Alexander Hensley was born ca 1827/28 per his age on the 1850
census (22). He may have been born in Halifax Co., VA where he was
living in 1850. I don't know who his parents are for certain, but he could be a son of William Hensley and Martha Bomar. They were in Halifax when he was, and they did have a son his age per the 1840 census. Alexander would have been about two years old for the 1830 census. There were no Hensleys listed in Halifax that year. William Hensley (who could be his father) is missing in 1830. Alexander would have been about 12 for the 1840 census. William Hensley was the only Hensley in Halifax that year, and he did have two sons aged 10-14 (c1825/30). One of them could be Alexander. Alexander is listed on the 1850 census in Halifax with Flemming Jones and wife Mary (Hensley) Jones. Mary could be Alexander's sister, or a cousin at least.
Alexander Hensley married Martha A. (---) in the 1850's perhaps in Halifax Co., VA or in Patrick Co., VA where they were living by 1860. There were other Hensleys in Patrick at this time but not listed nearby. There are some children listed with the family that pre-date their marriage. Though listed as Hensleys here, other records show they were Clarks instead. They are probably Martha's children from a previous marriage. I found Martha on the 1850 census age 25 with children Robert 4, William 3, and James 6 months. James Clark age 47 was head of household. He was either Martha's husband or perhaps her widowed father.
They are still in Patrick for the 1870 census. Again not listed near any other Hensleys.
They were in neighboring Henry Co., VA for the 1880 census. No children were at home. Their youngest unmarried children were living with their half brother William Clark, though not listed nearby.
