Joel F. Hensley was born ca 1818/19 per his age on the 1850
census (31). He was born in Virginia, presumably in Bedford County
where he lived later on. I don't know who his parents are for certain, but he was living next to William Hensley (c1775) and Sarah Eubank in 1850. They are probably his parents, but I don't have absolute proof. By the 1820 census Joel would have been about one year old. He should be in the under 10 age group (born 1810/20). I wasn't able to find William Hensley, Joel's probable father, on the 1820 census in Bedford. By the 1830 census Joel would have been around 11 years old. William was in Bedford that year and he did have one apparent son aged 10-14 (born 1815/20). I don't know if this is Joel or not, but could be. In 1840 Joel would have been about 21 years old. William was listed in Bedford and had one apparent son aged 20-29 (born ca 1810/20). That could be Joel. On 6 Feb 1840 Joel F. Hensley obtained a marriage bond in Bedford Co., VA to marry Luveney E. Worley, daughter of Henry. William Worley was bondsman. They were married on 13 Feb 1840 by William Harris. They are on the 1850 census in Bedford Co., VA next door to his probable parents. His name is clearly listed as "Jno" which is short for John. Other records give his name as Joel, so I'm not sure why he is listed as John here.
They are still in Bedford for the 1860 census, though not near any other Hensleys.
They are still in Bedford for the 1870 census. He is listed as "Joseph" this time, which is a name sometimes used interchangeably with "Joel."
They are still in Bedford on the 1880 census.
I don't know when Joel and Lavinia died, though obviously sometime after 1880. |
