The author (Marty Grant) is not related to Allen Hensley as far as can be determined. Allen did live in the same county (Monroe Co, TN) as my ancestor Samuel Hensley (1801-1852). Note: This page consists of the combined research of myself and Deborah Burgess who is a descendant of Allen Hensley. Allen Hensley’s exact birth date is unknown. His age varies from census to census. In 1850 he was 32, so born ca 1817-1818; in 1860 he was 48 or born ca 1811-1812; and in 1870 he was 50, or born ca 1819-20. The 1850 and 1870 record are fairly close to each other so we can probably safely say he was born between ca 1817 and 1820. That narrows it down enough. Allen Hensley was born in Tennessee [Proven by 1850 and 1860 census] though the 1870 census gives his birth place as South Carolina, but that seems unlikely and in disagreement with other records. We don’t know what Tennessee county he was born in. His first records are in Monroe County. He may have been born there, but he probably was born somewhere else and moved there while young, but that is just speculation. [Monroe County was formed in 1819 from Indian lands and Roane County.] One secondary record lists his birth place as "Nashville, Tennessee" which seems unlikely, but possible. [Missouri Death Certificate # 43723 for John Harvey Hensley (son of Allen) which lists his father as "Allen Hensley" born Nashville, TN. The informant was Will Burns who was probably John’s brother-in-law or nephew by marriage. Not someone in a position to know that sort of thing.] Allen Hensley’s parents are unknown. So far no direct evidence has been found linking him to any other Hensley families. He has been circumstantially linked with several Hensleys, mainly by living in the same counties. There were other Hensleys in Monroe County at the same time he was there, but we have not been able to positively connect any of them to Allen. Trent Hensley (1770/80) could be his father, or perhaps Temple Hensley (1760/70) instead. Both were old enough, and both lived in Monroe Co, TN when Allen did, and both of them had apparent sons Allen’s age as of the 1830 census. Very little is known about them except they came from the Washington County, Virginia area before moving into Tennessee. (Temple and Trent may be brothers, but that is not proven either). There is a Phillip Hensley (1800/10) who could be Allen’s brother, but that is not proven, though they may have lived in the same section of Monroe County, but that isn’t quite proven either. The 1820 census is lost for eastern Tennessee, including Monroe County, so we can’t determine if any Hensleys were in Monroe County at that time. Allen would only have been 1 or 2 years old then. The 1830 census shows several Hensleys in Monroe County. Allen Hensley would have been about 10-12 years old in 1830. He should be home with his parents at this time. Unfortunately the 1830 census does not list names except the head of household. Everyone else in a household was listed by age and sex categories. There were eight Hensley families living in Monroe County in 1830 (Phillip, Samuel, Thomas, Benjamin, Randle, Trent, Temple and another Benjamin Hensley). Allen ought to be enumerated in the column for males aged 10-14 (which is those born ca 1815-20 which fits Allen’s approximate birth date). Only three of the Monroe County Hensley families of 1830 had one or more males in that age group: Trent, Temple and Benjamin Hensley. Logically you might conclude that one of them has to be Allen’s father, but that isn’t necessarily the case. Allen may not have even lived in Monroe County yet by 1830. The 1830 census alone is not sufficient evidence to link Allen to Trent, Temple or Benjamin Hensley. However, if we ignore those exceptions, we could say that Trent and Temple should be the prime suspects. We can eliminate Benjamin from consideration because we already know who his 10-14 year old son was (Ralzamore M. Hensley) as proven by other sources. Further research may show whether Temple or Trent Hensley could be Allen’s father. Unfortunately the 1830 census is the last record we have for both Temple and Trent Hensley. They apparently died in the 1830's probably right there in Monroe County, Tennessee. Allen Hensley married Mary Ann Williams sometime in the 1830's but before 1838. No marriage record was found for them in Monroe County, so they could have married somewhere else, but early marriage records for Monroe County are incomplete. Mary Ann Williams was born ca 1821-22. [Per her age on the 1850 census of "28"] Her exact birth date is unknown, but her age is fairly consistent from census to census (with one exception). In 1850 she was 28 (born ca 1821-22); in 1860 she was 36 (born ca 1823-24); in 1870 she was 43 (ca 1826-27); and in 1880 she was 57 (born ca 1822-23). The 1870 