Revision History:

James O. Hensley was born ca 1801/02 per his age on the 1850 census (48). He was born in Bedford Co., VA most likely.

He appears to be a son of Samuel Hensley and Sally Owen for he was named in the Will of James Owen as an heir. I don't have that record so I'm not sure what it says exactly. I think James is probably listed as a nephew.

James's father died ca 1808, and his mother remarried in 1809 to Russell Barrack in Bedford. Russell is listed on the 1810 census in neighboring Campbell Co., VA. They only had one apparent son with them and he was aged under 10 (born ca 1800/10) which fits James, but it also fits his two brothers Samuel and Willis. Therefore I'm not sure where James was in 1810 whether with his mother and step-father in Campbell Co., VA or with other relatives in Bedford.

Russell Barrack had moved to Warren Co., KY by the 1820 census. His household on that census had no sons that matched the age of his Hensley stepsons, and Mrs. Barrack is too young to be Sally Owen. It doesn't seem likely Sally would move to Kentucky leaving her young children from her first marriage in Virginia. That means that either this is a different man named Russell Barrack (what are the odds of that?) or more probably Sally Owen Hensley Barrack died and he remarried then moved away.

In Bedford County court James O. Hensley "being of full age for the purpose" made choice of David Owen to be his guardian. (Bedford Co., VA Court Records 1820-1823, Book 18, page 45, shared by Laura Schreibman.)

On 27 Nov 1820 James O. Hensley obtained a marriage bond in Bedford Co., VA to marry Nancy Turner. Admire Turner was bondsman. They were married on 7 Dec 1820 by John Ayers.

James O. Hensley would only have been about 18 when he married, so he would have needed his guardian's permission, but I didn't see it listed with the marriage record.

Nancy Turner was born ca 1801/02. I don't know who her parents were unless Admire Turner is her father. He was the bondsman for the marriage. He is old enough to be her father (born ca 1765/84 per his age on the 1820 census), but he could be an uncle instead.

In 1827 James Owen made his Will in Bedford Co., VA naming heirs James O. Hensley, Willis Hensley and Samuel Hensley (and others presumably). I haven't seen this Will so I don't know who else might have been named, or whether the Hensleys were James's grandchildren or nephews.

They are on the 1830 census in Bedford.

I don't know when James and Nancy died, though sometime after 1880.

Children of James O. Hensley and Nancy L. Turner. The 1850 through 1880 census records prove several children. The 1830 and 1840 census show a couple more. Daughter Narcissa is proven by her 1844 marriage bond.

There was an E. Hensley (c1842) (female) with the family in 1860 but she wasn't there in 1850. Is she a daughter too or perhaps the wife of one of the sons? On that same note there is an M. A. Hensley (c1837), female, with the family in 1860 also, but not there back in 1850. I don't know if "E." and "M.A." are James's children or not.
