I (Marty Grant) am not related to the Reuben Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in him though.

Reuben Grant was born ca 1808/09, or 22 Apr 1809 (per Roger Kammerer) in NC, presumably in Onslow Co, NC.

I have him listed as a son of Solomon E. Grant and Frances Hatch based on an Article # 236 by Roger Kammerer, in Heritage of Onslow Co, NC. I haven't seen what proof was used to place Reuben as a son of Solomon though, so I'll just take it on faith for right now. The same article gives his birth date of  22 Apr 1809.

Reuben Grant would have been about 1 year old by the time of the 1810 census, and his father (in Onslow County that year) had one apparent son in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1800/10), who was most likely Reuben, though it is possible this was Benjamin who was born ca 1805.

Reuben would have been about 11 years old by the 1820 census. His father (in Craven County that year) had only one son aged 10-15 (born ca 1804/10), and this was either Reuben (1809) or his brother Benjamin (c1805). Assuming it was Benjamin instead, then Reuben is probably one of the three boys "under 10", or born ca 1810/20 with his father that year.

Reuben would have been about 21 years old by the 1830 census. His father's household had no one that age in 1830. He did have an male age 30-39 (born ca 1790/1800) with him. That could be Reuben, if mis-enumerated.

Reuben Grant obtained a marriage bond on 25 Mar 1832 in Onslow Co, NC to marry Hester Jarrett. Hester was born ca 1810/20 (per 1840 census). I don't know who her parents were.

They were listed on the 1840 census in Onslow Co, NC, but not near any of the other Grants, nor any Jarretts that I noticed.

By 1850, Reuben was living with his brother Richard H. Grant in New Hanover Co, NC, with his wife and children nowhere to be found. Apparently Hester died before 1850.

On 15 Mar 1853 Reuben Grant obtained a marriage bond to marry Sarah Ann Dawson in Onslow Co, NC. Sarah Ann was born ca 1822/23. I don't know who her father was, but I believe her mother as named Rebecca (born ca 1798).

They were listed on the 1860 census in New Hanover Co, NC and listed in Wilmington Township. There were three children with them who predate their 1853 marriage, and I suspect they are Reuben's from his first wife Hester, and they were living with someone else in 1850 (perhaps with grandparents) and mistakenly listed under another surname. Reuben's mother Frances Hatch Grant was listed in the next household in 1860. (I didn't find Frances in 1850, so perhaps Reuben's kids were with her in 1850, and they were all missed).

They were on the 1870 census in New Hanover County. Lucretia Dawson, age 40, was living with them, I suppose she is probably Sarah's sister.

Reuben died 14 Feb 1880 in New Hanover Co, NC.

Sarah and the children were listed on the 1880 census in New Hanover County. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Children

Reuben and Hester had several children, and Reuben and Sarah had at least four children. I have very little additional data on these so far, so they'll not get their own sections below. There were a few "unknowns" per the 1840 census. I'll list them below for reference.

Unknown Son (1820/25) * Predates marriage, so probably not a son. With Reuben in 1840, gone by 1850. This may be his brother Christopher Dudley Grant who was not found elsewhere in 1840.

Unknown Son (1830/35) * With Reuben in 1840, gone by 1850.

Unknown Daughter (1835/40) * With Reuben in 1840, gone by 1850.
