John Grant and Margaret Sale of Wilkes and Iredell Co, NC

I (Marty Grant) am not related to the John Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in his family though.

John Grant was born ca 1755/1756 (per the 1835 Pensioners census) or ca 1759/60 (per the 1840 Pensioners census). He first appeared in Surry Co, NC records beginning in 1780. He apparently owned land on Hunting Creek (in modern Yadkin County). He was in various Surry County records throughout the 1780's. He also was in Wilkes County records at the same time. The North Fork of Hunting Creek rises in eastern Wilkes County and flows eastward into Yadkin County (formed 1850 from Surry). He may have lived in the border area between Surry and Wilkes. I have only done a small amount of research on him in these two counties, so there may be much more to be found.

I have no idea where John Grant came from. In the book The Heritage of Wilkes County, 1982, Mrs. W.O. Absher, Editor, Article # 605 "John Grant" by Mae R. Hayes states that John was born in Somersetshire, England. I have seen no proof of this. Since he was a Pensioner, perhaps that data is in his pension file (which I haven't seen yet). There was a David Grant in Wilkes Co, NC in the 1790 census. He wasn't anywhere near John as far as I can tell, but he could easily be his brother. No proof though.

John Grant obtained a marriage bond on 13 Apr 1784 in Wilkes Co, NC to marry Margaret Sail. William Allen was the bondsman. Margaret was born ca 1755/65, daughter of William Sale and Ann (---).

John Grant was listed on the 1787 census in Wilkes Co, NC. He was listed in Captain Gordon's district. John Grant's neighbors to either side were Hance Lackins and Bazel Baker.

John Grant was also listed on the 1790 census in Wilkes County, NC. He was in the 11th Company, and his neighbors to either side were Ben Kerby and Hanel Lycan (probably the same as "Hance Lackins" from 1787). Leonard, Thom, Cornelius and Nancy Sale were listed next to Ben Kerby. These are probably Margaret Sale Grant's family members. Nancy Sale is probably the widow of William Sale, Margaret's father. "Nancy" and "Ann" are interchangeable as nicknames one for the other.

John Grant was still in Wilkes on the 1800 census. This census was alphabetized, so I couldn't tell who his neighbors were.

Both of John Grant's daughters married in the 1800-1810 timeframe. Elizabeth Grant married Moses Mitchell on or about 3 Aug 1801 in Wilkes Co, NC. James Jarvis was the bondsman. Anna Grant married John Howard on or about 11 Apr 1806 in Wilkes Co, NC. John Chambers was the bondsman.

John Grant was still in Wilkes Co, NC for the 1810 census. I didn't note who his direct neighbors were, but his mother-in-law Ann Sale was listed one page away.

Between 1810 and 1820 John Grant and family had moved to neighboring Iredell Co, NC. He may have lived in the section that is still Iredell, or he might have lived in the section that later became Alexander County (in 1847). More research is needed to determine where he lived exactly. Their son Robert Grant married in the 1810-1820 timeframe.

They were still in Iredell Co, NC for the 1830 census. A young girl (age 15-19) was with the family in 1830. She is probably a grandchild, or perhaps a housekeeper. Their son Robert Grant was listed near them in 1830.

John Grant was listed on the 1835 Revolutionary War Pensioners list for Iredell Co, NC. He was listed as a former Private, aged 79 (born ca 1755/56) and had served in the NC Continental Line.

John Grant made his Will on 11 Jul 1835 in Iredell Co, NC. (Iredell Co, NC Will Book 2 page 289) He named his wife Margaret, his daughter Elizabeth Mitchell, his daughter Anna Howard, and his son Robert Grant. The Will wasn't proven until January 1844, nearly 9 years after he wrote it.

John Grant was listed on the 1840 census in Iredell Co, NC. Although his wife Margaret was still living when he wrote his Will in 1835, she was apparently deceased by 1840, as no one her age was listed with him. An older male was with him, who was a perfect match for his son Robert (who wasn't found anywhere else), so I believe it is Robert living with John, and some of Robert's children were with him also, apparently. John Grant was also enumerated as a Revolutionary War Pensioner on the 1840 census. His entry listed him as age 80 (born ca 1759/60).

John Grant probably died ca December 1843 or January 1844 since his Will was proven in court January 1844.

Children

John Grant and Margaret Sale Grant's three children are proven by his Will (1835). Even before I found the Will, I was sure these three were his kids because he was the only candidate in the area.

Elizabeth Grant was born ca 1784/85 (per 1850 census) in North Carolina, (presumably Wilkes County). She was apparently home with her parents for the 1787 and 1790 census, though neither census gave ages for the females, but both times, John Grant had 3 females, presumably his wife Margaret, and daughters Elizabeth and Anna.

On 3 Aug 1801, Moses Mitchell obtained a marriage bond in Wilkes County to marry Elizabeth Grant. James Jarvis was the bondsman. Moses was born ca 1776/77 (per 1850 census), in North Carolina, perhaps Wilkes County. I don't know who his parents are, but I can't help but wonder if he is related to the elder Moses Mitchell who married Mary Grant (1753, daughter of William Grant and Elizabeth Boone) before 1771 nearby in Rowan (later Surry) County.

They were still in Iredell for the 1820 census and listed near Elizabeth's father John Grant and her brother-in-law John Howard. There were several "extra" people with them this year. I don't know who they all were.

They were still in Iredell for the 1830 census. This particular record seems to have the ages wrong for Moses and Elizabeth, but the rest of the household members seem more or less correct.

I found an article in one of the Heritage books that listed the children for this family. I don't have an exact reference. I'll find it and post it here as soon as I can to give the author proper credit.

Anna Grant was born ca 1784/87 (per census analysis) in North Carolina, (presumably Wilkes County). She was apparently home with her parents for the 1787 and 1790 census, though neither census gave ages for the females, but both times, John Grant had 3 females, presumably his wife Margaret, and daughters Elizabeth and Anna.

On 11 Apr 1806, John Howard obtained a marriage bond in Wilkes County to marry Anna Grant. John Chambers was bondsman. John Howard was born ca 1780/84, presumably in Wilkes County. I don't know who his parents were.

The 1810 census shows two John Howards in Wilkes County, one listed as "Jr", which is probably this one. That does not automatically mean that the other one was his father, as "Sr" and "Jr" were used back then only to show which was older when two men had the same name, but of course they could be father and son.

They moved over into neighboring Iredell County before 1820 where the rest of Anna's family had previously gone.

Robert Grant was born ca 1787/90 in Wilkes Co, NC. I didn't find a marriage record for Robert, but according to the Wilkes County, NC Heritage Book article (mentioned above) he married Jane F. Gibbs. According to the same article, she was born 15 July 1797. This article also gave the birthdates of the children. The author of the article (Mae R. Hayes) stated that the dates were recorded in family papers. In any event, they married ca 1810/1815. Robert was listed on the 1820 census in Burke Co, NC (in the region that later became Alexander County in 1847). The article lists the children's names and their birth dates and who some of them married.