census entry is off but it also has other problems so should not be relied upon. She was born somewhere in South Carolina, county unknown. [Per the 1850, 1860 and 1880 census.] Mary Ann’s maiden name of "Williams" is proven by several records, and is also based on the fact that a woman named Ellender Williams was living with her and Allen in 1850 and 1860. The census does not state the relationship but it seems very likely that she is Mary Ann’s mother. They were both born in South Carolina, so the relationship seems likely. Why else would she be living there? Of course she could be an unmarried aunt instead, but mother seems most likely. Mary Ann’s father has not been identified yet, other than as a Mr. Williams. Mary Ann’s mother was named Ellender and was born ca 1801 in South Carolina. We don’t’ know her maiden name. Mr. Williams apparently died before 1840 in Monroe County, Tennessee. Ellender seems to be living with Allen and Mary in 1840 (or someone her age is with them, no names are given), and she is definitely with them in 1850 and 1860. No record of her after 1860. So she probably died after 1860, probably in Roane County, Tennessee. Mary Ann’s 1880 census entry shows that she (Mary Ann) was born in South Carolina (which is correct) and that her father was born "At Sea" which may be true, or maybe not. The only reason I doubt it is that Mary Ann lists her mother’s birth place as "England" when other records clearly show Ellender was born in South Carolina. Unfortunately we have no other records to compare this to. Allen Hensley was listed on the 1840 census in Monroe County, Tennessee. Their were five Hensley households in all that year in Monroe County. None of the other Hensleys were listed near Allen (they were Thomas, Samuel, Stephen and Phillip Hensley). See their pages for more on them. Allen was listed in the 27th Regiment of Monroe County in 1840. Neighbors on either side of them were William Upton Jr and Daniel Thompson. Allen’s household included 2 apparent sons, his wife and an older woman who is probably Mary Ann’s mother Ellender Williams. They owned no slaves. 1840 CENSUS Monroe County, Tennessee Page 195 (National Archives Microfilm M704-528)

He may have died young, sometime between 1840 and 1850. On the other hand he may have been a nephew or someone else just living with them at that time and not their son. There is no way to be sure. Allen and family were listed on the 1850 census in Monroe County, Tennessee. This was the first census to list all family members by name. There were four other Hensley families listed in Monroe that year also, but none were listed anywhere near Allen's family. They were: Catherine Hensley (c1828 TN) living with a West family; Nancy Hensley (widow of Phillip) and her children; Samuel Hensley and family and his brother Thomas Hensley and his family. Allen and family were the only Hensleys in the 12th Civil District in 1850. Their next door neighbors on either side were the family of Sarah Henry and family and W. K. Waugh and family. No known relation to either of them. They appear to be in the neighborhood of Hopewell Springs which is north east of Madisonville about halfway between that town and Tellico River. I can’t be sure how close they were to the present town of Hopewell Springs, but somewhere in that general area. 1850 CENSUS Monroe County, Tennessee, Page 64 (National Archives Microfilm M432-891) Township: 12th Civil District 3 Oct 1850 House # 879 / Family # 879 Name Age Sex Race Occupation Real Value Birth Place Alen Hensley 32 M W Laborer 0 Ten. * Mary Ann “ 28 F W SC * William “ 12 M W Ten. He was listed in the 13th Civil District, Alen Hensley, and taxed for 1 poll (himself, presumably). I don’t know why they moved there. There were Hensleys in that county before them, but not in that particular district. Robert Hensley (1760) and his son Benjamin Hensley (1797) were in Roane County for several years. It is unknown if they were closely related to Allen Hensley. I’ve seen no evidence to suggest that they were related to him. They lived in the section of Roane that later became Loudon County (in 1870) which was well to the southeast of where Allen and family lived. Allen Hensley and family were listed on the 1860 census in Roane County, Tennessee. There were several other Hensleys in the county as well, but in other districts and not near Allen who was in the 13th Civil District, where his was the only Hensley family listed. They seem to be living in the area in extreme north western Roane County near the present town of Rockwood. Their 1860 Post office was listed as Post Oak Springs. There is a Postoak community and a Postoak Creek near Rockwood. Their neighbors in 1860 on either side were the families of James Cook and William M. Ellis, no known relation to the