I (Marty Grant) am not related to Robert Grant as far as I know.
Robert Grant was born ca 1787/90 in Wilkes Co, NC. He is a proven son of John Grant and Margaret Sail, and was named in John's Will.
John Grant had no male child with him for the 1787 census, so it appears that Robert was born shortly after that census. Robert was apparently home with his parents for the 1790, 1800 and 1810 census.
According to an Article written by Mae R. Hayes, Robert Grant left NC around 1814 and moved to KY, but moved back to NC by 1819. I don't know where he went to in KY, but these dates conflict with the birth dates and places of Robert's children, several of whom were born during that time frame, all listed as born in NC per one or more census records.
I didn't find a marriage record for Robert in NC, but according to the Wilkes County, NC Heritage Book article (mentioned above) he married Jane F. Gibbs. According to the same article, she was born 15 July 1797. This article also gave the birthdates of the children. The author of the article (Mae R. Hayes) stated that the dates were recorded in family papers. In any event, they married ca 1810/1815. Robert was listed on the 1820 census in Burke Co, NC (in the region that later became Alexander County in 1847). The article lists the children's names and their birth dates and who some of them married.
I do not know the name of Jane's parents, but the 1810 census shows several Gibbs families in Burke County (Cornelius, Hugh, James, John, and William Gibbs), and one in Iredell County (John Gibbs). One of these men could be her father, assuming any of them lived in the part of Burke or Iredell that later became Alexander County.
Robert Grant was listed on the 1820 census in Burke County, NC, presumably in the section that later became Alexander County.

For some reason, Robert and Jane separated from each other, they may have divorced. I haven't checked for such a record, but after the 1820 census they were no longer together. Their last child was born in late 1825. In 1830 Robert was in Iredell (in the part that became Alexander in 1847) with some of the children, and Jane was in Burke (in the part that became Alexander in 1847). Even though they were in two different counties, they weren't that far from each other, but most certainly in separate households. Perhaps there is a divorce record on file at the NC Archives, probably for the 1825-1835 timeframe.

By the 1840 census, they were probably still apart. I didn't find Jane listed anywhere. Robert wasn't listed either, at least not as a head of household. Someone his age was with his father John Grant in 1840, and that is probably him.
In 1847, Alexander County was created as a new county from the eastern part of Burke and the western part of Iredell. The Robert Grant family, or part of it, fell into this new county.
I didn't find Robert on the 1850 census (nor afterwards), so it is probably safe to assume that he died in the 1840's, possibly in Iredell (now Alexander) County.
In 1850, Jane and most of their eight children were found spread over three counties: Jane was in Alexander, John in Surry, William in Iredell, James in Surry, Elizabeth in Alexander, and Robert M. in Alexander.

The 9 year old child, Mary, was a daughter of Elizabeth F. "Betty" Grant. By 1860 Jane was still in Alexander, though her son Robert had married and moved back to Iredell Co, NC.

Jane Grant was still living in 1870, and listed in Alexander Co, NC in Ellendale Township. Her daughter Elizabeth was no longer with her.

Jane was still in Alexander for the 1880 census, living by herself. She was listed as "Jane T. Grant", age 88, widowed, born North Carolina, her father born Virginia, and her mother born Ireland. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Jane died sometime after 1880, presumably in Alexander County.
Robert and Jane had eight children, only two of which I have proof for. All eight are named, and their birth dates given in the Article by Mae R. Hayes that I mentioned above. Her sources were "Family papers", I believe. I've not been in contact with Ms. Hayes, so I know nothing further of her sources.

John E. Grant was born 21 Apr 1815 in Burke Co, NC (now Alexander Co, NC). He married Catherine --- ca 1847 in Surry Co, NC. See his own page for additional information.
William B. Grant was born 7 Aug 1817 in Burke Co, NC (now Alexander Co, NC). He was a twin to James Sylvester Grant. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and still apparently home with his father 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20).
I don't know where William was in 1840. He may have been with his mother, though I did not find her listed that year. His father was not listed either in 1840, but I believe Robert was with his father John in Iredell. John did have an apparent male age 20-29 with him (born ca 1810/20), and this could very easily be William, though it could be one of his brothers instead.
William B. Grant married Amanda F. --- sometime before 1850 in Iredell Co, NC. Amanda was born ca 1828/29, possibly in Iredell County. I don't know her maiden name.
They were listed on the 1850 census in Iredell in the Town of Statesville. William was listed as "Town Keeper", and he had a number of people living with him, but no children.

I was unable to locate William and Amanda on the 1860 census in North Carolina. They probably moved away, or perhaps died.
James Sylvester Grant was born 7 Aug 1817 in Burke Co, NC (now Alexander Co, NC). He married a widow, Jane Branson Evans on 30 Jan 1844 in Cumberland Co, NC. See his own page for additional information.
Elizabeth F. Grant was born 13 Sep 1818 in Burke Co, NC (now Alexander Co, NC). As far as I can tell she never married, but had at least two children out of wedlock. In 1850 Elizabeth was residing with her mother in Alexander Co, NC, and already had one child by that time.

In 1860 Elizabeth was listed as head of household, and her widowed mother was residing with her. This time her surname was listed as "King", and she had one new child born ca 1853. It is possible that she married a Mr. King after 1850.

Margaret Grant was born 18 Jan 1820 in Burke Co, NC (now Alexander Co, NC). She married William Gilbert Templeton on 16 Aug 1838 in Iredell Co, NC.
I haven't searched for their 1840 census entry yet, but I did find them on the 1850 census in Iredell Co, NC listed just a couple of houses from her sister Ann Howard Grant. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Ann Howard Grant was born 5 Feb 1822 in Burke Co, NC (now Alexander Co, NC). She married Joseph Washington Hayes on 23 Jan 1845 in Iredell Co, NC.
They were listed on the 1850 census in Iredell Co, NC listed just a couple of houses from her sister Margaret Grant. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Isaac X. Grant was born 27 May 1824 in Burke Co, NC (now Alexander Co, NC). I have no record of Isaac other than from Ms. Hayes Article stating his name and birthdate. The 1830 census record for Robert Grant seems to show a son this age residing with him, but I have nothing on him after that. It is quite possible that he died young, or moved away from NC prior to 1850.
Robert McDuffy Grant was born 28 Dec 1825 in Burke Co, NC (now Alexander Co, NC). He was home with his mother for the 1850 census in Alexander Co, NC.
Robert married Eliza M. Scroggs ca 1852 in either Alexander or Iredell Co, NC. They were listed on the 1860 census in Iredell Co, NC.
