I (Marty Grant) am not related to the John Grant family as far as I know.
John Grant was born ca 1784/85 in NC (per the 1850 census). I'd wager he was actually born in South Carolina though.
I don't know who his parents were. Although he later lived in Cleveland County, North Carolina (formed in 1841 from Lincoln and Rutherford), I don't think he was there before its formation. My own Grant line (William Grant) lived in neighboring Rutherford County, but I don't feel like there is any connection between them.
John Grant married Harriett Allen before ca 1829, probably in South Carolina. She was born ca 1803/04 in North Carolina (per 1850 census). I don't know what the proof of her maiden name is. Paula Grant told me this, but I didn't get the source from her.
There were three John Grants listed on the 1840 Chester District, SC census index. One of these is probably this John Grant.
They were listed on the 1850 census in Cleveland Co, NC. They were residing with William Hicks (c1801) and Nancy A. Hicks (c1829). Everyone was listed as being born in NC. However, I've found no trace of the John Grant family in NC prior to 1850. I've assumed that Nancy A., wife of William Hicks, was a daughter of John Grant and Harriett, based only on them all living together in 1850. Even though everyone is listed as born in NC, that may not be correct.

I didn't find these folks on the 1860 census in Cleveland Co, NC. There were two John Grants listed in 1860 Chester Dist, SC index, one of whom might be this same John.
About a year ago David McCarley posted some of Paula Grant's South Carolina Grant research to the Grant-L list and there was data on a John Grant and wife Harriett Allen of Chester District, SC. I'm fairly sure this is the same family I'm trying to figure out here. That John Grant she spoke of was a War of 1812 soldier (from SC) and died in Chester Co, SC in the 1870's. Her data didn't go beyond their names though. I tracked down Paula to discuss various SC Grant families, and found out that she hadn't done any research in several years. I didn't ask her about this family specifically.
Much more research will be needed in the SC records to figure out the rest of this family. My SC research is at a standstill right now.
John Grant probably had several children, but at present, I have only Nancy A.
