I (Marty Grant) am a 2nd cousin 5 times removed to John Alexander Grant.
John Alexander Grant was born ca 1813/14 presumably in the Cove Creek area in (then) Rutherford Co, NC, (now around the around the McDowell / Rutherford border).
He is a proven son of William Grant and Sarah Elms of Rutherford and McDowell Co, NC. He is named in William's will (1853) and Sarah's will (1870).
John was apparently home with his parents for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and apparently home in 1830 (age 15-19, born ca 1810/15), and apparently still home in 1840 (age 20-29, born ca 1810/20).
John A. Grant obtained a marriage bond in Rutherford Co, NC on 13 Sep 1841 to marry Minty M. Bruce. John Gibbs was the bondsman. Minty (or "Mintey") was born March 1820 (per 1900 census), presumably in Rutherford County. I don't know who Minty's parents were. Their oldest son was named "Samuel Bruce Grant", so that may be a clue.
On 21 Feb 1842, John A. Grant was the bondsman for the marriage of Aaron Bright and Mary Grant (John's sister).
In 1850 John's parents, and most of John's siblings were living in McDowell Co, NC. John wasn't far from them, but was in Rutherford County, listed in Montford Cove District. This was the area now known as Whitehouse, in Morgan Township. This community is on the McDowell County line, over which is called Montford Cove Township.

John was named in the will of his father William Grant dated 14 Oct 1853 in McDowell as his son "John A.".
By 1860, John and family were still in Rutherford Co, NC but were listed in Buffalo District, with a Post Office of Chimney Rock. This is the area near Lake Lure in modern Chimney Rock Township.

John Grant died before 21 Dec 1887 in Rutherford Co, NC for that was the earliest date found in his estate papers (Rutherford County Loose Estates at the North Carolina Archives).
Minty was listed in Chimney Rock on the 1900 census.

Minty Bruce Grant made her Will on 11 Jan 1904 in Rutherford Co, NC, which was proven on 2 Apr 1906, meaning she died sometime between those two dates.
There are probably more records in Rutherford County pertaining to John A. Grant and family. I'll get to them when I can.

Samuel Bruce Grant was born 3 Aug 1842 (per tombstone) in Rutherford Co, NC probably the Montford Cove area. He was with his parents in 1850 ("Samuel" age 8) and with them still in 1860 ("Samuel" age 17).
He served in the Civil War (Confederate) in the 29th NC Regiment, Company B.
He married Harriett Nanney on 13 Aug 1866 in McDowell Co, NC. Harriett was born 24 Apr 1845 (per tombstone), daughter of Jonathan and Esther (---) Nanney.

Samuel (listed as "S. B." in many records) was named in his father's estate papers (1887) as the oldest son of John A. Grant.
They were still in Chimney Rock Township for the 1900 census next door to his widowed mother.

He was named in his mother's Will (1904) as her oldest son.
I don't have them in 1910 or 1920 census yet.
Samuel died 23 Sep 1920 in Rutherford Co, NC and is buried at Stone Mountain Missionary. His estate papers (dated 4 Nov 1920, 10 Oct 1921) name his heirs.
Rhoda C. Grant was born ca 1843/44 in Rutherford Co, NC probably in the Montford Cove area. She was at home with her parents in 1850 ("Rhoda" age 6), and in 1860 ("Rody" age 16).
She married W. P. Moffitt on 11 Mar 1866 in Rutherford Co, NC. W. Patton Moffitt was born ca 1831/32, probably in Burke (now McDowell) County. I don't know who his parents are. Apparently, he had been married prior to his marriage to Rhoda.
Patton and Rhoda were listed on the 1870 census in neighboring McDowell County, just a few houses from her brother Samuel Bruce Grant.

