I (Marty Grant) am a 2nd cousin, 5 times removed to Robert N. Grant.
Robert N. Grant was born ca 1828/29 in Rutherford Co, NC, probably in the vicinity of Mountain Creek. He is a son of Thomas Grant and Catherine Humphries. Robert seems to have been named for his mother's father Robert Humphries. I don't know what his middle initial of "N" might have been for.
Robert N. Grant was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census in Rutherford Co, NC.
He was named in the Will of his grandfather Robert Humphries on 23 Aug 1844 in Rutherford Co, NC. He was listed as "grandson Robert Grant" and was left 25 acres of land. (Rutherford Co, NC Will Book E page 143).
For some reason, Robert's father Thomas Grant sold this same land in 1849, but the deed does not say how Thomas obtained the land from his son. (Rutherford Co, NC Deed Book 45 page 698)
Robert Grant moved to Cherokee Co, NC with his parents and siblings around 1849. It was sometime around this time that he married Elizabeth --- in Cherokee Co, NC. One descendant (June Grant) lists her maiden name as Graham, but I've not seen any evidence to support (or refute) that. There were Graham's in Cherokee County, so this could be accurate. The only reason I question it, is that they listed her husband as "William Grant" instead of Robert, but they were talking about the same family. In any event, Robert N. Grant married Elizabeth ca 1849-1850 in Cherokee Co, NC. Census records (1860 and 1870) show that she was born in GA, though the 1850 census shows NC (but this 1850 record had other mistakes for this same family).
Robert and his new wife Elizabeth were living with his parents for the 1850 census in Cherokee Co, NC.

On 16 Feb 1857 J. R. Love of Haywood Co, NC sold 100 acres to Thomas Grant and son Robert N. Grant in Haywood County on the south side of Jonathan's Creek. (Haywood Co, NC Deed Book I page 25)
Robert and his family and his father Thomas and his family all apparently moved to Haywood about the time of the above deed. They were still there by the time of the 1860 census living side by side

For the Civil War, Robert N. Grant enlisted in Company L, 16th Regiment NC Troops on 4 May 1861 as a Private in Haywood Co, NC. He was present until wounded at New Seven Pines, VA on or about 31 May 1862. His service record shows no further information.
Robert's last child was born in 1865, so I assumed he died about that time. Recently, a descendant (June Grant) told me that he was killed by Bushwhackers at the end of the war. I don't know if this was in Haywood or Cherokee County or elsewhere.
Robert's widow Elizabeth and the children moved back to Cherokee Co, NC, probably to be near her relatives. I don't know if they did this after Robert's death, or during the war. In any event, they were there for the 1870 census living in Murphy Township.

In October 1872, "Lizia Ann Grant" was charged with Bastardy in Cherokee Co, NC. She acted as her own bondsman, and A.H. Mauney also acted as bondsman. I'm not 100% sure, but this has to be Elizabeth, widow of Robert, as there was no other Grant families in Cherokee Co, NC at that time and "Lizia" can be a nickname for Elizabeth. This indicates that she had a child out of wedlock, sometime after Robert's death in 1865, but before or during 1872.
The above is the last record I have for Elizabeth,
assuming it is her record. The 1880 census shows several of her children
still in Cherokee Co, NC in Murphy Township, but she herself is not found. This
means she either died, moved away, or perhaps she remarried.
Robert N. Grant and wife Elizabeth had 6 children as proven by the 1860 and 1870 census.
Mary Grant was born ca 1850 in Cherokee Co, NC. She was not listed on the 1850 census, so probably born sometime after June 1st. She was home with her parents for the 1860 census, and home with her widowed mother in 1870.
I found a marriage record for a Lewis Roberts (listed as "Louis Robards") and Mary Grant dated 7 Jan 1871 in Cherokee Co, NC performed by H. Lovingood, Justice of the Peace. The Lovingoods were neighbors of the Grant family, so I assumed this was the same Mary Grant. However, Eileen Hall, a descendant of Robert N. Grant lists Mary as being married to Cal Queen. I have not been able to make contact with Ms. Hall, but my guess is that Mary was married twice, with Mr. Queen being the second husband. Either that, or one of us is in error.
I wasn't able to find Mary Grant nor Lewis Roberts nor Cal Queen on the 1880 census, at least not in Cherokee Co, NC. Other parts of this family moved to north GA around this time, so perhaps she did as well. Gilmer and Paulding Co, GA is where some of her siblings went. June Grant says that Mary went to Arkansas.
Thomas Grant was born ca 1851/52 in Cherokee Co, NC. He was home with his parents for the 1860 census and with his widowed mother in 1870, and with his brother James Grant in 1880. If he married, it was after 1880.
I did not find Thomas in Cherokee Co, NC in 1900. Perhaps he was in Gilmer or Paulding Co, GA with his siblings.
James M. Grant was born ca 1853/54 in Cherokee Co, NC. He was home with his parents for the 1860 census, and with his widowed mother in 1870.
James M. Grant married Susan --- ca 1878 in Cherokee Co, NC. June Grant, who recently wrote me, told me that Susan's maiden name was Temples. The 1880 census shows this family in Cherokee Co, NC, in Murphy Township, and that Susan was born in GA. Their oldest child was also born in GA, so it is quite possible that they married in GA. James' brother Thomas was residing with them.

According to June Grant, this family moved to Dallas, Paulding Co, GA. I suppose they went prior to 1900, for I didn't find them in Cherokee Co, NC in 1900.
Rachel L. Grant was born ca 1857/58 in Haywood Co, NC (or possibly in Cherokee Co, NC). She was home with her parents for the 1860 census, and with her widowed mother in 1870.
Sometime ca 1876 Rachel married James Samuel Mullins in Cherokee Co, NC. They were listed on the 1880 census in Cherokee Co, NC in Beaverdam Township. I don't have their entry typed up yet, but he was listed as Samuel age 23, she as Rachel L., age 21 with child Mary age 2.
According to Eileen Hall, this family moved to Gilmer Co, GA. An article she wrote that was published somewhere (I can't recall where I found this) listed other children for them, as well as who the children married. I tried to get in touch with Ms. Hall a few years ago, but never got a reply to my letter. Her information showed Rachel dying in Gilmer Co, GA in 1898.
Catherine Grant was born ca 1860/61 in Haywood Co, NC. She was home with her widowed mother for the 1870 census in Cherokee Co, NC. In 1880 she was living with the John Maroney family in Cherokee Co, NC. This was in the Town of Murphy, and Maroney was the Jailer. Catherine was listed as a servant, so probably wasn't related to the Maroney family, though she could be.

According to Eileen Hall, Catherine Grant married Jasper Young. This would have been after 1880. I have no further data on this family.
Jasper Grant was born ca 1864/65 in either Haywood or Cherokee County, NC. He was home with his widowed mother in the 1870 census.
I didn't find Jasper in 1880, nor his mother, so it is possible that he was wherever she was. June Grant reports that Jasper went to Arkansas at some point.