Hensleys. Note that Allen’s age is off on this entry. Mary Ann’s mother Ellender was still living with them. 1860 CENSUS Roane County, Tennessee, Page 217 (National Archives Microfilm M653-1269) Handwritten Page 231 Township: 13th District Post Office: Post Oak Springs 14 Aug 1860 House # 1749 / Family # 1616 Name Age Sex Race Occupation Real / Pers Value Birth Place Allen Hensley 48 M W Laborer $ 0 / $ 60 Tenn. * Mary A. “ 36 F W SC * Margaret J. “ 18 F W Tenn. † Martha C. “ 15 F W “ † John H. “ 11 M W “ Alx “ 6 M W “ Thos A. “ 3 M W “ Ellender Williams 59 F W SC * Unable to read or write † Attended School within the year At some point in the 1860's the family moved into Kentucky. Perhaps the Civil War (1861-1865) caused hardships and motivated them to move. They moved to Livingston County, Kentucky which is on the Ohio River opposite the state of Illinois. This is quite a distance from Roane County, Tennessee. I don’t know what drew the family to that location. Perhaps they had relatives already there. Livingston County was formed in 1798. There were no Hensleys in that county prior to the 1860's as far as I know. For the 1870 census Allen and family are living next door to the Nathaniel Hensley family. He and his family members were mostly born in Indiana. Other records show him to be a son of Berryman Hensley. Who is he to Allen? A logical conclusion would be he was somehow related to Allen Hensley, certainly a cousin at the least. The 1870 census entry contains some mistakes for Allen’s family, listing Allen as being born in South Carolina and Mary as being born in Alabama. The children were correctly listed as being born in Tennessee. Nathaniel and family were listed as born in Indiana, though other records show them all from Kentucky. Nathaniel's age is off as well. It could be pure coincidence that they wound up as neighbors, but that is hard to accept. 1870 CENSUS Livingston County, Kentucky, Page 164B (National Archives Microfilm M593-482) Handwritten Page No. 24 Township: Carrsville District No. 5 Post office: Smithland City 5 Sep 1870 House # 164 / Family # 169 Name Age Sex Race Occupation Real / Pers Value Birth Place A. Other records do confirm that Allen and family lived in this county. Allen Hensley died sometime between 1870 and 1880. I don’t know if he died in Livingston County or in neighboring Crittenden County (where his wife and children were living in 1880). Members of Allen’s family moved into neighboring Crittenden County sometime before 1880. I don’t know if Allen died before or after the move. Mary and some of her children and grandchildren were listed on the 1880 census there. They were living in Hurricane Township. There were no other Hensleys in that county in 1880 other than Mary and family. Her son Thomas was married by this time and living nearby. Mary’s birth place is listed correctly, but she lists her father’s birth place as "At Sea" which is interesting, except that she also lists her mother’s birth place as "England" when other records clearly show her mother was born in South Carolina. That brings her father’s birth place into question, and it should also be noted that her surname is spelled wrong as well, so it begs the question as to who reported their data to the census taker, a neighbor perhaps? 1880 CENSUS Crittenden County, Kentucky, Page 73B (National Archives Microfilm T9-410) Township: Hurricane Precinct Handwritten Page : 26 Supervisor’s District: 7 Enumeration District No. 57 18 & 19 June 1880 House # 244 / Family # 245 Name Race Sex Age Rela Marital Occupation Birth Place/F/M Mary A. Mary Ann Williams Hensley died sometime after 1880, presumably in Crittenden County, Kentucky. She did not appear to be listed on the 1900 census as far as I could find, so she must have died between 1880 and 1900. Children of Allen Hensley and Mary Ann Williams. They had eight children as proven by the various census records and other sources. William Richardson Hensley (1838) Margaret Josephine Hensley (c1841) Martha Caroline Hensley (1845) Unknown Son (1835/40). Allen Hensley had an apparent son this age. He was with him for the 1840 census (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40), but gone by 1850, so probably had died by then. It is entirely possible this wasn't a son at all, but just someone else who happened to be living with them in 1840. It is also possible that it was a son, but that he didn't die before 1850, but wasn't home then for some reason (at school, hired out, etc.) and by 1860 he was on his on somewhere. William Richardson Hensley was born 20 Mar 1838 (per Kim Rice, a descendant of his.) This birth date matches his age on the 1850 census of 12 (born ca 1837-38). He was born in Tennessee, presumably in Monroe County. His middle name of "Richardson" may be a family