A note about sources

I (Marty Grant) am not related to the William Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in him though.

William Grant was born ca 1755/60, presumably in Northampton Co, NC. He is a son of James Grant and Esther as proven by James' Will dated 18 Nov 1766.

The DAR Patriot Index lists William Grant as being born "1759" which fits within the date range I have (based on the census records). They state he was a Revolutionary War soldier in NC and his wife was "Polly Newet" and that he died Nov 1830.

William Grant married Mary "Polly" Newett, presumably in Northampton Co, NC. I have no proof of her maiden name, other than the DAR Patriot Index stating so. Since she was born ca 1773/74 (per the 1850 census), it is possible that he had a previous wife before marrying her, considering the number of children he had by 1787. From other evidence it seems as though William Grant was married before, and possibly to Elizabeth Rutland (see notes for 3 Sep 1790 below).

On 4 Mar 1786 William Grant witnessed a deed of John Bridgers Jr to William Winborn. (Northampton Co, NC Deed book 7 page 371).

William Grant was listed on the State census for North Carolina (1784-1787), which for Northampton was dated 1787. This census and the later ones show they had a large family. The 1787 census shows William was a slave owner.

1787 census analysis (based on available evidence):

William Grant was listed on the 1790 census in Northampton Co, NC. This census shows William Grant with 11 slaves.

1790 census analysis (based on available evidence):

On 3 Sep 1790 William Rutland made his Will. He named, among several others, a daughter Elizabeth Grant.  He appointed William Grant one of his executors. This would make it seem that Elizabeth was the wife of William Grant, though that is not necessarily the case. But based on the fact that William Grant's wife Mary Newett seems too young to be the mother of his older children, I'm going to say Elizabeth Rutland was his first wife, until other evidence confirms it or disproves it.

William Grant was listed on the 1800 census in Northampton Co, NC. He still had 11 slaves listed.

William Grant died ca November 1830 per the DAR information. He did not appear on the 1840 census in Northampton Co, NC. Although Mary was still living in 1840, she was not listed as a head of household. None of the male Grant's in 1840 Northampton had a woman her age residing with them, so she must have been living with one of her married daughters or someone else.

1840 census analysis (based on available evidence):

* Not found *

In 1850 Mary Newett Grant was listed in Northampton County, close to several of the other Grants. All of her children were gone from their household. There was a Jane Grant (c1833/34) with her, but she would have to be a grandchild, or even great grandchild.

(Note: The dates at the end of each line are not part of the original census, but are approximate birth years based on age)

1850 NORTHAMPTON CO, NC Page 50 House/Family # 817/ 817

GRANT MARY 76 F W NC 1773/1774
GRANT JANE 16 F W NC 1833/1834

Mary died before 1860 apparently, as  I didn't find her listed on that census. Nor did I find Jane.

I don't have any data on the children of William Grant and Mary Newett. Census records show them with a fairly large family. A "Newit Grant" is a strong possibility as one of their children. There are other possibilities as well, but I don't have enough information to make any assumptions at this time. I haven't gone through the Northampton County records yet, so there may be lots of data waiting to be found.
