I (Marty Grant) am not related to Robertson W. Grant as far as I know, but I am very interested in this family.

Robertson W. Grant was probably born in the 1800-1810 timeframe, but I have no evidence to be sure it was during that timeframe. He could have been born earlier than that (but not later).

I don't know where he was born, nor any idea who his parents might have been. He appeared in Surry Co, NC by 1830, for on 13 Mar 1830 Robertson Grant obtained a marriage bond there to marry Sarah Turner. Thomas Chapman was the bondsman.

I found Thomas Chapman (their bondsman) on the 1830 Surry Co, NC census, but I didn't find the Robertson Grant family. On the next page from Chapman were three Turner households (Elias, James and John). One of these could be Sarah's parents. There was only one other Turner household there in 1830 (Mary Turner), but many households away. I don't know where Robertson W. Grant was living in 1830, but he was probably already in Surry, but residing with another family.

Robertson W. Grant died in 1839 in Surry Co, NC. That is the date of his Estate file.

Sarah, widow of Robertson, was listed on the 1840 Surry Co, NC census as head of household. Elias Turner was listed nearby.

On 4 Dec 1840, An Inventory, and an Account of Sales of the estate of "Roberson W. Grant" was presented in Surry Co, NC by John Turner, administrator. I suspect that John Turner was either Sarah's father or brother. (Surry Co, NC Estates 1838-1845 page 89).

I didn't find Sarah Turner Grant, nor any of her children in Surry Co, NC for the 1850 census. By 1850 there were two new Grant families in Surry, but I don't think they were related to Robertson: James S. Grant and his brother John E. Grant

Sarah probably remarried in the 1840's, but I didn't find a marriage record for her in Surry.  Her daughter Virginia Grant was found in nearby Forsyth County, NC residing with Jacob L. Fulkerson (c1820) and his wife Sarah (c1825). It is quite possible that this Sarah Fulkerson was the same as Sarah Turner Grant, but her age doesn't seem to agree.

Children

Robertson W. Grant and Sarah Turner had at least four children, per the 1840 census. Only one of these has been identified.

Virginia Grant (c1835)

Unknown Son (c1835/40)

Unknown Daughter (c1835/40)

Unknown Daughter (c1835/40)

Virginia Grant was born ca 1834/35 in Surry Co, NC. She was apparently home with her widowed mother for the 1840 census. By 1850 she was living with the Jacob Fulkerson family in nearby Forsyth County, apparently a Clerk in the Town of Salem. I don't know how Jacob is related to the Grant family. He was born in PA, but his wife was from NC.

By 1860, Virginia Grant had moved westward to Burke County, NC, and was residing with the J. A. Claywell family in Morganton. Interestingly, he was also a Clerk. I don't know what, if any, relationship there was between his family and the Grant family.

On 2 June 1868 Jacob Seagle obtained a marriage bond in Burke County to marry "Jeanie" Grant. I haven't traced them through the various census records, but apparently they remained in Burke County. I have seen Virginia's death record which listed her mother as "Sarah Turner" and her father as "John W. Grant" (sic). I can't lay my hands on it now to provide the death date, but it was in Burke Co, NC in the early 1900's.
