I (Marty Grant) am a 1st cousin 5 times removed of Henry B. Grant.

I owe thanks to many people for sharing data on the more recent branches of this family (see the researcher list for their names), but I owe special thanks to Gene Brakebill, who shared a great deal of data with me. Thanks Gene!

Henry B. Grant was born in 1836 (per tombstone) in Macon Co, NC, presumably on or near Mill Creek (or "Millers Creek").

He is a son of Charles B. Grant and Mary Morris, and was with them on the 1850 census.

He was probably named for his uncle Henry Burnett.

Henry was apparently home with his parents in 1840 (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40) and was with them in 1850 ("Henry" age 14, born Macon).

On 6 Aug 1857 Henry Grant obtained a marriage bond in Macon Co, NC to marry Elizabeth Morrison. No bondsman was listed. They were married on 12 Aug 1857 in Macon Co, NC by M. J. Morgan, JP. Elizabeth C. Morrison was born 23 Oct 1835 (per tombstone) in Macon County, daughter of William Morrison and Susannah Queen.

Henry and Elizabeth were listed in Macon Co, NC on the 1860 census. They were in Tennessee Valley district.

For the Civil War, Henry Grant enlisted on 7 Jul 1862 in Company A, 7th Battalion, NC Cavalry as a Private. He gave his name as "Henry B. Grant", age 25 (born ca 1836/37) and a resident of Macon Co, NC. He served in that unit for over a year.

On 3 Aug 1863 Henry was transferred to Company E, 65th Regiment, NC Troops, still as a Private. He was listed "Absent without Leave" in Sep and Dec 1863. No further records were listed. He probably just came back home. I didn't see his name on any Union rosters, so he didn't go to the other side (as so many others from this area did). Or else there just isn't a record of it.

Elizabeth Morrison Grant's father William Morrison died in 1865, and on 27 Feb 1866 his heirs made a deed dividing some of his land. "H. B. Grant" and wife Elizabeth were included among several heirs selling their share to another heir. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book L page 356).

Henry and Elizabeth were still in Macon Co, NC for the 1870 census. They were listed in Cowee Township.

Henry and family moved to Graham Co, NC between 1880 and 1882 and settled in the Lower Yellow Creek area (north of Robbinsville, and a little south east of Fontana Village).

Henry B. Grant died in 1882 (per tombstone) and is buried at Lower Yellow Creek Cemetery in Graham Co, NC.

After Henry's death, the children were found mainly in Graham and Swain Counties.

Henry's widow, Elizabeth lived for many years after his death. I didn't find her listed on the 1900 census, but she was probably home with one of her children that I haven't located yet.

In 1910 Elizabeth was in Swain Co, NC residing with her daughter Henrietta Grant Shope, listed in Charleston Township.

Children

Henry B. Grant and Elizabeth Morrison Grant's children are mostly proven by the 1860, 1870 and 1880 (and later) census records. Be sure to check the Researcher page, as I have numerous researchers listed for this branch of the family, many of whom contributed data.

Virgil Ervin Grant (1858)

Varnal Moody Grant (1859)

Randall Vaney Grant (c1861)

Henrietta Paralee Grant (1863)

Vance Monroe Grant (c1865)

Marion Kimsey Grant (1868)

Artie Morrison Grant (1870)

Doctor Sydney Grant (1872)

Robert Sylvester Grant (1875)

Virgil Ervin Grant was born 22 May 1858 (per Gene Brakebill) in Macon Co, NC. He was home with his parents in 1860 ("Virgil E." age 2) and with them in 1870 ("Virgil I." age 12), and still home in 1880 ("Virgil E." age 22).

Many thanks are owed to Gene Brakebill for data shared on this branch of the family.

Virgil moved over to nearby Blount County, Tennessee between 1881 and 1884.

On 17 Mar 1884, Virgil E. Grant married Martha Ann Nelson in Blount County, Tennessee. Martha was born 21 Nov 1861 in Blount, daughter of James Leonard Nelson and Sarah Cuthbertson (all per Gene Brakebill).

I don't have them yet, but I believe they were listed on the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census in Blount County.

Virgil Ervin Grant died on 22 Jul 1930, and Martha on 22 Jan 1945. They are buried at the Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Blount County, Tennessee.

Varnal Moody Grant was born 28 Sep 1859 (per tombstone) in Macon Co, NC. He was home with his parents in 1860 ("Varnell M." age 10 months), and with them in 1870 ("Varnal M." age 10).

