I (Marty Grant) am a 2nd cousin, 5 times removed of John Grant.

John Grant was born 24 Apr 1829 (based on a supposed Family Bible, and also proven by his tombstone) in Rutherford County, North Carolina.

John Grant was probably named after his father.

John Grant is a proven child of John Grant and Sarah Morris. He is a proven child, as named in the estate records of his father.

John Grant seems to be home with his parents for the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and still apparently home in 1840, aged 10-14 (born ca 1825/30).

His parents died in the 1840's, and he may have spent a few years living with older siblings.

On 7 Aug 1849, John Grant married Evaline Johnson in Monroe County, Tennessee. A published version of Monroe marriages shows her name as "Emiline Robinson". I have not seen the original marriage record, but census and other records prove her given name was "Evaline" and not "Emaline", and her death certificate shows her maiden name as Johnson. Evaline was born 2 May 1832 (proven by tombstone), in Monroe County, Tennessee, daughter of Benjamin Johnson and Evaline --- (proven by Evaline Johnson Grant's death certificate).

John and Evaline were listed on the 1850 census in Monroe County, Tennessee in the 15th Civil District.

I have not been able to locate John Grant and family on the 1860 census. The birth places of his children born during this timeframe are contradictory, reporting on one census as born in Tennessee, and on another census as being born in North Carolina. This family did move to the Graham County, North Carolina area later on, so it is possible that they were moving back and forth during the census taker's visit, and got missed from the 1860 census. Or, it is also possible that they are listed in Monroe or possibly Blount County, Tennessee, and I have just missed them. They were not in North Carolina in 1860, or at least I was unable to locate them.

John Grant was named in the 8 Nov 1860 Court record pertaining to his father's Estate. It gives him as "John" age 38. However, it did not state his county nor state of residence.

As just mentioned, John Grant and family seems to have moved back and forth between Monroe County, Tennessee and Cherokee (now Graham) County, North Carolina. This seems to have gone on throughout the 1850's and 1860's.

John and family were (back?) in Monroe County, Tennessee for the 1870 census. They were in District 17 as were several of his siblings, some fairly nearby. There is a "Casadie Grant" age 18 (born ca 1852) residing with them. He is listed as a Farm Laborer, but I have been unable to identify him. I would assume that he is a nephew or somehow closely related.

The family moved to neighboring Graham County, North Carolina before 1873, in the Yellow Creek township area.

John Grant performed at least three marriages in Graham County in the year 1877.

Sometime after 1877, but before 1880, John Grant moved his family to neighboring Cherokee County, North Carolina, settling somewhere in Valleytown Township. I don't know precisely where they lived, but this is the north eastern part of Cherokee County, bordering Graham County.

For the 1880 census, John Grant and family were listed in Graham County, in Valleytown Township.

Sometime between 1880 and 1886, they family moved back to the Yellow Creek area of Graham County.

John Grant died 19 Feb 1886 in Graham County. He was buried at the Jenkins Cemetery, and his tombstone gives his birth and death dates.

At first glance, Widow Evaline Johnson Grant did not seem to be listed on the 1900 census, though I finally realized she was there in Graham County still, but mistakenly listed as Elizabeth Grant. She is there in Yellow Creek Township with two grandchildren residing with her.

Evaline apparently accompanied son Ben to Cherokee County, North Carolina, for she died on 23 May 1918, and is buried at Valleytown Cemetery.

Children

John and Evaline had 11 children (per the various census records, and confirmed by Evaline's 1900 census entry showing she was the mother of 11 children, 9 still living at that time). Most of these are proven by the various census records.

William M. Grant (c1850)

Cordelia Grant (c1852)

Mary Jane Grant (1855)

John "Jack" Grant (c1858)

Sarah Evelyn Grant (1860)

Aletha Melissa Grant (1863)

Nancy Catherine "Kittie" Grant (c1864)

Benjamin P. Grant (1867)

Amanda Grant (c1868)

Edgar Francis Grant (1873)

Minnie Grant (c1876)

William M. Grant was born ca 1849/50 (supported by several census and marriage records). He was probably born in Monroe County, Tennessee.

William was not home with his parents in 1850, but a William Grant aged 4 months was listed (but not nearby) in Monroe County, Tennessee living with a Tucker family. He was the only Grant in that household. Is this the same William? If so, why was he with them, and not his parents? Here is the listing just in case this is him:

Keep in mind that the above listing may reflect some other William Grant.

I don't yet have the 1860 census records for William's parents, so I can't say if he was home or not.

William Grant was with his parents in 1870 in Monroe County, Tennessee ("William" age 19, born TN).

