Lewis Hensley was born ca 1750/60 per his age on the 1840
census (80-89). In 1830 he was also listed as age 80-89 or born ca
1740/50. The two reconcile fine if he was born ca 1750. I don't know
where he was born exactly, though he was in Orange Co., VA when he
married. He could have been born there. I don't know who his parents are. There was a Lewis Hensley in Henry Co., VA later who is a proven son of widow Phoebe (---) Hensley McKinney, but I don't think it is the same Lewis, but I could be wrong. Her children were at least 20 years younger than this Lewis. Lewis Hensley served in the Revolutionary War from Orange County under Capt John Marx in the 14th Virginia Continental Regiment of Col. Charles Lewis. Lewis reported from Henry Co., VA that he enlisted in Orange County in 1776 and was taken prisoner at Charleston and sent to Jamaica. (Virginia Revolutionary War Land Grant Claims 1783-1850 (Rejected) by William Lindsay Hopkins, 1988) His Revolutionary War service records show he enlisted on 4 Feb 1777 for 3 years in the 14th. Lewis was shown on several rosters in 1777 and 1778 as a Fifer under Col Charles Lewis and later under Col. William Davis. He appeared on many rosters, but I only looked at a few of them. On 28 Oct 1785 Lewis Hensley obtained a marriage bond in Orange Co., VA to marry Mary Foster. Eastham Snell was the bondsman. 60 years earlier Samuel Hensley married Martha Snell in Spotsylvania Co., VA (the parent county of Orange). I don't know if this signifies a connection between Samuel and Lewis, but it is interesting anyway. There is a Lewis Hensley listed in Albemarle Co., VA on the 1787 tax list. I don't know if it is the same person or not, but Albemarle is next to Orange County. William Hensley is listed nearby (see marriage bond dated 1789 below). There were other Hensleys in Albemarle then, but not nearby. Lewis Hensley is listed on the 1789 tax list for Albemarle. He was taxed for one white male over age 16 and one horse. William Hensley was on the same list. (Online at 1790 / 1800 Virginia Tax Lists Censuses) On 30 Dec 1789 Lewis Hensley was bondsman in Orange Co., VA for the marriage of Elizabeth Hensley, daughter of William, to Reubin Dollins. William Hensley could be Lewis's father or older brother. The 1790 and 1800 census are lost for Virginia. I don't know where Lewis would have been, whether still in Orange or already moved to Henry. The 1810 census is lost for both Henry and Orange Counties. By 1820 (and perhaps well before) Lewis Hensley had moved south west to Henry County, Virginia. He is listed there on the 1820 census along with Nathan Hensley (1770/75) and John Hensley (c1790). All three were on the same page, but the census was alphabetical, so no way to tell if they were neighbors then or not. John is a son of Phoebe. I don't know who Nathan's parents are. He is too old to be Lewis son by wife Mary Foster. Lewis is old enough to be his father though if married prior to Mary. Lewis's apparent wife in 1820 seems too young to be Mary Foster whom he married in 1785. She could have died and he remarried, or the older woman in the household could be a daughter. 1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1820 Henry Co., VA page 865 Lewis Hensley 000001-10110 Slaves=0000-0000 Analysis: 1 Male 45+ (bef 1775) Lewis Hensley (1750/60) 1 Female 26-44 (1775/1794) Wife? John and Nathan were also still there on the same page, but again the listing was alphabetical. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Henry Co., VA page 195 Lewis Hensley 0200000000100-0010110000000 Slaves=000000-000000 Analysis: 1 Male 80-89 (1740/1750) Lewis Hensley (1750/60) 2 males 5-9 (1820/1825) 1-Son? 2-Son? 1 Female 30-39 (1790/1800) Wife? (1815/20) 0 Slaves Lewis was listed on the 1840 census in Henry, the only Hensley there at that time. Nathan had moved to neighboring Patrick County, and John had moved to Kentucky. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Henry Co., VA page 284 Lewis Hensley 0002000000100-0000002000000 Slaves=000000-000000 Analysis: 1 Male 80-89 (1750/1760) Lewis Hensley (1750/60) 2 males 15-19 (1820/1825) 1-Son? He probably died there in the 1840's. The only Hensleys in Henry in 1850 were Green Hensley (c1825) and William Hensley (c1823). It is interesting that Lewis had boys their age with him in 1830 and 1840. They could be his sons or grandsons. |
Children of Lewis Hensley and Mary Foster.
The earlier census records are lost for Lewis Hensley (1790, 1800 and
1810). His first entry in 1820 shows three females at home. The oldest
one isn't old enough to be Mary, so it could be a daughter or a second
wife. In 1830 and 1840 two boys appear in the family. They could be
Lewis's sons or grandsons.
