I (Marty Grant) am not related to John A. Hensley as far as I know.

John A. Hensley was born ca 1819/20 somewhere in Tennessee, probably Roane or perhaps Hawkins County.

John Hensley is a son of Benjamin Hensley (c1797) and Mary Gallion of Roane Co, TN. This is proven by two records, one, for the 1900 census, John was living with William Hensley (son of Benjamin) and listed as his brother. Two, John was listed on an 1859 deed selling land where Benjamin currently lived. He sold the land to his brothers William and Marshall.

John Hensley was probably home with his parents for the 1820 census, but that census was lost for Eastern Tennessee.

John did seem to be home with his parents for the 1830 census in Roane County, age 10-14 (born ca 1815/20).

John seems to have been home with his parents for the 1840 census in Roane County, age 20-29 (born ca 1810/20).

John Hensley married Permelia Cooley on 22 Jul 1849 in Meigs County, TN. (The Cooley family were neighbors to the Hensleys in Roane County also). Permelia was born ca 1818/19 in Virginia, county unknown. I don't know who her parents were. There were no Cooleys in 1840 Meigs Co, TN.  In 1850 Meigs, there was Robert Cooley (c1793 VA) and wife Mary (c1800 VA), who are probably Permelia's parents, or at least closely related.

Very shortly after marriage, John and Permelia moved from Meigs County, TN to nearby Bledsoe County, just west of Meigs County, on the other side of Rhea County.

John and Permelia were listed on the 1850 census in Bledsoe County in the Eastern District. The only other Hensley household in the county was that of Emily Hensley (c1811), though she was not listed nearby, but could be related.

I did not find John nor Permelia in Bledsoe Co, TN in 1860. I don't know where they moved to. I also did not find them in 1870.

By 1880, they had joined John's siblings in Wright County, Missouri and were listed there near them that year. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Permelia died in the 1880-1900 timeframe, presumably in Wright Co, MO.

John was listed on the 1900 census in Wright County, residing with his brother William and his family. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Children

John and Permelia had no children as of 1850. They may have had some after that date, but the 1880 census entry showed no children at home, but since I don't have them in 1860 or 1870, they could have had some children who were grown by 1880.
