I (Marty Grant) am not related to the Patience Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in her though.
Patience Grant was born ca 1823/24, presumably in Wayne Co, NC. She was apparently a single mother. In 1850 she was listed next door to Stephen and Mary Grant. Stephen was just a little older than her, and could easily be her brother. They were both just a few houses from Richard D. Grant who was older than them both. He could also be a brother.
Patience did not appear on the 1840 census, but she would have only been about 16 then. Richard Grant, who was her neighbor in 1850, had a girl her age with him in 1840. That could be her, if she was his sister, or even his daughter. There were other households in 1840 that had a girl her age, so we can't be sure this is her with Richard, but the fact that she is near him in 1850 makes it more reasonable.
On the 1850 census, Patience Grant and her son Henry are listed in the district North of the Neuse River living in the W.M. Musgrove household, along with quite a few other people (must be a boarding house). This house was next door to the Stephen Grant family and just 6 houses from Richard D. Grant.

Patience was still in Wayne Co, NC in 1860 (unlike Richard and Stephen Grant who were both gone by then). She was listed in the Town of Goldsboro. Her son "Henry" (age 3 in 1850) was listed as "William" age 13, and she had another child named John, age 6 in 1860. There were no other Grants in close proximity to her in 1860. This seems to be the same area she was living in on the 1850 census.
