I (Marty Grant) am not related to Amos Madison Hensley as far as I know.
Amos Madison Hensley was born ca 1824/25 (per 1850 census) or ca 1813/14 (per 1860 census). I don't know which of these is more accurate. Both work with certain census records. He was likely born in the vicinity of Tom's Creek in Burke Co, NC (now McDowell Co, NC).
Amos M. Hensley is a proven child of Amos Hensley (c1775/78) and Susannah, as named in Amos' Will dated 1827, giving his full name as "Amos Madison". .
If Amos M. Hensley was born ca 1814, then he should be home for the 1820 census, being "under 10" (born ca 1810/20). Amos Hensley had two males with him that age in 1820, neither of which seemed to be home in 1830. If his birth date of ca 1824/25 is correct, then he was not yet born by the time of the 1820 census.
Amos Madison Hensley was named as a son in his father Amos Hensley's Will dated 12 Dec 1827 in Burke County, North Carolina. (from "Burke County, North Carolina Surviving Will and Probate Abstracts", shared by Laura Schreibman)
Amos would have been about 16 years old by the time of the 1830 census. His widowed mother had no one that age with her, but did have an apparent son age 10-15 (born ca 1815/20), which is close enough to be Amos.
Amos Madison Hensley married Lavina --- sometime just before 1840. She was born ca 1825/26 in NC. Another researcher somewhere along the way has told me that she was a "Biggerstaff", but I don't know what the proof for that is, though it could be correct.
Amos was listed on the 1840 census in Burke County by his widowed mother Susannah, and his widowed sister-in-law Catherine (widow of Jefferson Hensley). He was listed as "Mat. Hensley". It took me a long time to realize that "Mat." was probably an abbreviation for "Madison".

In 1842, McDowell County was created from a portion of Burke County including where the Hensleys lived.
For the 1850 census, Amos and family were listed in McDowell County.

They were still in McDowell for the 1860 census, listed next to brother Charles M. Hensley and just a couple of houses from widowed sister-in-law Jane Hensley (widow of John H. Hensley).

Amos Madison Hensley died sometime prior to 1880, for Lavina was listed as head of household (and widowed) in McDowell Co, NC. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Amos and Lavina had at least nine children per the various census records. I have a little bit of additional data on most of them, but not enough to give them their own sections yet.