name. Nathaniel Hensley (1809) who was a next door neighbor to William’s father in 1870, was a grandson of Richardson Hensley (1748-1823) of Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana. Was William named for him? Or is this just a coincidence? "Richardson" is a pretty common surname, and a pretty common middle name, so it may not mean much in this case, though it may be quite significant. William Hensley would have been 2 years old in 1840. His parents did have two boys aged "under 5" with them in 1840 in Monroe. One of them was certainly William. William was home with his parents for the 1850 census in Monroe County, Tennessee, listed as 12 years old. William’s parents moved to neighboring Roane County, Tennessee before 1857, but William may have remained in Monroe for awhile afterwards or else returned there, for on 10 Sep 1858 "W. R. Hensley" married "Mary Ann Raulson" in Monroe County. Mary Ann Roilston (or Raulston) was born ca 1841/42. [Per her age on the 1860 census. Researcher Kim Rice lists Mary Ann’s birth date as 28 Nov 1840.] She was born in Tennessee, but I don’t know what county, perhaps Monroe or Roane, though that is just a guess. I believe Mary was a daughter of John Raulston and Margaret (—). I have no direct proof of this, but they did live next door to William Hensley and wife Mary in 1860. I tried to find the John Raulston family on the 1850 census but was unsuccessful. William and family moved to Roane County before 1860, but he did not live in the same section as his parents. They lived in the 13th Civil District, while William lived in the 5th District which later became Loudon County (in 1870). They were listed in Roane County on the 1860 census. They were living next door to John and Margaret Raulston on one side (Mary’s parents?) and Mitchell Raulston on the other side (Mary’s brother?) There were no other Hensleys listed nearby, but the John and Catherine Hensley family were also in the 5th Civil District, but not nearby. John Hensley was born ca 1838 in North Carolina (county unknown) and married Catherine Wallace on 2 Nov 1853 in Roane Co, TN. He died in1862 in the Civil War, and Catherine married Henry Miles on 21 Oct 1866 in Roane County. I don’t know who John Hensley’s parents were. He is the right age to be the unknown son of Allen Hensley, but Allen already has a proven son named "John" so this other John can't be his also. 1860 CENSUS Roane County, Tennessee, Page 152B (National Archives Microfilm M653-1269) Handwritten Page: 102 Township: 5th District Post Office: Loudon, Tenn. 10 July 1860 Name Age Sex Race Occupation Real / Pers Value Birth Place House 772 / Family # 711 John Raulston 40 M W Laborer $ 0 / $ 200 Tennessee Margaret 35 F W “ Geo. They were listed on the 1870 census in Knox County in the 10th Civil District, somewhere near Concord (which was their post office in 1870). Concord is south west of Knoxville, and only about 12 miles from Loudon town (which was their post office back in 1860), so they apparently did not move too far. There were several other Hensleys in the 10th Civil District as well, including the family of Eliza W. Hensley who was just six houses from William in 1870. (More on her shortly). None of the others were that close. 1870 CENSUS Knox County, Tennessee, Page 195B (National Archives Microfilm M593-1541) Handwritten Page No. 30 Township: Civil District No. 10 Post office: Concord 23 Aug 1870 Name Age Sex Race Occupation Real / Pers Value Birth Place House # 203 / Family # 200 William Hensley 40 M W Farm Hand $ 0 / $ 100 Tennessee Mary 34 F W Keeping House “ George 11 M W at home “ James 10 M W at home “ Margaret 7 F W at home “ William 5 M W at home “ Mary 4/12 F W born Jan “ House # 209 / Family # 206 Eliza Hensley 50 F W Keeping House Tennessee John 16 M W Farm Hand “ William Tucker 10(19?) She was in Blount Co, TN in 1850 and 1860, moving to neighboring Knox County in the 1860's. Her children were Elizabeth Jane Hensley (c1842) who married Isaac Tucker; John L. Hensley (c1854) and William Hensley (c1859). Eliza’s parents are unknown. Eliza W. Hensley (c1820) could easily be a sister to Allen Hensley (c1818) so therefore William Hensley’s aunt. This is just speculation of course, but Blount County borders Monroe County where Allen was from. William Richardson Hensley and family left Knox County and moved south to Lawrence County, Alabama around ca 1875. I don’t know what drew them there. There were other Hensleys in that county, but not in the same district they moved to. 1880 CENSUS Lawrence County, Alabama, Page 315B (National Archives Microfilm T9-18) Township: Township 5, Range 6, Beat No. 1 Handwritten Page : 18 Supervisor’s District: 1 Enumeration District No. 164 11 June 1880 House # 160 / Family # 160 Name Race Sex Age Rela Marital Occupation