The author (Marty Grant) is not related to Isom Hensley as far as can be determined. He did live in the same county (Scott Co, VA) as my ancestor Larkin Hensley (c1761-1805), though many years later. Special thanks to Jim Brown, Laura Schreibman, Ruth Muench, Peg Shannon and a few others who have worked on this family and shared their findings with me, either directly or indirectly. Jim Brown has shared several birth and death dates that I did not have previously. Isom Hensley was born ca 1760/70 per his ages on the 1830 and 1840 census. He was probably born somewhere in VA, though NC is also a possibility. If his parents are who I suspect, then he was likely born in Bedford Co., VA, but that is far from proven. Isom is probably a son of Benjamin Hensley (c1730) and Elizabeth, though I have no direct proof of that connection, but it seems probably, but not proven. The first 27-37 years of his life are a mystery for he does not appear on any public records until 1797 when he appears on the Sullivan Co., TN tax list as "Isam Hensley." If he is a son of Benjamin (c1730), then he may have spent the 1760's in VA, and the 1770s and 80's in North Carolina. Isom Hensley married someone unknown prior to ca 1795. I've not found any record of what her name was. Her 1830 and 1840 census ages gives her a birth of ca 1750/60. Isom may have been in Tennessee already for the 1790 census, but unfortunately this census was lost. (Also lost for Virginia.) He may have been in Tennessee at the time of the 1800 census, but unfortunately this census was lost. (Also lost for Virginia.) He was probably in Sullivan Co, TN at the time of the 1810 census, but unfortunately this census was also lost. On 12 Dec 1817 Isom Hensley signed as a bondsman for the marriage of Robert McCullah and Sarah Winger in Scott Co., VA. He signed with an "X" so couldn't write his name. Scott Co., VA borders Sullivan Co., TN and Hawkins Co., TN. I don't know if Isom lived in Scott at that time, or just near the border. Isom was probably in Sullivan or Hawkins Co, TN at the time of the 1820 census, but unfortunately this census was also lost. He was not listed on that census in Scott Co., VA so still probably in TN. Isom Hensley Sr and Isom Hensley Jr were listed on the 1825 Tax list in Scott Co, VA. Isom Sr had 1 white male over 16 and 1 horse. Isom Hensley Sr was listed on the 1826 Scott Co., VA tax list with 1 white male over 16 and 1 horse. He was not listed on the Scott County tax lists for 1827, 1828, 1829 or 1830. He was probably back across the state line in Sullivan Co., TN for that period. Isom Hensley was found on the 1830 Sullivan Co, TN census. There were no other Hensley families listed close by, but his probable son Benjamin Hensley was a few pages away. (1810/15) --> gone by 1840 Isom did not appear on the 1831 tax list, but he was listed on the 1832 tax list in Scott Co., VA as Isom Hensley. He had 1 white male over 16, and either 1 or 2 horses. His son Isom Jr was listed there as Isam F. Hensley. I may have that backwards as there is really no way to know which was the father and which was the son. Isom Hensley was listed on the 1833 Scott Co., VA tax list with 1 white male over 16, and 2 horses. His son wasn't listed, or else this was the son and the father wasn't listed. No way to know for sure. By 1840 Isom Hensley (Sr) was in Greene Co, TN. This family lived in the multi-county area where Greene, Hawkins, Washington and Sullivan County, TN all have common borders, so he may not have moved far between 1830 and 1840, or perhaps not at all. Isom's probable son Samuel Hensley was one page away, and Isom's probable son Benjamin Hensley was in the same county, but several pages away. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): 1840 Greene Co, TN pg 58 Isam Hensley 0000000001000-0000000000100 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 70-79 (1760-1770) Isam HENSLEY (1760/70) s/o Benj (c1730) & Eliz. 1 Female(s) 80-89 (1750-1760) Wife? (1750/60) Isom Hensley died September 1849 in Scott Co, VA according to the 1850 Census Mortality Schedule. (Thanks to Jim Brown for locating that record.) The record gave his age at death as "78" which puts his birth at ca 1770/71. If he was born early in the year 1770, then that would match his 1830 and 1840 census records, though for some reason I want to push his birth back into the 1760's a little more, but we may never know his exact birth date. I don't know when Isom's wife died, but it was probably during the 1840-1850 time period. She may have died in Greene Co, TN or in Scott Co, VA or anywhere in the multi county region. Children of Isom Hensley. Isom Hensley and Mrs. Hensley may have a had a large family. Unfortunately there is no direct evidence proving any of their children. In 1830 they had a young boy and a teenage girl at home. These are probably grandchildren. Several researchers have come to similar conclusions when trying to determine likely children for Isom. Benjamin, Samuel and Isom (Jr) all seem very likely to be Isom's kids. As far as I know there is no direct proof, but they do fit circumstantially and logically. The fact that all three married McDavids also seems to tie them closely together. Unknown Daughter (1810/15) possibly a grand-daughter Unknown Son (1820/25) probably a grandson Benjamin Hensley was born ca 1794/95 in TN, presumably Sullivan County. He was listed near Isom Hensley in both the 1830 and 1840 census, and he named his first born son Isham Hensley. He married Mary Ann McDavid. He was found on the 1830 Sullivan Co, TN census. He was in Greene Co, TN in 1840 and 1850, and back in Sullivan in 1860 and back in Greene in 1870. See his own page for additional information. Samuel Hensley was born ca 1790/1800 presumably in Sullivan County, TN. Samuel married Catherine McDavid in 1815 in Scott Co, VA. They probably resided in Greene Co, TN in 1820 (census was lost), and he was listed there in 1830 and 1840 census. He was also listed on the 1840 census in Russell Co, VA. He was not found on the 1850 census, but his children were listed on the 1850 census in Russell Co, VA. By 1860 his widow and children were in Sullivan Co, TN and living near his brother Benjamin Hensley. See his own page for additional information. Isom Hensley was born ca 1797/98 in TN, presumably in Sullivan County. Isom married Jane McDavid ca 1821. Isom (or Isham) Hensley was found in 1830 Hawkins Co, TN census.