They were I found no further record of them. I did not find them on the 1880 census, at least not in McDowell or Rutherford County, North Carolina.
She wasn't mentioned in her father's estate (1887), nor her mother's will (1904), so she must have died shortly after 1870.
William Bailey Grant was born 15 Aug 1846 in Rutherford Co, NC probably in the Montford Cove area. (Thanks to Ken Bradford for the dates on William B. Grant and wife).
William was at home with his parents in 1850 ("William" age 4) and with them in 1860 ("William" age 14).
He married ca 1869 in McDowell Co, NC to Margaret Ann Bird (thanks to Ken Bradford for her maiden name). Margaret was born 9 Sep 1846 (per Ken) in McDowell County, daughter of Benjamin Bird and Clarissa Minerva Conley (also per Ken).
They were listed on the 1870 McDowell Co, NC census, in Old Fort Township.

According to Ken, William and Margaret later divorced.
A "W. B. Grant" married "Bonney B. Smith" on 30 Nov 1897 in Buncombe Co, NC. I don't know if this is the same William. His age on this marriage record was "34", which puts his birth at ca 1862/63, which isn't even close.
William appeared on the 1900 census in Buncombe Co, NC with a wife "Nora", the census listed them married 3 years (c1896/97). These may be the same people as William and "Bonnie".

W. B. Grant was named in his mother's Will (1904) as her son.
I have not yet looked for William on the 1910 census, but he was probably still in Asheville.
He died 22 Dec 1914 in Asheville, Buncombe Co, NC, per Ken Bradford.
Joseph Grant was born ca 1848/49 in Rutherford Co, NC probably in the Montford Cove area. He was at home with his parents in 1850 ("Joseph" age 1) and 1860 ("Joseph" age 10). It seems likely that he was a twin to Mary J. Grant, as they were reported as the same age in both 1850 and 1860.
I found no record of him after 1860. He was only 10 then, so not old enough to serve during the Civil War. He wasn't named in either his father's estate papers (1887) nor his mother's will (1904).
Mary J. Grant was born ca 1848/49 in Rutherford Co, NC probably in the Montford Cove area. She was at home with her parents in 1850 ("Mary J. age 1) and in 1860 ("Mary" age 10) and still home in 1870 ("Mary J." age 21). Mary was likely a twin to Joseph Grant, as they were both the exact same age in 1850 and 1860.
Mary Grant married Jonathan C. Elliott on 12 Aug 1872 in Rutherford Co, NC. The marriage record gave her age as 24 (born ca 1847/48) and his as 26 (born ca 1845/46). I don't know who Jonathan's parents were.
They were listed on the 1880 census in Green Hill Township.

Mary was named in her mother's Will (1904) as her "daughter Mary J. Elliott".
James Lafayette Grant was born ca 1851/52 in Rutherford Co, NC probably in the Montford Cove area. He was at home with his parents in 1860 ("Lafayette" age 8) and in 1870 ("James D." age 18). In 1860 he was "Lafayette", age 8, but in 1870 he was "James D.", age 18. The ages match, but not the name. However it seems likely they are the same person.
The 1870 census was the last record for him. He wasn't named in either his father's estate papers (1887) nor his mother's will (1904).
Sarah M. Grant was born ca 1853/54 in Rutherford Co, NC probably in the Montford Cove area or perhaps the Chimney Rock area.
She was at home with her parents in 1860 ("Sarah M." age 6) and in 1870 ("Sarah" age 16).
She married W. P. Elliott on 14 Mar 1878 in Rutherford Co, NC. Their marriage record showed her as "Sallie Grant", age 22, and him as age 23. They were married by A. L. Rucker, Justice of the Peace. W. P. (don't know what his initials stood for) was born ca 1855/56. I don't know who his parents were. There is a possibility that W. P. is the same person as William P. Elliott, son of James Lawson Elliott and Caroline Grant. If true, then Sarah and husband were 1st cousins. I'm assuming that "W. P." is the same person as William P. Elliott, but there is a possibility that I'm wrong.

Margaret M. Grant was born ca 1857/58 in Rutherford Co, NC probably in the Chimney Rock area. She was at home with her parents in 1860 ("Margaret" age 2) and in 1870 ("Margarett" 14).
She married W. B. Melton on 4 Feb 1877 in Rutherford Co, NC. Their marriage record gave her as "Maggie Grant" age 18, and his age as 24. They were married by W. H. Logan, Baptist Minister.
They were listed on the 1880 census in Rutherford Co, NC in Chimney Rock Township just two houses from her parents.