Birth Place/F/M W. Researcher Kim Rice says that William Hensley died in 1894 and is buried in Rockwood in Roane County, Tennessee. We don’t know what her source for this information is. Apparently, William and family must have moved back to that area in the 1880's. This sounds reasonable for Rockwood is the community where William’s parents were living in 1860. There is evidence to show some of their children were in Roane County after 1880, so that seems to confirm that William and Mary Ann came back there as well. I was unable to find Mary Ann on the 1900 census, so she may have died before then. I did find their son George R. Hensley in Roane County in 1900. He had a younger sister (Alice-1882) living with him. That probably means that their mother was dead by then. Alice was born in Alabama, so they apparently moved from Alabama back to Tennessee between 1882 and 1894 (William’s death year). Mary Ann Raulston Hensley is apparently buried in Roane County, Tennessee. No cemetery information has been located yet. William R. Hensley and Mary Ann Raulston had nine children as proven by the various census records. Margaret Josephine Hensley was born ca 1840-41 (based on her age on the 1850 census of 9 years). She was born in Tennessee, presumably in Monroe County. Her full name must be "Margaret Josephine" because in 1850 she was listed as "Josephine" but in 1860 she was listed as "Margaret J." Apparently she used "Josephine" as her main name. Josephine was home with her parents for the 1850 census in Monroe County, Tennessee, listed as 9 years old. The census entry for her shows that she had attended school within the year. Her parents moved to neighboring Roane County, Tennessee before 1857, and Josephine went with them. Josephine was listed with her parents on the 1860 census in Roane County, Tennessee. On 27 Dec 1860, "Josephine Hensley" married Thomas Hudson in Roane County, Tennessee. (Note, "Hudson" is often spelled "Hutson" instead). Thomas Hudson was born 22 Oct 1837 in Halifax County, Virginia, a son of Ward Hudson and Martha Vaughn (Birth place, date and parents proven by Thomas' Death Certificate # 29168). For the 1860 census, Thomas Hudson was living with Wiley Hudson (c1827 VA) (his brother?) in Roane County, just two houses from Allen Hensley and family. Thomas was listed as age 22 (born ca 1837-38) and born in Tennessee. Later records give his birthplace as Virginia. Around 1864 or so, the Hutsons moved to Livingston County, Kentucky, followed shortly by Josephine’s parents. Thomas and Josephine and family were listed on the 1870 census in Livingston County, Kentucky. They were in the same district with her parents, but not listed near them. R. [Livingston County, Kentucky Death Register 1876, page 55.] Thomas Hutson and children were listed on the 1880 census in Livingston County. The household was quite large with other relatives living there as well, including Thomas’s second wife Catherine Heath whom he had married 24 Oct 1878 in Livingston Co, KY. "Heath" appears to have been her married name and not her maiden name. One of the women in the household was listed as Thomas’ mother, but I don’t think she was his mother, but probably the mother of his wife Catherine instead. Her name was Susannah Harrell. If that is Catherine's mother, then perhaps Harrell is Catherine's maiden name. It is possible that two households were accidentally listed as one here, or then again, all these folks could have been under one roof. 1880 CENSUS Livingston County, Kentucky, Page 387D (National Archives Microfilm T9-429) Township: Carrsville Mag. Montgomery. Thomas Hudson died on 8 Nov 1911 (per death certificate) in Livingston County, and is buried there at the Hopewell Cemetery. Thomas Hudson and Margaret Josephine Hensley had five children. Four are proven by various census records, one more proven by Livingston County Death Records.
Martha Caroline Hensley was born 15 Feb 1845 (per her death certificate). This roughly coincides with her age on the various census entries. Her middle name of "Caroline" is also proven by her death certificate. Martha Hensley was born in Monroe County, Tennessee (as proven by her death certificate). The birth record of her son Leonidas Thompson shows his mother was born in Roane County, Tennessee. Either could be correct, but we have no evidence that Martha’s parents were in Roane County at the time Martha was born. Death certificates are notoriously inaccurate about birth places and parents names, so one would assume the birth record of her son may have more accurate information, but it all depends on who provided the information to the record keeper. Was it Martha herself? She should know where she was born. Perhaps Mr. Thompson provided the data and was confused, knowing she had lived in Roane