I (Marty Grant) am not related to Michael Grant as far as I know.

Michael Grant was born ca 1799/1800 (per 1850 census) in North Carolina, probably in Wayne County where his father was living at that time.

Michael Grant is a proven son of the elder Michael Grant (c1750) of Wayne County, as named in a deed from Michael to his son Michael dated 1811. I have not yet identified Michael's mother.

Michael's father (Michael Sr) did not seem to have any children with him for the 1800 census, so Michael Jr probably wasn't born yet.

For the 1810 census, Michael Jr would have been 9 or 10 years old. Michael Sr did have an apparent son aged "under 10" (born ca 1800/10) with him that year, and it is probably Michael Jr.

On 22 May 1811, Michael Grant (Sr) deeded to his son Michael Grant and daughter Polly Grant some property (livestock, etc.). Witnesses were Henry Hobson (my ancestor), Charles Lawhorn, Thad McDaniel and Thomas Grant (probably Michael Sr's nephew). (Wayne Co, NC Deed Book 9 page 370).

Michael Grant Jr's father Michael Grant Sr died ca 1818. In his estate record, Michael Grant, minor orphan was named when Joseph Burton was made his guardian. (Wayne Co, NC Loose Estates, NC Archives - Michael Grant -1818)

For the 1820 census, Michael Grant would have been about 19 years old. He was not listed as a head of household on that census. He may have been living with some other relatives, or perhaps with Joseph Burton, his legal guardian (though often, orphans did not live with their guardians).

Sometime before ca 1825, Michael Grant married Sarah "Sally" ---. I don't know what county they married in, but they were living in Greene County by 1830, so perhaps there (the early marriage records are lost for that county). Sarah was born ca 1799/1800 in North Carolina. I don't know her maiden name.

For the 1830 census, Michael Grant was listed in Greene County. His half-brother Lewis Grant (c1775) was there also, but they weren't listed near each other. Lewis and family lived in the Hookerton region. I'm not sure where Michael was living exactly. Michael's neighbors were Samuel Whitley and Willis Murphy. I don't know enough about Greene County (even though I live eight miles from Greene County!) to be able to narrow down where this was exactly or approximately.

By 1840, Michael and family had moved into neighboring Lenoir County (where I live) and were listed there on that census. His neighbors were Joshua Suggs and Isham Watson. Many of his other neighbors had the same surnames as his neighbors of 1830 Greene County, so perhaps he was still very close to the Greene County border. I can't narrow down where he was living though, but it would seem to be in the border region of Lenoir-Greene along Contentnea Creek somewhere. The enumerations of several of his apparent daughters doesn't match up with his previous and later entries.

They were still in Lenoir for the 1850 census. No townships were listed. He was next door to an apparent widow Wealthy Sparrow and the Jackson Garvey family on the other side. No Grants were nearby.

I was unable to locate Michael and Sally for the 1860 census. They were not in North Carolina. They either died in the 1850's, or left the state (or were just missed on the 1860 census). I did find their daughter Mary and her children still in Lenoir County in 1860, so perhaps that shows her parents had died. They wouldn't likely leave an unmarried (single mother) daughter behind by moving away.

Children

Michael and Sarah had several children per the 1830, 1840 and 1850 census. A few are unidentified.

Mary Grant (c1825)

Patience Grant (c1827)

Unknown Daughter (1835/40) * With parents in 1840, gone by 1850

Mary Grant was born ca 1824/25 (per 1850 census), presumably in Greene Co, NC. She came to Lenoir County with her parents while still young. She seems to have been home with them for the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and with them in 1840 (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35).

Mary seems to have started having children out of wedlock around 1847. She had at least two children. I don't know who the father might have been.

She was home with her parents in 1850 ("Mary" age 25), as was her son John Franklin Grant ("John F." age 2).

In 1860, she was still in Lenoir County, living with the Wilson Tilman family, relationship unknown.

I did not find Mary nor her children on the 1870 census. However, both of her sons were in Lenoir County in Contentnea Neck township on the 1880 census with families of their own.

Patience Grant was born ca 1826/27 (per 1850 census), presumably in Greene Co, NC. She came to Lenoir County with her parents while still young. She seems to have been home with them for the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and with them in 1840 perhaps (though her age is way off at "under 5", born ca 1835/40).

She was with her parents in 1850 ("Patience" age 23).

I have no data on her after 1850.