William Grant married Candis Elliott on 7 Feb 1870 in neighboring Blount County, Tennessee. Candis was born ca 1852/53 (per 1880 census), presumably in Blount County, Tennessee. According to John G. Grant, her parents are Isaac Elliott and Rutha Laney (who married in 1845 in Haywood Co, NC).

William and Candis moved to Georgia briefly in the early 1870's. I don't know what county, but I'd presume it was Union, Towns or Fannin or some other NC border county.

In the mid to late 1870's, they returned briefly to Tennessee, then over to neighboring Graham County, North Carolina before 1880.

They were listed on the 1880 census in Graham County, in Cheoah Township.

Candis Elliott Grant died on 20 Feb 1886 (per John G. Grant) in Graham County. I don't know where she is buried.

On 17 May 1886, William Grant married Lucinda J. Millsaps in Graham County. This was actually Lucinda Jane Farr, widow of Jesse Millsaps. Lucinda was born ca 1846/47 in Blount Co, TN, daughter of John Farr and Sarah Crisp. Her first husband (Jesse Millsaps) and she were married in 1875. William and Lucinda's marriage record gave his age as 35 (born ca 1850/51), and hers also as 35. They were married by Henry M. Ditmore and at his home.

Lucinda apparently died soon after the marriage, and sometime before 5 Oct 1887. I don't know where she was buried.

On 5 Oct 1887, William M. Grant married Caroline Carringer in Graham County. Their marriage record gave his age as 37 (born ca 1849/50), and hers as 18 (born ca 1868/69). Married by George Orr, minister, and at his house.

Caroline was born April 1870 (per 1900 census), daughter of William Carringer and Louisa ---.

William M. Grant died on 27 Apr 1894 (per John G. Grant) in Graham County, North Carolina. I don't know where he is buried.

Caroline, now widowed, was listed on the 1900 census in Graham County. She was residing with her brother-in-law Samuel Rogers. Her youngest child was born a few years after the death of her husband, but still had the Grant name. His birth date is either wrong, or else he was born out of wedlock.

On 1 Mar 1901, widow Callie Grant married Burt Rich in Graham County. Their marriage record gave her age as 35, and his as 50. They were married by R. L. Wilson at his house. Burt was born ca 1855/56 in Cherokee Co, NC, son of John and Elizabeth (---) Rich.

I found Burton Rich on the 1910 census in Graham County, two houses from step-son Walter Grant in Yellow Creek Township. He was living with the William B. Shope family, listed as a hired hand. His wife was not with him, but his marital status showed him married 8 years (and this being his 2nd marriage).

I don't have them on the 1920 census yet.

William M. Grant and his first wife Candis Elliott had two proven children: William Harvey Grant (1874) and John Franklin Grant (1877), both of whom were with them in 1880. I also believe that Dixie M. Grant (1880), married Jethro Hooper, and Webster Grant (1883) are their children. Webster was a grandchild of John & Evaline, so he must be a son of one of their sons, and William seems the most likely candidate. I have no direct evidence tying Dixie into this family, but I don't know where else she might belong.

It does not seem that William M. Grant and second wife Lucinda Jane Farr Millsaps had any children together.

William M. Grant and third wife Caroline Carringer had 4 children (per her 1900 and 1910 census entry), but only three are known: Walter Grant (1889), proven by his death certificate; Addie Grant (1889) who was with Caroline in 1900 and 1910; and Allen Grant (1900), who was with Caroline in 1900. Caroline's 1900 census entry showed her mother of 4 children, only 3 still living. I don't know who the other child is, but he was probably born after 1887, but died before 1900. Allen Grant was born well after the death of William Grant, so he may not be his son at all, but he is probably Caroline's for sure. Caroline's 1910 census entry shows her the mother of 4 children, only two of which were still living. Allen seems to be the one who died before 1910, for I was unable to locate him that year.

Cordelia Grant was born ca 1852. I have no direct evidence to support the inclusion of this child in the family. I believe that Beth McPherson gave me her name. I do not have the John Grant family on the 1860 census yet, but presumably she would be listed with the family that year. She was not home in 1870 unless she is the person listed as "Casadie Grant", age 18 (which fits age-wise, and the name is close), but this person in 1870 is listed as a male, and listed at the end of the other family members, suggesting he was not a child, but a nephew or other relative instead.

Nonetheless, I don't doubt that Cordelia belongs here, but I only wanted to point out that I had no direct evidence regarding her. She supposedly married a Mr. Jones, either in Tennessee or North Carolina. More research is needed to fill in all the blanks.

Mary Jane Grant was born 9 Sep 1855 (per tombstone) in Tennessee (per 1870 census) or North Carolina (per 1880 census). If born in Tennessee, then probably in Monroe County; if in North Carolina, then probably Cherokee County.

