The author (Marty Grant) is not related to Temple Hensley as far as can be determined. He did live in three of the same counties (Washington and Scott Co., VA and Monroe Co., TN) as my ancestor Samuel Hensley (1801-1852). That strongly suggests some sort of connection. Special thanks to Laura Schreibman for data shared on this family. Temple Hensley was born ca 1760/70 (per the 1830 census), presumably somewhere in Virginia or perhaps North Carolina. Since we have found no records for him prior to 1809, it occurs to me that his birth of ca 1760/70 could be way off. We only have the 1830 census record to base that on. His first entry on tax lists (as far as I know) was in 1809, so assuming he was at least 21 then, he was born ca 1788 or earlier. I don't know who Temple Hensley's parents were. He is undoubtedly connected to some of the other Washington Co, VA Hensleys. The 1790 and 1800 censuses are lost for Tennessee and Virginia. I would guess that Temple Hensley would have been in Hawkins Co., TN those years or perhaps over the border in Washington Co., VA. The ages of some of Temple's apparent children (per 1830 census) show that he probably married in the 1800-1810 timeframe, presumably in Southwestern Virginia (Washington County area) or in the corresponding area of Tennessee (Hawkins, Sullivan or Washington County). No marriage record has been located, nor any proof of what his wife's name was, though it is possible that his wife was Elizabeth (---) Hensley (c1783) of Washington Co, TN, an apparent widow. It is far from proven that she was his wife, but it is one possibility. Temple Hensley was listed on the 1809 tax list for Hawkins Co, TN (per research of Ruthe Muench). The 1810 census is lost for Tennessee. Tample Hansly was listed on the 1813 tax list for Washington Co, VA with one tithe and no horses or no slaves He was not listed there on the 1814 or 1815 lists, nor on any previous tax lists. For the War of 1812, Temple Hensley was listed as a Sergeant in Col. Erwin Allison's Regiment of East Tennessee Militia from 7 Jan 1814 to 18 May 1814. (Per research of Ruthe Muench). He apparently was residing in the part of Washington County that became Scott County in 1814, for he was listed on the Scott County tax lists of 1815 and 1816, though not listed on the later ones (1817 and 1818). (From Scott Co, VA tax lists abstracted by Laura Schreibman). For the 1815 Scott County tax list Temple Hensley had 1 white male over 21 and 1 horse and 2 cattle. On 16 Feb 1815 the Scott County Court appointed Temple Hensley to be Constable for the South District. The following day he appeared in court with Jonathan David and Thomas Rogers Jr as his securities (bondsman) and entered a bond of $500. (Scott Co., VA Minute Book 1, per research of Ruthe Muench). On 23 Aug 1815 Temple Hensley (and Robert McCullah) witnessed the marital consent of Michael McDavid for his daughter Caty McDavid to marry Samuel Hensley (c1790/1800) in Scott Co, VA. I don't know how Samuel is related to Temple though obviously they are closely related. (Thanks to Jim Brown for sharing this). On 18 Nov 1815 Temple Hensley was called into Scott County Court accused of swearing a profane oath. He confessed and was fined. (Per research of Ruthe Muench). For the 1816 Scott County tax list Temple Hensley had 1 white male over 21 and 1 horse. He was not listed on the 1817 tax list in Scott County. I can't find my source for this, but I have Temple Hensley back in Hawkins Co, TN by 1819. Temple Hensley was not listed on the 1820 census in Virginia, so it seems likely he was in Hawkins or some other county in Eastern Tennessee that year, as that census was lost for all of Eastern Tennessee. Temple Hensley was listed on the 1830 census in Monroe County, Tennessee. He was only eight houses from Trent Hensley (1770/80), who had also been near him in previous years in Hawkins Co, TN making me think they could be brothers or somehow closely related. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Monroe Co, TN pg 144 Temple Hensly 0120000010000-1002101000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 60-69 (1760-1770) Temple HENSLEY (1760/70) 2 Male(s) 10-14 (1815-1820) Son? Presumably he died between 1830 and 1840 in Monroe Co, TN, or else he moved somewhere else, yet unknown. I have speculated that widow Elizabeth Hensley (c1783) of Washington Co, TN might be widow of Temple Hensley, but I have no solid proof to back that up. She is the right age, and her known children match age-wise with Temple's apparent children (per 1830 census), and some of her children did live in Monroe Co., TN in 1830. Other than that I have nothing definite to connect them. See her page for more on her family. Children of Temple Hensley. Temple Hensley had at least 7 children with him on the 1830 census. None of these have been identified so far, but there are various possibilities. It is also reasonable to assume that he had other children who had left home or had died prior to 1830. Temple could be the father of Benjamin Hensley (c1805), Mary A. Hensley (c1809) and Frances Hensley (c1816). See their own page for more on them. They were in Monroe Co, TN and Washington Co, TN, and ought to be considered possible children of Temple Hensley. Unknown Daughter (1800/10). Temple Hensley had an apparent daughter this age with him in 1830 (age 20-29, born ca 1800/10). I don't know who she was. If Elizabeth Hensley (c1783) was Temple's widow, then this daughter was not with Elizabeth in 1840, so possibly married 1830-1840. Unknown Daughter (1810/15). Temple Hensley had an apparent daughter this age with him in 1830 (age 15-19, born ca 1810/15). I don't know who she was. If Elizabeth Hensley (c1783) was Temple's widow, then this daughter was still home with her in 1840 (age 20-29, born ca 1810/20), but gone by 1850. Unknown Son (1815/20). Temple Hensley had an apparent son this age with him in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20). I don't know who he was. If Elizabeth Hensley (c1783) was Temple's widow, then this son was not with Elizabeth in 1840, so possibly married 1830-1840. This could be Allen Hensley (c1818) who was in Monroe Co, TN in 1840 and 1850. Unknown Son (1820/25). Temple Hensley had an apparent son this age with him in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25). I don't know who he was. If Elizabeth Hensley (c1783) was Temple's widow, then this son was still with Elizabeth in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25), but not with her in 1850, so married (or died) ca 1840/50. This could be Stephen Hensley (c1823) who married in Monroe Co, TN in 1840. He is a good age match, but that is the only evidence I have so far. Unknown Daughter (1825/30). Temple Hensley had an apparent daughter this age with him in 1830 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30). I don't know who she was. If Elizabeth Hensley (c1783) was Temple's widow, then this is undoubtedly her daughter Mahala Hensley (c1826). Otherwise, she is unidentified.