County before coming to Kentucky and assumed she was born there. Martha was home with her parents for the 1850 census in Monroe County, Tennessee, listed as 6 years old. Her parents moved to neighboring Roane County, Tennessee before 1857, and Martha accompanied them. Martha was listed with her parents on the 1860 census in Roane County, Tennessee, listed as 15 years old. This census shows that she had attended school within the census year. Martha Hensley married George W. Evans (Evins) on 19 May 1864 in Roane County, Tennessee. According to pension records, he was killed in Nov 1864 between Roane and Union Counties, Tennessee by "carpet baggers." Sometime in the 1860's, Allen Hensley and family moved to Livingston County, Kentucky. Martha went with them. Martha Hensley Evans married James T. Thompson on 20 Aug 1868 (per pension file), presumably in Livingston County, Kentucky. James was born March 1846 (per 1900 census) somewhere in Kentucky, a son of William Thompson and Evalee (Canady) Thompson (parents proven by his death certificate # 15498). They were listed on the 1870 census in Livingston County, Kentucky in the same district with her parents and siblings, but not real close to any of them. They were listed next to several other Thompsons, presumably James’s relatives. 1870 CENSUS Livingston County, Kentucky, Page 167 (National Archives Microfilm M593-482) Handwritten Page No. 29 Township: Carrsville Precinct No. 5 Post office: Smithland, KY 7 Sep 1870 House # 198 / Family # 204 Name Age Sex Race Occupation Real / Pers Value Birth Place J. It does not appear that Martha and her first husband had any children together.
John Harvey Hensley was born ca 1846/47 (per age on 1850 census of 3), though his death certificate lists his birth date as 17 Feb 1851. The month and day may be right, but "1851" can’t be right. John was home with his parents for the 1850 census in Monroe County, Tennessee, listed as 3 years old. John’s parents moved to neighboring Roane County, Tennessee before 1857, and John accompanied them. John was listed with his parents on the 1860 census in Roane County, Tennessee, listed as 11 years old. Sometime in the 1860's, Allen Hensley and family moved to Livingston County, Kentucky. John went with them. John was not with his parents for the 1870 census, but was listed in the same county with another household where he was a hired laborer. He was probably not related to that family. His age was off slightly and his birth place was wrong, but it is most likely him. Strangely the entire family is duplicated on the next page, so John is listed twice on the 1870 census. Both listings follow. There are only slight differences between them. 1870 CENSUS Livingston County, Kentucky, Page 231 (National Archives Microfilm M593-482) Handwritten Page No. 29 Township: Salem Post office: Smithland, KY 3 Sep 1870 House # 202 / Family # 208 Name Age Sex Race Occupation Real / Pers Value Birth Place G. Sarah Vaughn Hensley died on 18 May 1875 due to complications of childbirth (after apparently giving birth to twins, one of whom also died on that same date). Francis Hensley was born ca 1850 (per age on 1850 census of 2 months). That census entry was supposed to be as of June 1st, 1850, so he may have been born ca April 1850 or thereabouts. Francis was home with his parents for the 1850 census in Monroe County, Tennessee, listed as 2 months. Francis’s parents moved to Roane County, Tennessee by 1857. Francis may have went with them or he may have died before then. Francis was not with his parents on the 1860 census. It seems likely that he died in the 1850's. Alexander Hensley was born ca 1853/54 (per age on the 1860 census), presumably in Monroe County, though he may have been born in Roane County instead. We don’t know exactly when his parents moved to Roane from Monroe, though certainly by 1857. Alexander was with his parents for the 1860 census in Roane County ("Alx" age 6, born Tenn.) They family moved to Livingston County, Kentucky in the 1860's. Alexander went with them. He was with his parents for the 1870 census ("Alexander" age 16, born Tennessee.) Alexander was with his widowed mother in 1880 in Crittenden County, Kentucky ("Alexander" age 26, born TN.) I was unable to locate Alexander Hensley on the 1900 census in Kentucky. He may have died before then, or left the state. Thomas A. Hensley was born ca 1856/57 (per age on the 1860 census), presumably in Roane County, Tennessee. We don’t know what his "A" middle initial stands for. Perhaps "Allen" after his father? Just a guess. Thomas was with his parents for the 1860 census in Roane County ("Thos A." age 3.) They family moved to Livingston County, Kentucky in the 1860's. Thomas went with them. He was with his parents for the 1870 census ("Thomas A." age 15.) Thomas A.
