William Hensley was born ca 1774/75 per his age on the 1850
census (75). He was born in Virginia, presumably in Bedford County
where he lived his adult life. I don't know who his parents are for certain, but he may be a son of Samuel Hensley and Lilley Ann (---) who were in Bedford early on. The 1787 tax list for Bedford Co., VA shows only two Hensleys there at the time: Samuel Hensley and James Hensley. Assuming that William was born and raised in Bedford, one of those two is probably his father. James is almost certainly a son of Samuel and he isn't quite old enough to be William's father, so that leaves Samuel as the prime suspect to be William's father. Of course this isn't conclusive but interesting. The 1790 census is lost for Virginia. William would have been about 15 at that time so wouldn't have been listed by name anyway. The 1800 census is also lost. The 1800 tax list for Bedford shows several Hensleys in the county. Each of these would be over 16 at this time: Benjamin, William, James, Samuel, John and Lelean. "Lelean" or Lilley Ann as she is shown in other records is probably the widow of Samuel Hensley and the parents of all the Hensleys listed on the 1800 tax list in Bedford. William's entry on the tax list shows one white male over 16 (himself) and 1 horse. On 17 Jul 1800 William Hensley obtained a marriage bond in Bedford Co., VA to marry Sally Eubank daughter of Amrbose. John King was bondsman. They were married 21 Jul 1802 by Jeremiah Hatcher. Sarah "Sally" Eubank(s) was born ca 1784/85 per her age on the 1850 census (65), a daughter of Ambrose Eubank as shown on her marriage bond. I don't know her mother's name. William Hensley is listed on the 1810 census in Bedford Co., VA. His probable brother Benjamin Hensley is also listed, the only other Hensley on the census. The older female in the house could be William's widowed mother Lilley Ann if she was still alive then, or perhaps Sarah's mother. His probable brother Benjamin was still there, but no sign of William. The only William in all of Virginia that year was in Albemarle Co., VA a few counties north of Bedford. Is that him? It could be, but I don't think so. William was probably still in Bedford in 1820 but just left off the census for some reason, or else he is there and I just didn't find him. They were "back" in Bedford for the 1830 census. Kitty F. Hensley was born ca 1800/10 per census analysis. She
was probably born ca 1808 or 1809 since she needed parental consent
for her 1829 marriage, showing she was under 21 then.
She seems to be with her parents for the 1810 census aged under 10 (1800/10). I haven't found her parents in 1820. On 20 May 1829 Ulysses Hatcher obtained a marriage bond in Bedford Co., VA to marry Kitty F. Hensley daughter of William. Benjamin Hensley (her uncle) was bondsman. Ulysses Hatcher had been previously married to Margaret Hensley (daughter of James). They are on the 1830 census near her parents and several other Hatchers. There were four Hensleys on the 1830 census in Bedford who were in the 20-29 age group (born ca 1800/10). They are: Henry Hensley (c1799); John L. Hensley (c1803); Willis Hensley (c1805) and James O. Hensley (c1802). Of those Henry is a proven son of James, and Willis and James O. are proven sons of Samuel. That leaves John L. Hensley as a prime suspect. He even named his two oldest children William and Sarah, so that fits really well. It isn't solid proof though, but it fits. |

Nancy B. Hensley was born ca 1817/18 in
Bedford Co., VA. She was apparently home with her parents for the 1830
census age 10-14 (1815/20). On 23 Jan 1835 Granville Tucker obtained a marriage bond in Bedford to marry Nancy B. Hensley, daughter of William. Willis Hensley was bondsman. He is either Nancy's 1st cousin. Nancy King gave her consent for the marriage (see below). They were married on 11 Feb 1835 by William Harris. B. Granville Tucker was born 16 Mar 1815 in Virginia. He is a son of Jesse Tucker and Nancy Lane (who married 2nd to Powell Ownsley and 3rd to Gilliam King, see Jesse Tucker's Revolutionary War Pension File). her age on the 1850 census (20). She doesn't seem to be with her
parents for the 1840 or 1830 census. That could mean she is a
grandchild instead or that her age is wrong in 1850. There is a
daughter born ca 1815/20 or 1820/25 (or averaged out to ca 1820) who
was with the family in 1830 and 1840. That could be Frances. She is with William and Sarah in 1850 ("Frances" age 20). I didn't find her in 1860. She may have married or died by then. |
