Amos Hensley (1775/78) and Susannah --- of Burke and McDowell Co, NC

Amos Hensley was born ca 1775/78 per an analysis of various census records. In 1810 he was age 26-44 (born ca 1765/84), and in 1820 he was also age 26-44 (born ca 1775/94). Combining these two I get ca 1775/84. These are the only census records for him, but he was listed on an undated tax list from the late 1790's, so he had to be at least 21 then, so if the list were dated as late as 1799, he would be born before 1778. My logic on this could be off slightly, but it would seem to narrow his birth date down to ca 1775-1778.

Amos was probably born in Virginia (if so, then in Henry County), though possibly in North Carolina.

I have seen no direct proof of who Amos' parents are, but I (and others) believe that he is a son of Benjamin Henslee (bef 1755) of old Burke (now McDowell) Co, NC. The evidence for this is all circumstantial, but they were neighbors there on Toms Creek and did seem to be associated with one another. This proximity is the only evidence I have tying Amos to the elder Benjamin (bef 1755), but it seems a reasonable connection pending evidence to the contrary.

For the 1790 census, Amos would have been about 12 to 15 years old, so he should be enumerated in the "under 16" age group (born ca 1774/90). His probable father Benjamin was in Burke County that year and three apparent sons in that age group.

On an undated list (but pre-1800 according to the notation), Benjamin Hensley, Amos Hensley and Benjamin Hensley were listed in Captain Dodson's company. This list would have to be in the late 1790's I think for Amos and Benjamin (Jr) to be old enough to be listed, probably ca 1795-1799.

Amos Hensley would be about 22 to 25 years old by the 1800 census so he should be enumerated in the age 16-25 category. Benjamin Hensley did have a son that age with him in 1800 Burke.

Amos Hensley married Susannah --- sometime between 1800 and 1810 in Burke Co, NC (now McDowell Co, NC). Susannah was born ca 1780/84 (don't know where). I don't know Susannah's maiden name.

On 8 Dec 1802, Amos Hensley and Joshua Curtis were chain carriers for a survey for Benjamin Hensley on Tom's Creek in Burke County.

Amos was listed in Burke County for the 1810 census listed two houses from parents. Other neighbors (that I recognize) make it clear they were living in the area that later became McDowell County. There was a younger female with them too old to be their child, so perhaps a sister or niece or other boarder.

On 23 Nov 1812, Amos Henslee obtained a land grant in Burke County on both forks of Tom's Creek adjoining Benjamin Henslee Sr and Benjamin Henslee Jr and John Henslee. (This would be his father, his brother, and possibly John is another brother). (Shared by Laura Schreibman)

On 2 Dec 1814, Amos Hensley received a State Land Grant for 150 acres on South Fork of Lime Cill Creek. One of the chain carriers for the survey was Colbert Hensley (1760/65), who was Amos' Uncle. (Shared by Laura Schreibman)

On 24 Jul 1816, Amos Hensley, Benjamin Hensley and others were bondsman for a Bastardy Bond for Anna Hagins in Burke County. (Shared by Laura Schreibman)

Amos was still in Burke for the 1820 census. An older woman was living with him, perhaps his widowed mother or possibly his mother-in-law. He was listed between Jesse Burgin and James Burgin.

On 30 Nov 1820, Amos Hensley received a 100 acre land grant on Tom's Creek, bordering Benjamin Hensley. (Shared by Laura Schreibman)

In the 1820's, Benjamin moved his family west to Monroe County, Tennessee, arriving before ca 1829. Several other Hensleys were there already, or arriving about the same time. No relationships has been established among them all, but several are related to one another.

Amos Hensley made his Will on 12 Dec 1827 in Burke County, North Carolina, naming his wife Susannah, and "four youngest sons" Amos Madison, John Hervey, Charles Monroe and William Hensley. Also named son Jefferson Hensley. He named his wife as Executor. Witnesses were D. Gillespie and W. Gillespie. His Will was proven in July 1828, so he died sometime between December 1827 and July 1828 in Burke, now McDowell County.

Widow Susannah Hensley was listed as Head of Household on the 1830 census in Burke County, North Carolina. Son Jefferson Hensley was two pages away. Her neighbors included Joshua Curtis Sr and Charity Harris.

