when Eliza was born. I have a feeling there are several things wrong with the 1850 census entry for this family. The 1830 census shows Stephen age 15-19 (or born ca 1810/15) with a wife age 20-29 (born ca 1800/10). It isn't entirely clear if that is this Stephen Grant (wife Mary) or the other Stephen Grant (wife Anna). He was listed on page 510 which covers New Hope District. He is listed on the top line, and the totals carried over from the next page are also listed on that line making it very difficult to read. This particular census was alphabetical, but only within each district.

1830 census analysis (based on available evidence):

1830 Wayne County, NC pg 510 Stephen Grant 0001000000000-0000100000000
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 15-19 (1810-1815)	Stephen GRANT (1810/15) s/o ?
1 Female(s) 20-29 (1800-1810)	Wife?

I can't be sure whether the above is the Stephen (wife Mary) under study on this page or the other Stephen Grant (wife Anna).

In 1840, only one Stephen Grant family is found, and he is listed on page 208 (New Hope District) next to Jesse Grant. Neither of the Stephen's in 1850 appeared to be in New Hope District. This 1840 house doesn't exactly match either Stephen Grant household, but it seems to be a closer match to the Stephen under study here (wife Mary).

1840 census analysis (based on available evidence):

1840 Wayne County, NC pg 208 Stephen Grant 1000100000000-0010100000000
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 20-29 (1810-1820)	Stephen GRANT
1 Male(s) 0-4 (1835-1840)	Son?
1 Female(s) 20-29 (1810-1820)	Wife?
1 Female(s) 10-14 (1825-1830)	Daughter?

On the 1850 census, Stephen Grant is listed in the district North of the Neuse River living in very close proximity to the Richard D. Grant and Patience Grant families. Patience Grant was a single mother, and born ca 1823/24. Richard's neighbors in 1840 indicated he was in Waynesboro District (now Goldsboro Township). It isn't clear if that is the case in 1850 though.

Stephen's landowning neighbors in 1850, including Thomas Howell (5 houses away) and Gary (or Gray) Smith (next door) were both listed in Davis District on the 1840 census. There was no sign of any Grant's in that district. I believe this is now known as Buck Swamp Township. West and North of Goldsboro with the Little River as the southern border, and Nahunta Creek as the northern border. I'm not entirely sure that is where this Stephen Grant lived, since he didn't own any land, but it seems that way based on his neighbors in 1850.

In 1860, neither Stephen Grant of 1850 was still in Wayne Co, NC. However, a Stephen Grant did appear in neighboring Lenoir County in 1860, living in Moseley Hall District (which borders New Hope District of Wayne Co, NC). Moseley Hall includes the Town of La Grange. This Stephen Grant was age 45 (c1814/15) and his wife was named Mary also age 45 (c1814/15), so this part at least is a good match. However, they only have two children listed, and their names do not match any of the children from 1850.  Mary age 13 is a nearly perfect match in age for Courtney of 1850, and Martha age 11 is a near perfect match for Nancy of 1850. I don't know where the rest of Stephen and Mary's children went. Nor am I entirely sure this is actually them.
