A note about sources

I (Marty Grant) am not related to the Richard Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in him though.

Richard D. Grant was born ca 1804/05, presumably in Wayne Co, NC. I don't know who his parents were. His mother might have been Smithy Parker Grant (daughter of James Parker and Tabitha). I don't know which Grant that Smithy was married to. James Parker's Will of 22 Dec 1809 mentioned Smithy Grant, but didn't specifically refer to her as a daughter. He also named Polly Lawhorn, and others including a James Parker.

Those three names (James Parker, Polly Lawhorn and Smithy Grant) seem to be significant in regards to a Wayne Co, NC Deed dated 23 May 1831 when James R. Parker, Henry Lawhorn and Richard D. Grant sold land to Major Uzzell. I haven't yet gotten the original deed (Book 15 page 199), but it looks like they are all heirs in common and are selling their inheritance to Major Uzzell. Richard D. Grant was not old enough to have been married by 1809, so he wasn't the husband of Smithy Parker Grant. The only choice (without further evidence) is that he is her son.

In 1810 census James Parker was listed as age 26-44 (born 1765/84) and was only a few houses from Thomas Grant. We don't know who Thomas Grant's wife was, so it could easily be Smithy Parker. Thomas Grant did have a son age 0-9 in 1810 (born ca 1800/10) which fits for Richard born ca 1804/05. In the 1820 census, Thomas Grant was the only household to have someone in that age group. He had one male age 10-15 (born ca 1804/1810), which is also a perfect fit for Richard. By the time of the 1830 census, Thomas Grant no longer had any males that age with him, but Richard was not listed elsewhere as a head of household. The household of Jerusha Grant in 1820 had a male that age. It has occurred to me that Jerusha Grant was the wife of Thomas Grant and that they were separated due to his known extra marital activities. This is speculative though. She could be a widow of someone else. However, she is the only one in 1830 who has  room for Richard D. Grant in her household.

The 1840 census shows Richard D. Grant on page 214 in Waynesboro District. He wasn't near anyone else known to be connected to the Grant family. There was a John Grant (wife Mary) listed in Waynesboro District a few pages away. (More on him below).

1840 census analysis (based on available evidence):

1840 Wayne County, NC pg 214 Richard D. Grant 0000010000000-0001010000000
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 30-39 (1800-1810)	Richard D. GRANT (1804/05)
1 Female(s) 30-39 (1800-1810)	Wife? (1800/10)
1 Female(s) 15-19 (1820-1825)	Daughter? Sister? Sister-in-law?

On 2 Nov 1844, Richard Grant was one of the purchasers at the Estate of John Grant (wife Mary). John was about the same age (born 1800-10) as Richard, and could easily be his brother. In 1840 John was also in Waynesboro District, but a couple of pages away from Richard.

On the 1850 census, Richard Grant is listed in the district North of the Neuse River living in very close proximity to the Stephen Grant and Patience Grant families. Patience Grant was a single mother, and born ca 1823/24, so could easily be the 15-19 year old female with Richard and wife in 1840. In the 1850 census, Richard had no wife or children listed with him, but only two other people of unknown relation to him. His neighbors in 1850 are the same (more or less) from 1840, so he was probably still in Waynesboro District. This would have to be the area now known as Goldsboro Township, since there isn't a Waynesboro District anymore. The Town of Waynesboro is just west of modern Goldsboro.

(Note: The dates at the end of each line are not part of the original census, but are approximate birth years based on age)
