Samuel Hensley was probably born in the 1740's or earlier. I
can't be more precise because I don't have enough early records to
base it on. Some of his oldest known children were born in the 1760's,
so he must have been at least in his early 20's then, thus the ca
1740's birth. I don't know who his parents are. No clue really. Bedford County was formed in 1753 (effective 1754) from Albemarle and Lunenburg. I don't know when Samuel Hensley arrived in Bedford or if he already lived there when the county was formed. Samuel Hensley probably married Lilley Ann (---) sometime before ca 1763 (birth year of son James). The marriage may have been in Bedford Co., VA. I don't know when she was born, nor what her maiden name is. I also don't know for certain that Samuel was Lilley's husband. He was the only older Hensley in Bedford in the 1780's, and she was a widow by 1791, so it fits, but I have no direct evidence that he was her husband. Samuel Hensley is listed on the 1782 tax list for Bedford with one taxable white male (himself). Samuel Hensley is listed on the 1787 tax list in Bedford Co., VA. He has 2 taxable white males between the ages of 16 and 21, seven horses, 14 head of cattle and no slaves. Samuel Hensley is on the 1789 tax list in Bedford (the only Hensley in the county). He has three white males over 21 (born before 1768). That would be himself and two sons, and he has one white male between 16 and 21 (born ca 1768/1773) and 8 horses. He had no slaves. Samuel died sometime between 1789 and 1791 for on 11 Aug 1791 one his daughters married and Lilley Ann gave her consent. Samuel wasn't mentioned. That was the marriage of John Sled and Milley Hensley. James Hensley was bondsman. "Lillay" Hensley gave her consent. The 1800 census is lost for Virginia, but the 1800 tax list for Bedford shows several Hensleys in the county. Each of these would be over 16 at this time: Benjamin, William, James, Samuel, John and Lelean. "Lelean" or Lilley Ann had no white males over 16, and two horses. On 25 Oct 1802 Gilliam King obtained a marriage bond to marry Nancy Hensley daughter of Lilley Ann. Benjamin Hensley was bondsman. That is the last record I have for Lilley Ann. |
Children of Samuel Hensley and Lilley Ann (---). Bedford County marriage bonds prove that Lilley Ann is the mother of Nancy Hensley and Milly Hensley. James, John, Samuel, Benjamin and William Hensley were all associated with each other and with Lilley Ann's proven daughters, so it is reasonable to conclude they are all her children or at least very closely related. |
James Hensley was born ca 1762/63 per his age on his 1849 death record (86). James was associated with Lilley Ann and Milly in 1791; Samuel (Jr) in 1795, and he named one of his sons Samuel. That all proves a close connection. See his own page for more information. |
John Hensley was born before 1771. He was associated with Samuel Hensley (Jr) in 1793. I have very little else on John, but it seems very likely he is a son of Samuel and Lilley Ann. See his own page for more information. |
Samuel Hensley was born before 1771. He was associated with John in 1792, and James in 1795. It seems very likely he is a son of Samuel and Lilley Ann. See his own page for other information. |
Benjamin Hensley was born ca 1765/70. He was associated with Nancy and Lilley Ann in 1802 and with William in 1829. See his own page for other information. |
Nancy Hensley was born ca 1765/75 in
Bedford Co., VA. She is a proven child of Lilley Ann per her marriage
bond. On 25 Oct 1802 Gilliam King obtained a marriage bond in Bedford to marry Nancy Hensley daughter of Lilley Ann. Benjamin Hensley (brother) was bondsman. They were married on 15 Nov 1802 by Jeremiah Hatcher. They are listed on the 1810 census in Bedford. 1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1810 Bedford Co., VA page 470 Gilliam King 00010-01010-0-2 Analysis: 1 Male 26-44 (1765/1784) Gilliam King 1 Female 26-44 (1765/1784) Nancy Hensley King (1765/75) 1 female 10-15 (1794/1800) Daughter? 2 Slaves They are still in Bedford for the 1820 census. 1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1820 Bedford Co., VA page 43 Gilliam King 011101-00101 Slaves=00100-1000 Analysis: 1 Male 45+ (bef 1775) Gilliam King (1765/75) 1 male 16-25 (1794/1804) Son? 1 male 16-17 (1802/1804) * 1 male 10-15 (1804/1810) Son? 1 Female 45+ (bef 1775) Nancy Hensley King (1765/75) 1 female 16-25 (1794/1804) Daughter? 2 Slaves Nancy Hensley King must have died before 1822 for on 7 Nov 1822 Gilliam King married Nancy Lane Tucker Ownsley. Gilliam King died 9 Jan 1830 per Jesse Tucker's Revolutionary War Pension File. |
William Hensley was born ca 1774/75. He was associated with Benjamin in 1829. See his own page for other information. |
Milly Hensley was born ca 1775/84 in
Bedford Co., VA. She is a proven child of Lilley Ann per her marriage
bond. On 9 Jul 1791 John Sled obtained a marriage bond in Bedford Co., VA to marry Milley Hensley. James Hensley (her brother) was bondsman. Lillay Hensley gave her consent. They were married 11 Aug 1791 by William Dameron. John Sled is listed on the 1800 tax list in Bedford. He has one white tithe (himself) and two horses. I didn't find him on the 1810 census in Bedford. There is a John Sled in neighboring Amherst Co., VA that could be the same one except that they are both listed as age 45 and up, or born before 1765. That doesn't work for Milly for she wasn't that old. There is a John Sledge in 1810 Bedford. Could that be the same person? Perhaps. 1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1810 Bedford Co., VA page 481 John Sledge 21001-11010-0-8 Analysis: 1 Male 45+ (bef 1765) John Sled (bef 1765) 1 males 10-15 (1794/1800) Son? (1800/04) 10 Slaves I didn't find them on the 1830 census. I found a John Sledd in neighboring Campbell Co., VA in 1830, but he is too young to be the same person. Bedford County Marriage records prove several of John and Milly's children. |
