I (Marty Grant) am not related to Moses Grant as far as I know.

Moses Grant was born ca 1790/1800, though in what state I can't say. I would guess it was either in North Carolina or Virginia.

I don't know who Moses Grant's parents might have been. I have no clues at all.

Moses would presumably have been home with his parents for the 1800 and 1810 census, but both of these years were lost for Tennessee, and for Virginia (though 1810 exists for about half the counties in Virginia). The 1800 and 1810 North Carolina census records are extant, but I have no idea which Grant family Moses might have belonged to, if any in that state. There were a bunch of them.

Moses Grant married Margaret --- ca 1815/20 in Tennessee, perhaps in White County, but I'm not sure if it was White County or somewhere else. I have no clues as to Margaret's maiden name. There was a marriage record for a Moses Grant and Obedience Moore in 1813 in Montgomery County, TN (well west of White County). It does not seem likely that they are one and the same couple, but it was worth mentioning.

I did not find Moses Grant on the 1820 census. If he was in White County, then he was not listed on the index that I have. The 1820 census is lost for all of Eastern Tennessee, so if he was in that part of TN, then the records are lost.

Moses Grant was listed on the 1830 census in White County, TN. His was the only Grant family there.

Moses Grant was still in White County for the 1840 census. Once again, his was the only Grant family listed there.

Moses Grant apparently died in the 1840/50 timeframe in White County, TN. In 1850, his apparent widow Margaret was listed with the John Madewell and Judy Madewell family. Presumably, Judy was her daughter.

I'm assuming that Margaret was Moses' widow. If not, then I don't know where she came from. However, I am reasonably sure that she was Moses' widow. As mentioned, Margaret was with her apparent daughter Judy, and she was just two houses from a probable son William Grant (c1827). Next door to Margaret (between her and son William) was the Charles Hunter family, which contained (among several other people) a 3 month old Judy Grant. I don't know how, but she must be related to Margaret, perhaps a granddaughter.

In 1854, Putnam County was created from the northern part of White County, apparently including the area where the Grant family resided.

Margaret Grant, age 78 (c1781/82) was listed on the 1860 index in Putnam Co, TN on the same page as her son William Grant. I don't have the listings yet.

Margaret Grant, age 91 (c1778/79) was listed on the 1870 index in Putnam Co, TN one page away from her son William Grant. I don't have the listings yet.

I have no data on Margaret beyond this point.

Children

Moses Grant and Margaret --- had several children per the 1830 through 1850 census.

Unknown Daughter (1815/20)

Judy Grant (c1825)

Unknown Daughter (1825/30)

Unknown Son (1825/30)

James A. Grant (c1833)

Unknown Daughter (1835/40)

Unknown Daughter (1815/20). Moses Grant had an apparent daughter this age with him in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20). Since I don't have him in 1820, I don't know if she was with him back then. This daughter was no longer with Moses in 1840, so she probably had married or died in the 1830/40 timeframe.

This could be Malinda Hunter (c1814/15) who was listed next door to widow Margaret Grant in 1850. Besides her age being a good match, she had a 3 month old Judy Grant residing with her. Malinda was apparently the wife of Charles Hunter. I don't know if Malinda was a Grant, or not. She might even be Charles' sister, instead of wife. Here is the listing just in case.

Judy Grant was born ca 1824/25 in White (now Putnam) Co, TN. She was apparently home with her parents for the 1830 census, age 5-9 (born ca 1820/25), and with them in 1840, age 15-19 (born ca 1820/25).

She married John Madewell ca 1840 in White (now Putnam) Co, TN.

John and Judy were listed on the 1850 census in White Co, TN with her widowed mother Margaret residing with them, and her brother James A. Grant.

I have no data on them beyond this point.

Unknown Daughter (1825/30). Moses Grant had an apparent daughter this age with him in 1830 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), but she was gone by 1840, so had married or died by then.

Unknown Son (1825/30). Moses Grant had an apparent son this age with him in 1830 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and with him in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30). He was not with widow Margaret Grant in 1850.

I feel sure that this is William Grant (c1827) who was just two houses from widow Margaret Grant in 1850. See his own page for more information.

James A. Grant was born ca 1832/33 in White (now Putnam) Co, TN. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35), and with his widowed mother in 1850.

I didn't find James on the 1860 or 1870 index in Tennessee.

Unknown Daughter (1835/40). Moses Grant had an apparent daughter this age with him in 1840 (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40), but she was not with her widowed mother for the 1850 census, so perhaps married or dead by then.
