I (Marty Grant) am not related to Benjamin Hensley as far as I know.
Benjamin Hensley was born ca 1796/97 (per 1850 census) in Tennessee, presumably Hawkins County.
Benjamin is a son of Robert Hensley (1760) which seems to be proven by Robert residing with Benjamin for the 1850 census. Besides this, I've found no other evidence, but this seems good enough.
Benjamin was probably home with his parents for the 1800, and 1810 census, but unfortunately, those records were lost for Tennessee.
Benjamin Hensley served in the War of 1812 and his Pension files gives some family data. He served in the East Tennessee Volunteers in the 2nd Regiment (Lillards) as a Private. He enlisted from Hawkins County. Anthony Hensley (c1791) was in the same regiment. (Pension Files: SC-8360 and WC-14949)
Benjamin Hensley married Mary Gallion in Grainger Co, TN. Her name and the place of marriage (but not the date) was given in the Pension records. Her name was listed there as "Galyon". I believe they married prior to 1820. Mary was born ca 1796/97 in North Carolina. I don't know who her parents were.
There were other Hensley-Gallion connections in this timeframe and in the same area, so they represent clues to family relationships. Joseph B. Hensley married Rachel Gallion in 1830 in Roane. He could be a brother to Benjamin, and she a sister to Mary. Just speculation, but very reasonable.
Benjamin Hensley was probably listed on the 1820 census in Hawkins or Roane County, but the 1820 census was lost for all of east Tennessee, including those two counties.
At some point, Benjamin moved to Roane County, Tennessee. I don't know when, but probably in the 1820's. He was listed there for the 1830 census. He was near several Gallions, all of them about Mary's age, so possible brothers of hers, though there was John Gallion who was old enough to be her father, and just a few houses from the Hensleys. Benjamin was listed between William Gallyon (brother-in-law?) and Reuben Maynard. They were just three houses from Harmon Griffin (married to Amy Hensley in 1817), possibly a sister.

Benjamin was still in Roane for the 1840 census. His name is listed under a tape mark, so it is hard to make out, but it is him.

On 4 Feb 1850, Benjamin was appointed guardian to orphans Benjamin F. Hensley and Samuel Hensley. The record does not say so, but I believe they are his grandchildren, though it is possible that they are his nephews instead. (Roane Co, TN Minute Book Q page 51, thanks to Laura Schreibman for sharing this)
Benjamin Hensley and family were listed on the 1850 census in Roane with his widowed father Robert Hensley residing with him. They were listed with the same house number (meaning they were in the same physical house), but with different family numbers. Two of Benjamin's orphaned grandchildren were living with Robert (their great grandfather).

Mary Gallion Hensley died on 27 Dec 1857 (per War of 1812 Pension application) in Roane Co, TN.
On 9 Mar 1860 "B. Hensly" obtained a marriage bond in Roane County to marry Sarah Montgomery. They were married on 15 Mar 1860 (per Marriage records), though in the Pension records, Sarah says they married 13 Mar 1859. I don't know which is correct. She said they were married by Isaac A. Clark, Justice of the Peace. She also stated that she was previously married to J. M. Montgomery who died in 1849. It doest not give her maiden name.
Benjamin and family were listed on the 1860 census in Roane County with several of Sarah's Montgomery children living with them, and Benjamin's two orphaned grandchildren were with him.

