I (Marty Grant) am a 2nd cousin 5 times removed to Morris Grant.
Morris Grant was born ca 1815/20 (per census analysis). The 1840 census entry is his only sure entry. He was age 20-29, or born ca 1810/20. Analysis of his parents household entries for 1820 and 1830 show he was probably born ca 1815/20.
He was presumably born in the Cove Creek area in (then) Rutherford Co, NC, (now around the around the McDowell / Rutherford border).
He is a proven son of William Grant and Sarah Elms of Rutherford and McDowell Co, NC. He is named in William's will (1853).
Morris was apparently home with his parents in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and apparently home with them in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20).
Morris Grant obtained a marriage bond in Rutherford Co, NC on 23 Dec 1837 to marry Almira M. Morrow. Almira was born ca 1810/20 (per 1840 census). I don't know who her parents were.
Morris Grant was listed on the 1840 census near his father in Rutherford Co, NC (in the area that soon became McDowell County).
1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

McDowell County was formed in 1842 from sections of Burke and Rutherford, including where the Morris Grant family lived.
Morris Grant died around 1844 in McDowell Co, NC. Estate records show up in 1844, and they show William Grant as an orphan of Morris.
The Estate records for Morris Grant do not mention Almira, so I'm not sure if she was also dead by 1844. I did not find any marriage records for her in the 1840's, nor did she appear on the 1850 census, at least not with the Grant surname.
The Estate records for Morris Grant (1844 McDowell Co, NC) seem to indicate he only had one child, and this agrees with the 1840 census record.
William E. Grant was born ca 1839/40 in Rutherford Co, NC, presumably in the area that later became McDowell Co, NC. I don't know what his middle initial stood for.
William seemed to be home with his parents in 1840 (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40).
In 1850 William E. Grant was living with his grandparents William and Sarah Grant in McDowell County. He was listed as age 10.
I've never been able to locate William E. Grant on the 1860 census, though he should be in the McDowell or Rutherford County area.
On 30 Dec 1860, William E. Grant obtained a marriage bond in Rutherford County to marry Sarah L. Amanda Noblett. M. C. Noblett was the bondsman (perhaps her father or brother). They were married the same day by M. Wilkerson, Justice of the Peace.
I have no data on Sarah. I don't have her birth date, nor her parents names. The one clue is "M. C. Noblett" who was bondsman for her marriage. He could be her father or a brother. I attempted to locate Sarah L. Amanda Noblett on the 1850 census in order to determine her parents, but I found no one that might be her in either Rutherford or McDowell County. A thorough search of the Nobletts in 1860 McDowell County did not reveal her either.
William E. Grant died at Camp Douglas, IL in the Civil War. I haven't found the Civil War records for him yet.
His estate in Rutherford Co, NC was dated Sep 1864. His wife Sarah A. Grant was appointed administrator.
I found no other records on Sarah Amanda Noblett Grant after the 1864 Estate record of her husband. She probably remarried or died prior to 1870. I don't know if William and Sarah had any children.
