I (Marty Grant) am a 2nd cousin 5 times removed to William Colin Grant.

William Colin Grant was born 6 Jun 1824 (per an inscription on a powder horn belonging to him), probably somewhere in Rutherford Co, NC, probably in the Mountain Creek area (now Green Hill Township). We don't know for sure who William's parents are, but we believe he is a son of Susan Grant, based on various bits of circumstantial evidence (see Susan's page for more information). If Susan was his mother, we have not yet identified his father.
Family tradition among his descendants state that he was raised by grandparents, but I don't know who they might be.
William C. Grant married Sarah Elizabeth Freeman on 3 Jan 1847 in Henderson or Rutherford Co, NC (no record found in either county). By the 1850 census, they were listed in Rutherford Co, NC in Chimney Rock District (this is the area around Lake Lure and the community of Chimney Rock, right near the Henderson, Rutherford, Buncombe and Polk County borders).

None of William's neighbors in 1850 were anyone connected to the Grant family (as far as I know). He didn't own property at this time.
By 1860 the family had moved to neighboring Henderson County, NC and were listed in Edneyville Township (which borders Chimney Rock township of Rutherford Co, NC). The map shows a Grant Mountain in this area about halfway between the communities of Gerton and Bat Cave just south of US Highway 75. Grant Mountain is between Hickory Creek on the north and Clear creek on the south. It seems that William Grant and family lived somewhere in this vicinity.

By 1860, William had acquired some land. Henderson County deed records should be consulted. I've not done much research in Henderson County records yet.
William C. Grant was said to have served in the Civil War, but after an extensive search by Don Grant Jr and some research by me, we never could find a record. Just recently I stumbled across a William C. Grant who served on the Union side and enlisted in Company E, 3rd Tennessee Mounted Infantry Regiment, USA. He was listed as "William C. Grant, Private", enrolled from Blount Co, TN, and mustered 11 Aug 1864 at Knoxville, TN. The way it reads, it would seem that William was from Blount Co, TN, but that wasn't necessarily the case. Blount County TN wasn't too far from where William C. Grant lived in Henderson Co, NC. I'm not sure this is the same man, but it certainly could be. We didn't find any Confederate records on him.
William C. Grant was still in Henderson Co, NC for the 1870 census. He was listed in Edneyville Township. For some reason the census taker left out William's wife Elizabeth in the listing, but apparently he noted his mistake, and put a mark in the listing (an asterisk) and at the end of the page he listed Elizabeth. For the following listing I've put her back with the family.

William and family were still in Edneyville for the 1880 census, just two houses from his probable sister Malinda Grant Nix. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
According to data shared by their descendants, William C. Grant died on 22 Sep 1891 and Elizabeth on 23 May 1897, both in Henderson County.
William and Elizabeth's children are mostly proven by the census records, but their full names, birth and death dates, and descendant data is all thanks to Don Grant Jr and Don Grant Sr and Bobby Richardson.
