Revision History:
  • 9 Apr 2009 - Updated, added 1840 census data.
  • 4 Mar 2009 New page by Marty Grant, relationship unknown.
Nathan Hensley was born ca 1770/75 per census analysis. He was 50-59 in 1830 (born ca 1770/80) and in 1820 he was age 45 and up (born before 1775). The two records reconcile to ca 1770/75. He was presumably born somewhere in south central Virginia where he lived later on.

I don't know who Nathan's parents are. There is a Lewis Hensley (1740/50) in Henry Co., VA at the same time as Nathan. That could be his father, or an uncle at least.

On 8 Sep 1801 Nathan Hensley obtained a marriage bond in Halifax Co., VA to marry Patsy McCraw. She signed her own consent meaning she was of legal age (over 21). William Phelps was bondsman. They were married 10 Sep 1801 by Rev. Hawkins Landrum.

Martha "Patsy" McCraw was born ca 1780 or earlier if she was already 21 or over when she married in 1801. I don't know who her parents are.

Martha McCraw Hensley died sometime before 26 Nov 1810 for on that date Nathan Hensley obtained a marriage bond in Halifax to marry Jane Priddy. Jane signed her own consent meaning she was 21 or older. John S. Edmons was bondsman.

Jane Priddy was born between 1775 and 1789. This is based on her being 21 or over when she married in 1810, which puts her born before ca 1789. Her 1820 census entry listed her as age 26-44 or born ca 1775/94. The two reconcile to ca 1775/1789. I don't know who her parents are.

The 1810 census is lost for both Halifax and Henry Co., VA.

Nathan is listed on the 1820 census in Henry Co., VA (one county west of Halifax). Lewis Hensley (1740/50) and John Hensley (1790/94) are also listed there. The census is alphabetical so I don't know if they all lived near each other or not.

They are on the 1830 census in Henry. John Hensley and Lewis Hensley are again listed near, but once again it is an alphabetical census so no way to see if they lived near or not. It appears that Jane Priddy Hensley had died in the 1820's.

Nathan was in neighboring Patrick County for the 1840 census. A widow Judith Hensley had been in Patrick for many years, but I don't know if they are connected. They didn't seem to be living near each other in 1840.

I didn't find Nathan on the 1850 census. He probably died before then.

Children of Nathan Hensley and Martha McCraw and Jane Priddy. The 1820 and 1830 census records show several children. A son (William) is proven by his marriage record. The other children are unidentified.