Mary Jane was probably home with her parents in 1860, though I haven't found them that year yet. She was home in 1870 ("Mary" age 11, born TN).

On 26 Mar 1879, Mary J. Grant married Joseph Edmund Stewart (E. A. Stuart on marriage record) in Cherokee County, North Carolina. Edmund was born 10 Nov 1848 (per tombstone) in Cherokee County, son of James Stewart and Harriett Katherine Scott.

They were listed on the 1880 census in Cherokee County in Valleytown Township.

I don't have them on the 1910 or 1920 census yet.

Joseph Edmund Stewart died on 10 Nov 1938 in Cherokee County, North Carolina.

John "Jack" Grant was born ca 1857/58 (per 1870 census) in Monroe County, Tennessee.

John was probably home with his parents in 1860, though I haven't found them that year yet. He was home in 1870 ("John" age 12, born TN), but not home in 1880.

I have no further record of him.

Sarah Evelyn Grant was born ca 1858/59 (per 1870 census) or 24 Apr 1860 (per Beth McPherson). She was probably born in Monroe County, Tennessee. I only have documentation for her name being "Sarah", but Beth shared her middle name with me.

Sarah was probably home with her parents in 1860, though I haven't found them that year yet. She was home in 1870 ("Sarah" age 11, born TN), and home in 1880 ("Sarah" age 19, born NC).

On 14 Mar 1882, Sarah Grant married James Rhodes (James Rodes) in Graham County. Their marriage record gave her age as 22 and his as 19, and that he was a resident of Union County, Georgia. They married at her father John Grant's house.

They apparently moved to Christian County, Missouri before 1900 (per Beth McPherson). I have not attempted to trace them there. Beth shared some data on their family, including birth and death dates, etc.

Aletha Melissa Grant was born February 1863 (per 1900 census) in Tennessee (per 1870 and 1900 census), or North Carolina (per 1880 census). If born in Tennessee, then probably Monroe County, if North Carolina, then presumably Graham County (or possibly Cherokee County).

She was with her parents in 1870 ("Malisa", age 8, born TN), and with them in 1880 ("Melissa", age 16, born NC).

I did not find a marriage record, but Melissa married William Harrison Dale sometime between 1880 and ca 1882, probably in Cherokee County, North Carolina, though possibly in Graham County.  Their marriage is proven by the birth certificates of several of their children, and supported by later census and other records. William was born 25 Dec 1857 (per tombstone) in North Carolina, perhaps Cherokee County. He is a son of John Henry Dale and Elizabeth Derreberry (per Dianne Fields).

William and Melissa were listed on the 1900 census in Cherokee County, North Carolina in Valleytown Township. They were probably in the Marble area.

I don't have them on the 1920 census yet.

Aletha Melissa Grant died in 1942, and William Harrison Dale on 13 Sep 1945. They are buried at the Moss Cemetery in Marble, Cherokee County, North Carolina.

Nancy Catherine "Kittie" Grant was born ca 1863/64 (per 1870 census) in Tennessee (per 1870 census), or North Carolina (per 1880 census). If born in Tennessee, then probably Monroe County, if North Carolina, then presumably Graham County (or possibly Cherokee County).

She was with her parents in 1870 ("Nancy", age 6, born TN), and with them in 1880 ("Catherine", age 14, born NC).

On 29 Dec 1881 Kittie Grant married David Blevins in Graham County. She was listed as age 18, and he as age 20. They married at her John Grants (her father). David was born ca 1860/61 (per his age on the marriage record). I have no data on his parents or birth place.

Apparently, David Blevins died between 1881 and 1888, for in that latter year, Kittie remarried.

On 23 Nov 1888, Kittie Blevins age 22, married Samuel Carringer, age 24 in Graham County. Samuel was born ca 1863/64 (per age on marriage record). I don't know who his parents were.

I don't know the source, but I've been told that Kittie died in 1892. Since I was unable to locate her on the 1900 census, this may be correct.

There was a Samuel Carringer on the 1900 census in Graham County, born July 1855, widowed. This may be the same Samuel, though his age is different from the one given in the marriage record. This Samuel in 1900 is obviously the same one who married Tennessee Farr in 1877. It is possible that Tennessee Farr Carringer died before 1888, and that Kittie Grant Blevins was Samuel's 2nd wife. It is also possible these are two different Samuel Carringers. This same Samuel (1855) married again later in 1900 to Martha Nichols.

Benjamin P. Grant was born 22 Sep 1867 (per tombstone) in Tennessee (per 1870 and 1900 census), or North Carolina (per 1880 census). If born in Tennessee, then probably Monroe County, if North Carolina, then presumably Graham County (or possibly Cherokee County). I have seen Benjamin's middle name listed as "Prayer", but I don't know what the source of that is.