In 1880, Varnal was head of household in Macon County, next door to his parents. Two of his brothers were with him. The census taker didn't number the households, so I created my own family and house numbers to distinguish them.

On 7 Oct 1881, V. M. Grant, age 22 married S. E. Potts age 21 (Sarah Elizabeth Potts) in Macon County. They were married by J. S. Woodard, Minister of the Gospel. Sarah was born 19 Mar 1860 (per tombstone) in Macon County, daughter of William F. Potts and Amanda Elizabeth Morrison. They were probably cousins, since both of their mothers were Morrisons.

They moved to neighboring Swain County and remained there. They were listed on the 1900 census in Swain County in Charleston Township. They were just two houses from 2nd cousin William W. Grant (1876), son of Sarah Grant (1841) daughter of Thomas B. Grant (c1804).

Varnal Moody Grant died on 27 Apr 1950, and Sarah Elizabeth Potts Grant died on 10 Oct 1959. They are buried at the Bryson City Cemetery in Swain County.

Randall Vaney Grant was born ca 1860/61 (per 1870 census) in Macon Co, NC. He was home with his parents in 1870 ("Randell" age 9) and with his brother Varnal in 1880 ("Vaney R." age 19).

On 7 Jul 1881 V. D. Grant, age 20 married R. J. Rickman age 22 (Rhoda J. Rickman) in Macon County. They were married by J. S. Woodard, Minister of the Gospel. Rhoda was born ca 1859 in Macon County, daughter of William C. Rickman and Naomi Rickman.

Family tradition stated that they "went west". Recently I heard from researchers of this line, and "west" turned out to be Arkansas, and later Oklahoma where he died ca 1912.

Henrietta Paralee Grant was born 4 Feb 1863 (per tombstone) in Macon Co, NC. She was home with her parents for the 1870 census ("H. P." age 7), and in 1880 ("Henrietta K." age 17).

On 15 Apr 1894 Henryetta Grant, age 29 married T. V. Shope (Thomas Vance Shope), age 34. They were married by O. P. Williams (her brother-in-law) at Yellow Creek. Thomas Vance Shope was born January 1859 (per 1900 census) in North Carolina, perhaps Buncombe or Macon County (not sure though), son of Jacob Shope and Elizabeth Ann Shuler.

They were listed on the 1900 census in Swain County in Charleston Township. Thomas was listed as a Deputy U. S. Marshall.

They were still in Swain County for the 1910 census. This census showed them with an adopted child Gertrude Summerow, (who was still with Henrietta in 1920).

Thomas Vance Shope died between 1910 and 1920.

Sometime between 1918 and 1920, Henrietta Grant Shope married her widowed brother-in-law Oliver Perry Williams (had been married to her sister Artie M. Grant). They probably married in Swain County.

Henrietta and Oliver were listed on the 1920 census in Swain County. Her widowed mother Elizabeth was still with them, as was adopted daughter Gertrude Summerow.

Henrietta Paralee Grant Shope Williams died on 12 Oct 1924 in Swain County. Oliver Perry Williams died on 19 Feb 1935. They are buried at the Bryson City Cemetery in Swain County.

Vance Monroe Grant was born ca 1864/65 (per 1870 census) in Macon Co, NC. He was home with his parents in 1870 ("Vance M." age 5), and with his brother Varnal in 1880 ("Vance M." age 14).

According to family, he moved "west" in the early 1880's and settled in Arkansas. I don't have much data on him yet, other than that is where he went and that he died there ca 1905.

Marion Kimsey Grant was born 20 Mar 1868 (source?) in Macon Co, NC. Most records list him as "Marion K.", but several descendants insist his name was "Kimsey Marion Grant". I'll leave it the way that most of the records show, but keep in mind it may be reversed. He was home with his parents for the 1870 census ("Marion K." age 2) and with them in 1880 ("Marion K." age 12).

On 4 Dec 1887, Kinzey Grant, age 21 married Julia Shope (Julia Ann Shope), age 17, in Graham County, at Jacob Shope's. Julia was born 7 Nov 1870 (source?) in Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC, daughter of Jacob Shope and Elizabeth Ann Shuler.

They were listed on the 1900 census in Graham County, in Yellow Creek Township. They were next door to William Harvey Grant (1874), son of William M. Grant (1850), son of John Grant and Evaline Johnson. Harvey would have been Marion's 3rd cousin, once removed. I wonder if they knew how (or if) they were related.

