William M. Hensley was born ca 1803/04 per his age on the 1850
census (46). He was born in Halifax Co., VA most likely.
William is a proven son of Nathan Hensley and Martha McCraw as shown on his 1867 marriage record. William would have been about six years old for the 1810 census. Unfortunately that census is lost for Halifax County. William Hensley served in the War of 1812 in Capt. Dillard's company. His pension file contains a lot of family data (File # WO 45486). If his age information is accurate from the census records, he would have been only 11 when the war ended in 1815, so something is amiss here. He would have been about 16 for the 1820 census. His father was listed in nearby Henry Co., VA that year and he did have a son at home aged 16-17. William Hensley married Martha N. Bomar on 21 Jul 1821 in Halifax Co., VA (this may be the marriage bond date, and not the actual marriage, I'm not sure). Martha was born ca 1799/1800 per her age on the 1850 census (50). She was born in Virginia. I don't know who her parents are. I was unable to find William Hensley on the 1830 census. He wasn't listed in Halifax or Henry Counties as far as I could find. His father Nathan was in Henry that year, but no sign of William. They were either missed completely or else were living with relatives (but not with Nathan apparently) so not listed by name. They moved to nearby Henry Co., VA in time for the 1860 census. They weren't listed near any of the other Hensleys, though in the same township with Green Hensley (c1827). A young Rebecca Hensley is living with them in 1860. She wasn't with them back in 1850.
Martha N. Bomar Hensley died sometime between 1860 and 1867, presumably in Henry Co., VA or perhaps in neighboring Patrick Co., VA. On 31 Oct 1865 William Hensley married Jemima Frances "Franky" Hopkins in Patrick Co., VA. The marriage record (as shown in his pension file) listed him as 63, born Halifax Co., VA, resident of Patrick, son of Nathan and Martha Hensley, and her as Gemima F. Hopkins, 27, born Patrick, daughter of Hardin and Betty Hopkins. I wasn't able to find William Hensley on the 1870 census. In his pension application, his widow stated that he died in March 1878 in Henry Co., VA. She was listed as head of household in 1870. Where was he?
Frances was on the 1880 census in Patrick next door to her father Hardin Hopkins and his second wife. Daughter Ida was living with the Hopkins.

The 1850 census proves two children, Napoleon and Catherine. The 1860
census shows one more Rebecca. The 1840 census shows a few others yet
unproven. Martha M. Hensley (c1824) married George W. Hudson;
Alexander Hensley (c1828);
Ann Hensley (c1826) married Nathaniel Martin and Mary J. Hensley
(c1830) married Fleming Jones are all possible children of William.
They all married in Halifax, and lived there, most of them also moving
to Henry and Patrick County later.