Benjamin was home with his parents for the 1870 census ("Ben", age 4, born TN), and home in 1880 ("Beny" age 12, born NC).

Benjamin Grant witnessed several marriages in Graham County in the 1890's.

For the 1900 census, Benjamin Grant was living with the William and Nancy Carringer family in Graham County. He was not related to them as far as I know, though his brother William had married Caroline Carringer, perhaps a sister to William Carringer.  Ben was listed as a "Boarder", so that would confirm he was not closely related to this family. Interestingly, another Grant was there also as a boarder, Robert Grant, who was Benjamin's 3rd cousin. Robert Sylvester Grant (1875) was a son of Henry Burnett Grant (1836). They were from two different major branches of the William Grant family, so I wonder if Benjamin and Robert knew the exact nature of their relationship. I would imagine that they at least knew they were cousins, if not exactly how they were related.

Sometime in the 1900-1910 timeframe, Benjamin married Abbie Lee Barnett. I did not find a marriage record for them in either Graham nor Cherokee County, but they were married by 1910. Abbie was born 26 Jun 1879 (per tombstone) in Cherokee County, North Carolina, daughter of James M. Barnett and Louisa McGuire.

Benjamin and Abbie were listed on the 1910 census in Graham County, with Ben's widowed mother Evaline residing with them.

I do not have them on the 1920 census yet, but presumably they were in Graham or possibly Cherokee County.

Benjamin P. Grant died on 16 Nov 1960, and Abbie on 2 Mar 1968. They are buried at the Valleytown Cemetery in Andrews, Cherokee County, North Carolina.

Amanda Grant was born ca 1867/68 (per 1870 census) in Tennessee (per 1870 census), or North Carolina (per 1880 census). If born in Tennessee, then probably Monroe County, if North Carolina, then presumably Graham County (or possibly Cherokee County).

Amanda was home with her parents for the 1870 census ("Amanda", age 2, born TN) and home for the 1880 census ("Amanda", age 10, born NC).

On 12 Apr 1884, Amanda Grant married Hampton Barnes in Graham County, North Carolina. The marriage record gave her age as 15, and his as 20, listing both as Graham County residents. They married at her father John Grant's house. Hampton Barnes was born ca 1863/64 (per his age on the marriage record). I don't know who his parents are.

They were not in Graham County for the 1900 census. Beth McPherson told me this family moved to California at some point. They may have stopped off in some other state on the way. More research is needed.

Edgar Francis Grant was born ca 1872/73 (per 1880 census) or 22 Feb 1873 (per Beth McPherson). He was born in North Carolina, presumably Graham County (or possibly Cherokee County). He was home with his parents for the 1880 census ("Edgar", age 7, born NC).

According to Beth McPherson, Edgar moved to Christian County, Missouri. Since I did not find him in North Carolina in 1900, I assume he was in Missouri already by then.

Also according to Beth, he married Harriett Minerva Skaggs in Christian County, Missouri in 1901. All the data I have on them is thanks to Beth McPherson, a granddaughter of Edgar and Harriett.

Beth also shows that the family later moved to Milton, Wisconsin, where Edgar died on 19 Mar 1945, and Harriett in 1968.

Minnie Grant was born ca 1875/76 (per 1880 census) in North Carolina, presumably Graham County (or possibly Cherokee County). She was home with her parents for the 1880 census ("Minnie", age 4, born NC).

On 24 Dec 1893 she married Samuel McFalls in Graham County. Their marriage record listed him as age 25 "of Combry County, Pennsylvania", and her as age 18 of "Johnson, NC", and that they were married at "the brides mothers" home. Samuel was born ca 1867/68 (per his age on the marriage record). I don't know where he was born. That his place of residence was listed as Pennsylvania could mean he was born there as well. I don't know who his parents were.

Apparently, Minnie Grant McFalls died ca 1899, possibly in childbirth. I base this on the fact that she was not listed on the 1900 census, and that Samuel remarried in 1903, and that Minnie's apparent daughter Daisy McFalls (born Feb 1899) was living with Evaline Johnson Grant in 1900, listed as Daisy's grandmother. All this adds up to Minnie being dead by then.

Samuel McFalls was not in Graham County for the 1900 census. Perhaps he was back in Pennsylvania, but he did not remain there.

Samuel McFalls married Dixie Sherrill on 14 Jan 1903 in Graham County. Dixie is a relative of mine, born March 1884 in Graham County, daughter of Ute Sherrill and Mary C. Harrison.

I have not located Dixie McFalls on the 1910 or on any later records.
