Samuel Hensley was born ca 1790. I base this on his age in 1830
giving his birth at ca 1780/90 and in 1840 at ca 1790/1800. The only way
to reconcile these two is to assume he was born ca 1790. He may have
been born in Tennessee, presumably in Sullivan County, but his birth
place is unproven. He could have been born in Virginia instead. Samuel is probably a son of Isom Hensley (c1760/70), though I have no direct proof of that connection, but it seems likely. He was nearby for the 1830 and 1840 census, and Samuel did name one of his sons Isom. Samuel Hensley married Catherine McDavid ("Caty McDavid" on marriage record) on 30 Aug 1815 in Scott Co, VA. Jim Brown and others tell me she was a sister of Mary Ann and Jane McDavid who married Samuel's brothers Benjamin and Isom Jr. Samuel's marriage record included a consent from Michael McDavid for his daughter to marry Samuel Hensley. Robert McCullah and Temple Hensley were witnesses. I don't know how Temple is related, but I suspect he could be a brother to Isom Hensley, and therefore an Uncle to Samuel Hensley. Samuel was probably in Sullivan or Greene Co, TN at the time of the 1820 census, but unfortunately this census was lost. He isn't listed in Virginia in 1820. Samuel Hensley was found on the 1830 Greene Co, TN census. (1825/30) --> gone by 1840 For the 1840 census, Samuel Hensley was still in Greene Co, TN. There is another Samuel Hensley listed in Russell Co., VA in 1840. I once thought the Russell listing was the same person for some of Samuel's children were in Russell Co., VA by 1850. I have now discovered that the Samuel of 1840 Russell is actually a Henley or Hanley and not a Hensley. More on that later. (1830/35) I wasn't able to find Samuel or Catherine on the 1850 census anywhere. Their sons John, Samuel and Isham were in Russell Co., VA that year. Isham was unmarried and living with brother Samuel. As I noted earlier there is a Samuel Henslay on the 1840 census in Russell Co., VA. He is still in Russell in 1850 but listed clearly as Samuel Hanley, though next door is an apparent son Stephen Henley. Samuel is 55, born ca 1794/95 in Wythe Co., VA. His wife is Catherine, 54 born same place. It is an interesting coincidence that this Samuel was also married to a Catherine, and that they were all about the same age. However it is pretty clear that Samuel of Russell isn't the same person as Samuel of Greene. Here is Samuel Henley's 1850 census entry just for reference: Russell Co., VA page 292, # 1008/1008 Stephen Henley, 31, farmer, born Wythe Co., VA; Grace 28 born Russell Co, VA; Martha Jane 1; William P. 6/12. Same page # 1009/1009 Samuel Hanley 55 Farmer, born Wythe Co., VA; Catharine 54; Susannah 29; Peggy 27; William 25 Farmer; (next page, continuation of same family): Catharine 22 born Wythe Co., VA; John 20 Labourer; Polly 17; Jane 10 born Russell Co., VA. I found this same Samuel Henley on the 1830 census in Wythe Co., VA. The 1860 census shows no Hensleys in Russell Co, VA. However, John A. Hensley and Isham Hensley both were found on the 1860 census in Sullivan Co, TN living together, and on the same page with Benjamin Hensley who was their father's brother. And most importantly, residing with John and Isham was an apparent widow Catherine Hensley age 60. I don't know where she might have been in 1850, but she was with two of her children in 1860. Catherine was with her son Mathias on the 1870 census in Scott Co., VA.

John Hensley was born
ca 1819/20 in TN, presumably in Greene County, or perhaps Sullivan
County. He was apparently still at home with his parents for the 1830
and 1840 census. He married Nancy Whitlock sometime between 1840
and 1843 probably in Greene Co, TN. I have no proof of her maiden name.
They later lived in Sullivan and Washington Co, TN.

Samuel Hensley
was born ca 1825/26 in TN, presumably in Greene County, or perhaps
Sullivan County.
He seemed to be home with his parents for the 1830 census in Greene County, Tennessee in the age 5-9 (born ca 1820/25). Samuel seemed to be home with his parents for the 1840 census in Greene County (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25). He also seemed to be with the family for their other listing in 1840 in Russell County, Virginia (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25). Sometime before 1850, Samuel Hensley married Nancy E. ---, possibly in Russell County, Virginia, or perhaps back in Tennessee. Nancy was born ca 1829/30 in North Carolina, county unknown. I don't know her maiden name. Samuel and wife were listed on the 1850 census in Russell County, Virginia next door to brother John Hensley (c1820). Samuel's brother Isham was living with them. They were in Yancey Co, NC by the time of the 1860 census. Isham Hensley
was born ca 1829/30 in TN, presumably in Greene County. He did not seem
to be home with his parents in 1830, so probably born later in the year.
He was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census in Greene
County, Tennessee (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35), and also with their other
listing in Russell County, Virginia (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35).
In 1850, Isham was residing with his brother Samuel Hensley in Russell Co, VA. By 1851 he was back in Tennessee with the rest of the family. Isham Hensley married Matilda E. Hamilton on 23 Sep 1851 in Greene Co, TN. I don't know when she was born, nor who her parents are. She died sometime before 1860 census, possibly in childbirth. For the 1860 census, Isham was residing with his brother Samuel and their widowed mother Catherine in Sullivan County, Tennessee.
