James Hensley was born ca 1762/63 per his age on the 1850 census mortality schedule. He was presumably born in Bedford Co., VA where he lived later on before moving to neighboring Botetourt.

James is almost certainly a son of Samuel Hensley and Lilley Ann (---) who were in Bedford early on. I've seen no absolute proof of this relationship, but it seems likely for they were associated and there aren't any other options for who James' parents might be.

James Hensley is listed on the 1787 tax list for Bedford Co., VA. His father Samuel was the only other Hensley lsited.

The 1790 census is lost for Virginia.

On 9 Jul 1791 James Hensley was bondsman for the marriage of (his sister) Milley Hensley to John Sled in Bedford Co., VA. That marriage bond showed that Lillay Hensley (her mother) consented to the marriage.

On 23 Nov 1795 James Hensley was bondsman for the marriage of (his brother) Samuel Hensley to Sally Owen in Bedford Co., VA.

On 5 Dec 1796 James Hensley obtained a marriage bond in Bedford Co., VA to marry Salley Hatcher, daughter of Henry and Ann. They were married on 15 Dec 1796 by Jeremiah Hatcher.

Sarah Ann Hatcher was born ca 1776/77 per her age on the 1850 census (73). Her parents are Henry Hatcher and Ann (---) as shown on her marriage record.

The 1800 census is lost for Virginia, but the 1800 tax list for Bedford shows several Hensleys in the county. Each of these would be over 16 at this time: Benjamin, William, James, Samuel, John and Lelean. "Lelean" or Lilley Ann as she is shown in other records is probably the widow of Samuel Hensley and the parents of all the Hensleys listed on this tax list. James's entry on the tax list shows one white male over 16 (himself) and 1 horse.

James Hensley may be listed on the 1810 census in Bedford Co., VA. I say "may" because the surname is partly obscured but it appears to say "Hensley" but I could be mistaken. He isn't listed near any other Hensleys.

Sarah is listed as head of household on the 1850 census. Her son Jeremiah and his wife Susan are living with her.

I wasn't able to find Sarah on the 1860 census. She may have died before then.

Children of James Hensley and Sarah Ann Hatcher. The 1810 through 1850 census shows several children. James and Sarah made a deed on 24 Aug 1823 that proves that Henry Franklin Hensley and Samuel Hensley are their sons (shared by Laura Schreibman, no book or page reference). Another deed dated 6 Mar 1826 proves Henry again, as well as a daughter Margaret. A deed dated 8 Aug 1828 proves that Samuel Hensley was their son and that he died without wife or heirs. A deed dated 25 Nov 1829 proves a daughter Polly Tolly and names her children; it also names children Henry F. Hensley, Jeremiah Hensley, Amanda Hensley.

Those records don't seem to proven all the children that are listed on the earlier census records.

Henry F. Hensley was born ca 1798/99 per his age on the 1850 census. He is a proven son of James and Sarah Ann as named in several deeds in the 1820's.

He married Susan L. Tucker in 1824. See their page for more on them.

Samuel Hensley was born ca 1794/1804, presumably in Bedford Co., VA. He is a proven son of James and Sarah Ann as named in several deeds in the 1820's.

He seems to be with his parents in 1810 aged under 10 (c1800/10) and home in 1820 aged 16-25 (c1794/1804).

He died unmarried between 1824 and 1828 in Botetourt Co., VA.

Unknown Son (1800/1804). James Hensley had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1810 aged under 10 (c1800/10), and home in 1820 aged 16-25 (1794/1804) and still home in 1830 aged 20-29 (1800/10).

I don't know who this might be.

Mary "Polly" Hensley was born ca 1800/10 in Bedford Co., VA. She was home with her parents in 1810 aged under 10 (c1800/10).

On 12 Aug 1816 Christopher Tolley obtained a marriage bond in Bedford Co., VA to marry Polly Hensley. James Hensley was bondsman. They were married on 14 Aug 1816 by Enoch W. Terry.

There were three men named Christopher Tolly on the 1820 census in the area, and two in 1830 (both in Rockbridge).

An 1829 deed from her father James seems to indicate that Mary had died before then for he named her children as heirs.

Margaret Hensley was born ca 1800/04 in Bedford Co., VA. She was home with her parents in 1810 aged under 10 (c1800/10) and still home in 1820 age 16-25 (c1794/1804).

On 10 Sep 1827 Ulysses Hatcher obtained a marriage bond in Botetourt Co., VA to marry Margaret Hensley, daughter of James. They were married on 20 Sep 1827.

Margaret must have died between 1827 and 1829 for on 20 May 1829 Ulysses Hatcher married her 1st cousin Kitty F. Hensley daughter of William Hensley.

Jeremiah Hensley was born ca 1805/06 per his age on the 1850 census (44). He was home with his parents in 1810 aged under 10 (c1800/10) and still home in 1820 age 10-15 (c1804/10), and still home in 1830 aged 20-29 (1800/10).

On 12 Sep 1837 Jeremiah Hensley obtained a marriage bond in Botetourt Co., VA to marry Susannah Collins. James Hensley was bondsman. They were married on 14 Sep 1837 by Absalom C. Dempsey.

They weren't listed on the 1840 census as far as I could find. It appears they were living with his parents in Botetourt that year.

They were with Jeremiah's widowed mother in 1850 in Botetourt.

They moved a couple of counties east to Campbell Co., VA where they were listed on the 1860 census with another family, relationship unknown.

It appears that Susannah Collins Hensley died in the 1860's in Campbell Co., VA.

Jeremiah Hensley married Martha (---) sometime before ca 1865 in Campbell. She was born ca 1839/40 in Virginia. I don't know her maiden name.

They are on the 1870 census in Campbell Co., VA.

Jeremiah Hensley and wife Martha both appear to have died in the 1870's in Campbell Co., VA. I found their son James living with a Moorman family listed as a servant, and daughter Elizabeth living with a Morris family, listed as a niece. I didn't find the child listed as an infant in 1870 in Campbell in 1880.

Amanda Hensley was born ca 1804/10 in Bedford Co., VA. She was home with her parents in 1810 aged under 10 (c1800/10) and still home in 1820 age 10-15 (c1804/10), and still home in 1830 aged 20-29 (1800/10).

On 27 Mar 1832 Jordan Steed obtained a marriage bond in Botetourt Co., VA to marry Amanda Hensley, daughter of James. James S. Wood was bondsman. They were married on 27 Apr 1832 by Absalom C. Dempsey.

I wasn't able to find them on the 1840 or 1850 census anywhere.