Susannah was still in Burke for the 1840 census. She was next door to "Mat." Hensley, who is probably her son Amos Madison Hensley who married ca 1840. Widowed daughter-in-law Catherine Hensley was just a few houses away.

In 1842, McDowell County was formed from the portion of Burke County where the Hensleys resided.

I did not find Susan Hensley on the 1850 census, though I found several of her children in McDowell County. So she apparently died between 1840 and 1850, presumably in McDowell County, North Carolina.

Children

Amos and Susannah had a fairly large family. Amos named several of his children in his 1827 Will including sons Jefferson, John H., Charles M., Amos M. and William. Census records make it clear he had several daughters also.

Unknown Daughter (1794/1800). Amos Hensley seems to have an apparent daughter this age (though he didn't marry until after 1800). She was with him in 1810 (age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800). This may not be a daughter at all, but someone else who was just living with them in 1810, or it may be the same person as the apparent daughter born ca 1804/10 who was not with him in 1810 but was with him in 1820. If this is true, then she was just mis-enumerated in 1810. This child (if born 1794/1800) was not with Amos in 1820, so probably married or dead by then, unless the same person as the daughter born ca 1804/10.

Jefferson Hensley (1804/10) was born ca 1804/10 in Burke, now McDowell County, North Carolina. He is a proven child of Amos and Susannah, as named in Amos' 1827 Will.

Unknown Daughter (1804/10). Amos Hensley seems to have an apparent daughter this age though she was not with him in 1810 (unless listed incorrectly as age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800). She was home in 1820 (age 10-14, born ca 1804/10), but gone by 1830, so probably married or died by then.

Unknown Son (1810/20). Amos Hensley seems to have an apparent son this age. He was home in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), but gone by 1830, so either married or dead (or moved away) by then.

I have no strong suspects for who this son might be. There are several unattached Hensleys this age in neighboring Buncombe (now Yancey) County, but no way to connect any of them to Amos.

Amos Madison Hensley was born ca 1813/14 in Burke (now McDowell) Co, NC. He is a proven son of Amos Hensley and named in his 1827 Will.

Don Godfrey shows Sarah A. Hensley born ca 1818 as a daughter of Amos. She married Charles W. Godfrey before ca 1842 in this area, and she certainly fits here. Don stated that they were both mentioned in the estate records for Amos Hensley.

They were in 1850 and 1860 McDowell Co, NC. In 1860 they were next door to Wilford Huskins and wife Matilda (Hensley) Huskins (daughter of Jefferson Hensley).

John Hervey Hensley was born ca 1820/21 in Burke (now McDowell) Co, NC. He is a proven son of Amos Hensley and named in his 1827 Will.

Unknown Daughter (1820/25). Amos Hensley seems to have an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25), and still home in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25). I don't know who this is, but she either died or married in the 1840's.

This could be Delitha ---, born ca 1821/22, wife of John Honeycutt, who had William M. Hensley living with her in 1850. She fits age-wise, and she did have William living with her. However, I don't know if she was a Hensley or not.

Charles Monroe Hensley was born ca 1823/24 in Burke (now McDowell) Co, NC. He is a proven son of Amos Hensley and named in his 1827 Will. He was apparently home with his widowed mother in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25), and still apparently home in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25).

Charles married Eliza --- before 1850. She was born ca 1816/17 in NC. I don't know her maiden name.

Apparently, Eliza died sometime before 1860, for Charles was living by himself on that census in McDowell Co, NC next door to brother Amos M. Hensley.

I could not find him in 1880, at least not in McDowell County. He may have died by then, or moved away.

William M. Hensley was born 29 Dec 1826 in Burke (now McDowell) Co, NC. He is a proven son of Amos Hensley and named in his 1827 Will. William seems to have been home with his widowed mother in 1830 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and still with her in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30).

William was on the 1850 census living with John Honeycutt (c1819 NC) and Delitha Honeycutt (c1822 NC) and their family. It is possible that Delitha was William's sister. They were next door to sister-in-law Catherine Hensley (widow of Jefferson).

On 23 Mar 1858, "William Hensly" and Martha A. Hall were married in McDowell Co, NC.

They were on the 1860 census in neighboring Yancey County, North Carolina just two houses from Solomon Hensley, son of Berry R. Hensley (c1802) a possible cousin.
