I (Marty Grant) am not related to Benjamin Hensley as far as I know.
Benjamin Hensley was born ca 1813/14 in Buncombe Co, NC (Now Yancey Co, NC).
I have seen Benjamin listed as a son of James and Nancy Hensley, but I don't know if there is any hard evidence for it. They do fit well based on circumstantial evidence. James did have a son this age, per the 1820 and 1830 census. They all apparently went to Clay Co, KY together, and were near each other on the 1850 census there. None of this is concrete proof of a father - son relationship though.
Including James, there are several candidates who might be Benjamin's parents, but not enough proof to make a determination.
Benjamin Hensley would most likely be home with his parents for the 1820 and 1830 census. In 1820 he should be in the "under 10" category (born ca 1810/20), and in 1830 in the age 15-19 category (c1810/15). That helps narrow down the suspects a little bit, but not enough to come to any conclusions.
In 1820, the following Hensley households had at least one male under age 10, or born ca 1810/20: James Hensley (c1780), John Hensley (c1794/1800), Benjamin Hensley (c1790), Berry Hensley (c1783), and Henry "Harry" Hensley Sr (bef 1755). There is no guarantee that any of these were his parents,, but they should be considered primary suspects. Note that James (c1780) is in the list.
In 1830, the following Hensley households had at least one male in the age 15-19 category (born ca 1810/15): James Hensley (c1780), J. B. Hensley who is possibly James B. Hensley (c1805), William A. Hensley (1798), John Hensley (c1794/1800) and Henry Hensley (c1781).
As you can see, this helps a little, but not a lot! The above two records show that James Hensley (c1780) is a possible father for Benjamin, but does not prove the connection.
Benjamin Hensley married Susan --- ca 1830/1838 in Yancey Co, NC. I have no clues as to her maiden name.
Benjamin Hensley was listed on the 1840 census in Yancey Co, NC. His next door neighbors were James Radford and Martha Young. Elie L. Hensley was 8 houses away.

Benjamin and family were listed in Clay Co, KY for the 1860 census. The census taker noted the county of birth for those born in KY. There was an Allen Hensley age 18 (born ca 1841/42) with them. He was probably a nephew, but I don't know who his parents were. (This 1860 census data is from an online transcription at the Clay Co, KY GenWeb page).

I have no additional data on this family beyond this point.
Benjamin and Susan had nine children by 1860. For the most part, I have no additional data on the children, so they will not get their own sections, until I find some information on them.