On 12 Oct 1909, in Swain County, the heirs of Jacob Shope (including K. M. Grant and wife Julia Grant of Graham) sold their shares of his land to T. V. Shope (Thomas Vance Shope). (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 34, page 467).

Sometime in 1909, or early 1910, Marion and family moved to nearby Blount County, Tennessee.

** They were on the 1910 census in Blount County, but I don't have the listing yet.

Julia Shope Grant died on 31 Oct 1916 in Blount, and Marion died there 43 years later on 22 Apr 1960. They are both buried at the Magnolia Cemetery in Maryville, Blount County, Tennessee.

Artie Morrison Grant was born 2 May 1870 (per tombstone) in Macon Co, NC. She was home with her parents for the 1870 census ("Arta M." age 1 month, born May), and with them in 1880 ("Artie M." age 10).

On 29 Sep 1887, Artie Grant age 18 of Graham, married O. P. Williams (Oliver Perry Williams), age 28 of Monroe County, Tennessee. They married in Graham County at Yellow Creek. O. P. was born 24 Apr 1859 (per tombstone) in Monroe County, Tennessee. He might be the same Oliver who was a son of William Williams and Amanda Johnston. They were from Monroe Co, TN, but where in Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC by 1870.

** I have not yet found this family on the 1900 census, though I suspect they were in either Graham or Swain County, North Carolina.

They were on the 1910 census in Swain County in Charlestown Township. They were next to Artie's brother Varnal Grant, and just 4 houses from Artie's mother. Oliver was listed as Clerk of State Court.

Artie Morrison Grant died on 16 Apr 1918. I'm not sure what the source is, but I have that she died in Morganton, Burke County, North Carolina. She is buried at the Bryson City Cemetery in Swain County.

Oliver P. Williams married Artie's sister Henrietta after 1918. See her entry above for more on the Williams family after this point.

Doctor Sydney Grant was born 3 Sep 1872 (per tombstone) in Macon Co, NC. He was home with his parents for the 1880 census ("Doctor S." age 7).

On 1 Feb 1894, D. S. Grant, age 21, married Loocy Snyder (Lucy Alice Snyder), age 17 in Graham County, at the Bride's fathers'. Lucy was born 8 May 1877 (per tombstone) in Graham County, daughter of Alec Snyder and Martha Millsaps.

They were listed on the 1900 census in Graham County, in Yellow Creek Township.

They were in neighboring Swain County for the 1910 census, and in Charleston Township, but for some reason, Doctor S. Grant wasn't home with his wife and children. He was either away (perhaps out of state), or the census taker just forgot to list him for some reason. Lucy was listed as Head of household, and married.

Doctor Sydney Grant died in Swain County on 22 Jul 1931. Lucy died 31 years later on 27 Aug 1962. They are both buried at the Bryson City Cemetery in Swain County, North Carolina.

Robert Sylvester Grant was born 14 Oct 1875. His tombstone gives this month and day, but 1872 for the year, but I believe that is in error. The 1880 census gives his age as 5 (born ca 1874/75), and the 1900 census gives his birth as "Aug" 1875, which works with the 1880 entry. So based on this, and that his older brother was born in 1872, I've "adjusted" his birth year to be 1875, which I think is accurate. He was born in Macon County, North Carolina.

He was home with his parents for the 1880 census ("Robert S." age 5).

Robert witnessed the marriage of his brother Doctor S. Grant on 1 Feb 1894 in Graham County.

On 28 Nov 1898, Robert witnessed the marriage of F. M. Carringer and Amanda Davis in Graham County.

For the 1900 census, Robert Grant was living with the William and Nancy Carringer family in Graham County. He was not related to them as far as I know. He was listed as a "Boarder", so that would confirm he was not closely related to this family. Interestingly, another Grant was there also as a boarder, Benjamin Grant, who was Robert's 3rd cousin. Benjamin P. Grant was a son of John Grant and Evaline Johnson. They were from two different major branches of the William Grant family, so I wonder if Benjamin and Robert knew the exact nature of their relationship. I would imagine that they at least knew they were cousins, if not exactly how they were related.

They were in neighboring Swain County for the 1910 census, in Forney Creek township.

Robert had the misfortune of dying on his birth day. He died on 14 Oct 1918, either in Swain County, or Graham County. He is buried in Graham County.

I don't yet have Josephine on the 1920 census.

Josephine Williams Grant died on 3 May 1964 (per death record and tombstone) in Graham County.
