Samuel Hensley was born before ca 1771. I base that on him
being bondsman for a marriage in 1792 and assuming he was at least 21
then. He was probably born in Bedford Co., VA. I don't know who his parents are for certain, but he may be a son of Samuel Hensley and Lilley Ann (---) who were in Bedford early on. On 24 Dec 1792 Samuel Hensley was bondsman for the Bedford County marriage bond for John Hensley and Mary Wade. John is probably his brother. On 23 Nov 1795 Samuel Hensley obtained a marriage bond in Bedford to marry Salley Owen, daughter of James and Elizabeth. James Hensley (his brother) was bondsman. They were married on 29 Nov 1795 by Jeremiah Hatcher. Sarah "Sally" Owen was born ca 1765/84 per her age on the 1810 census. She is a daughter of James Owen and Elizabeth (---) as proven by her marriage bond. The 1800 census is lost for Virginia, but the 1800 tax list for Bedford shows several Hensleys in the county. Each of these would be over 16 at this time: Benjamin, William, James, Samuel, John and Lelean. "Lelean" or Lilley Ann as she is shown in other records is probably the widow of Samuel Hensley (Sr) and the parents of all the Hensleys listed on the 1800 tax list in Bedford. Samuel's entry on the tax list shows one white male over 16 (himself) and 1 horse. Samuel Hensley died in Bedford Co., VA sometime before 1808. His estate is mentioned in court records that year. I don't have those records yet but I know they exist. On 27 Nov 1809 Sally Hensley married Russel Barrick in Bedford Co., VA. James Owen was bondsman. This is Samuel's widow remarrying. James Owen is her father (or a brother of the same name). Russell Barrack (various spellings) was born ca 1775/84. I don't know who his parents were. They are listed on the 1810 census in neighboring Campbell Co., VA. It does not appear that any of Sarah's Hensley children are in the household with them, though one may be there, or that might be a child from the new marriage. 1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1810 Campbell Co., VA page 878 Russell Barrack 10010-00010-0-2 Analysis: 1 Male 26-44 (1765/1784) Russell Barrack (1775/84) 1 male 0-9 (1800/1810) Son? (or Hensley step-son) 1 Female 26-44 (1765/1784) Sarah Owen Hensley Barrack (1765/84) wife 2 Slaves It looks as though Sarah Owen Hensley Barrack died sometime after 1810 possibly in Campbell Co., VA. Russell Barrack was found on the 1820 census in Warren Co., KY and he had no one Sally's age living with him. His apparent wife on that census was aged 16-25 or born ca 1794/1804. That must be a second wife. |
| Children of Samuel Hensley and Sarah Owen. The 1827 Will of James Owen in Bedford Co., VA names James, Willis and Samuel Hensley as his heirs. I haven't seen this Will yet so I don't know if this is their grandfather James Owen, or an uncle of the same name. Another child (Margaret) is proven by her marriage bond (1816) wherein she has the consent of James Owen to marry. There could be other children, but I haven't seen any evidence for them yet. |

Margaret Hensley was born sometime
between 1795 and 1808 in Bedford Co., VA.
On 14 Oct 1816 Hillary Hatcher obtained a marriage bond in Bedford to marry Margaret Hensley. Julius W. Hatcher was bondsman. James Owen, Administrator, gave his consent for Margaret to marry and Jacob White, guardian to Hillary Hatcher gave his consent. That says both bride and groom were under 21. They were married on 16 Oct 1816 by Enoch W. Terry. I wasn't able to find them on the 1820, 1830, 1840 or 1850 census. "Hillary" could be Mr. Hatcher's middle name and not the name he used on most records. That could explain why I wasn't able to find him anywhere after his marriage. On the other hand perhaps he died soon after the marriage and Margaret remarried or died as well. |