** I don't have Benjamin and Sarah on the 1870 census yet. I did not find them in Roane, but I could have missed them.
Later in 1870, Loudon County was created from the eastern portion of Roane (and other counties), including the section where the Hensleys resided.
I have two conflicting dates of death for Benjamin Hensley, and I can't find my source for either of them, so I don't know which of them is correct. I have "27 Jul 1876" and "29 Jul 1878" for his death date.
Benjamin was certainly dead before 1880, for that year his widow Sarah was listed as head of household in Loudon County, Tennessee. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Sarah died sometime prior to 4 Aug 1894, for on that date she was dropped from the Pension rolls due do her being dead. I don't have an exact date of death for her. I assume she died in Loudon Co, TN.
Benjamin and Mary Gallion had several children, and Benjamin and Sarah had at least one child together (and Sarah had several by her first marriage to Mr. Montgomery).
Unknown Son (1800/10). Benjamin Hensley had someone this age with him for the 1830 census (age 20-29, born ca 1800/10). I suspect this was a brother or other person living with them, but not a son. This could be Joseph B. Hensley (c1810) who I suspect is Benjamin's brother. He was not with Benjamin any longer in 1840, but Joseph was a head of household that year (for the first time) so it fits.
Unknown Daughter (1810/15). Benjamin Hensley had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him for the 1830 census (age 15-19, born ca 1810/15), but gone by 1840, so probably married or dead by then (though possibly still home in 1840 if listed age 20-29, born ca 1810/20, which I have for the next daughter below, but could have them mixed up).
There is a marriage record in Roane County dated 14 Sep 1835 between "Margaret Hensley" and William Giles. This could certainly be this unknown daughter. Margaret is a proven child of Benjamin and Mary, but I don't know when she was born, as I have not found her on a census record yet. Her son James Calvin Giles' Civil War Pension Questionnaire shows her a child of Benjamin and Polly Hensley of Roane Co, TN.
Unknown Daughter (1815/20). Benjamin Hensley had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him for the 1830 census (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20), and still home in 1840 (age 20-29, born ca 1810/20), but gone by 1850 so probably married or dead by then.
John A. Hensley was born ca 1819/20 in Tennessee, presumably in Roane County. He is a proven son of Benjamin Hensley by two sources, one he was named in a deed with his brothers William and Marshall dated 1859 selling land formerly belonging to Benjamin Hensley. He is further proven by residing with his brother William on the 1900 census (Wright Co, MO) and listed as his "brother".
John Hensley married Permelia Cooley in 1849. See their own page for additional information.
Robert F. Hensley was born ca 1820/25 in Tennessee, presumably in Roane County. He is not a proven son of Benjamin Hensley, but I think the evidence is strong for him being a son. Benjamin did have an unknown son this age in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25), and still home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30), but gone by 1850, so married or dead by then.
There was a Robert F. Hensley who married Nancy K. Brock on 24 Jan 1842 in Roane Co, TN. I'm fairly sure he is a son of Benjamin based on various bits of circumstantial evidence.
Apparently both Robert and wife Nancy died before 1850. They left two orphaned children: Benjamin F. and Samuel Hensley, who, in 1850, were assigned to their grandfather Benjamin as their guardian. (The record did not state that he was their grandfather).
These two boys were living with Benjamin (their grandfather) in 1850, listed with their Great Grandfather Robert Hensley.
In 1860 they were with grandfather Benjamin.
Unknown Son Benjamin Hensley had an apparent son this age. He was with him for the 1830 census (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25), but gone by 1840, so probably married or dead by then.
I have no prime suspects for this son. This could easily be Stephen H. Hensley (c1823) who married in the year 1840 in neighboring Monroe County, and was living there on that census. Besides being the right age, he also later went to Wright Co, Missouri just as several of Benjamin's other children did.
Presha Hensley was born ca 1826/27 in Roane County, Tennessee. She is not a proven child of Benjamin Hensley, but circumstantial evidence is strong for placing her here. She was near Benjamin and family in Roane County, and when most of his children moved to Wright Co, MO, her family did also. This doesn't prove that they are father and daughter, but strongly suggests it.
Benjamin Hensley did have an apparent daughter her age with him in 1830 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and still home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30), but gone by 1850, so married or dead by then.
On 3 Mar 1849 Andrew J. King obtained a marriage bond in Roane Co, TN to marry "Presha Hensley" (her name is spelled various ways, including "Preshia"). They married on 6 Mar 1849. Andrew Jackson King was born ca 1828/29 in Tennessee, county unknown. I don't know who his parents were.
For the 1850 census, Andrew and Presha were listed in Roane County just a few houses from Harmon Griffin who was widowed from Amy Hensley, relationship unknown. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
I don't have them in 1860 or 1870 yet, but in 1880 Andrew and Presha were in Wright County, Missouri near her various siblings.
Nancy Hensley was born ca 1828/29 in Roane County, Tennessee. She was apparently home with her parents for the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and apparently home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30), and still home in 1850 ("Nancy" age 21).
On 25 Apr 1851, Edward Dennis obtained a marriage bond in Roane County to marry "Nancy Hensley". They were married on 27 Apr 1851. Edward was born ca 1826/27 in Tennessee. I don't know who his parents were.
I don't have them on the 1860 or 1870 census yet, but in 1880 they were in Wright Co, MO along with her siblings.
William Hensley was born ca 1829/30 in Roane County, Tennessee. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30).
On 3 Oct 1849 William Hensley obtained a marriage bond in Roane County to marry Elizabeth Dennis. They were married on 4 Oct 1849. Elizabeth A. Dennis was born ca 1826/27 in Tennessee. She could be a sister (or somehow closely related) to Edward Dennis who married Nancy Hensley.
See their own page for additional information.
Marshall G. Hensley was born ca 1831/32 in Roane County, Tennessee. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35), and still home in 1850 ("Marshall G." age 18).
On 26 Feb 1856 "Marshall G. Hensley" married Jenny Caroline Black in Roane Co, TN. Caroline was born ca 1838/39 in Tennessee. I don't know who her parents are.
Marshall and family were listed on the 1860 census in Roane County next door to his parents.
