I (Marty Grant) am not related to Jeremiah Hensley as far as I know.

Jeremiah Hensley was born ca 1792/93 (per 1850 and 1860 census) in North Carolina, county unknown. It is quite possible (and very likely) that he was from Buncombe, now Yancey County, but that isn't proven, just speculation.

I don't know who Jeremiah's parents were, but it is possible that he was a brother to Charles Hensley (c1792/93), also born in NC. They both lived in White Co, TN at the same time, and Jeremiah named one of his sons "Charles". This does not prove they are siblings, but it is of interest and suggests a relationship.

Jeremiah would have been home with his parents for the 1800 and 1810 census, but since I don't know if he was still in North Carolina then, or in Tennessee already, it will be hard to pin down suspected parents for him.

By 1817, Jeremiah was in Greene County, Tennessee, for on 19 Mar 1817 he obtained a marriage bond to marry Elizabeth Welty. The marriage record shows they married on the 10th, but that is before the bond date, so one of these is probably in error. Elizabeth was born ca 1790/91 in Virginia, county unknown. I don't know who her parents were.

They were probably somewhere in Eastern Tennessee (possibly Greene County) for the 1820 census, but unfortunately, the 1820 census is lost for all of the eastern part of the state.

By the time of the 1830 census, Jeremiah had moved west to White County, Tennessee. Charles Hensley (c1793) was also listed there that year, but not close by.

In the 1840's, Jeremiah and family moved even further west into Hardeman County, Tennessee, which borders Tippah County, Mississippi (where he later moved). For the 1840 census, Jeremiah's family was the only Hensleys listed in Hardeman County.

At some point in the 1840's, Jeremiah and family moved across the border into Tippah County, Mississippi. They were listed in that county for the 1850 census next door to probable son Martin Hensley. Elizabeth White (c1836) was residing with them. She could be a granddaughter. A W. White (male) (c1830) was residing with Jeremiah's probable son George a few houses away. I'm not sure how they are all related.

Elizabeth Welty Hensley died sometime between 1850 and 1860 in Tippah Co, MS.

Jeremiah was listed on the 1860 census in Tippah County living with son Alfred and his family. He was listed as a Shoe Maker.

I have no data on Jeremiah after 1860.

Children

Jeremiah and Elizabeth had several children per the various census records. Some are not identified yet.

Unknown Son (1815/20)

Willis Hensley (c1820)

Martin Hensley (c1821)

George W. Hensley (c1823)

Alfred A. Hensley (c1827)

Margaret Hensley (c1832)

William Hensley (c1834)

Charles Hensley (c1836)

James Hensley (c1836)

Unknown Son (1815/20). Jeremiah Hensley had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1830 (age 10-14), but gone by 1840, so probably married or dead by then.

I have no clue who this might have been.

Willis Hensley was born ca 1819/20 in Tennessee, presumably in Greene County. I don't have solid proof that he was Jeremiah's son, but it seems very likely. He was apparently home with parents for the 1830 census (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20) and still home in 1840 (age 20-29, born ca 1810/20).

Willis Hensley married Elizabeth --- between 1840 and ca 1843, probably in Hardeman County, Tennessee (no marriage record found). Elizabeth was born ca 1821/22 in North Carolina. I don't know her maiden name.

Willis and wife remained in Tennessee until moving to Tippah County, Mississippi between ca 1845 and ca 1847 (based on birth places and dates for their children).

They were listed in Tippah Co, MS for the 1850 census just a few houses from his parents and from siblings George and Martin.

They were still in Tippah County for the 1860 census, and had several extra people with them, including a new son-in-law and several others, relationship unknown. Nephew Samuel Hensley (c1850) was also with them. He was son of brother Martin Hensley who may have died before 1860.

** I don't have them in 1870 yet.

Elizabeth apparently died before 1880, for on that census, Willis had a new wife: Lovey S. ---, born ca 1840/41 in North Carolina. I don't know her maiden name, nor when they were married (other than sometime before 1880).

Willis and wife were on the 1880 census in Tippah County, in Sand Hill Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Martin Hensley was born ca 1820/21 in Tennessee, presumably in Greene County. I don't have solid proof that he was Jeremiah's son, but it seems very likely. He was in Hardeman Co, TN and Tippah Co, MS when Jeremiah was in both places, and he lived near Jeremiah, and Jeremiah did have an apparent son this age, so it all fits.

He was apparently home with parents for the 1830 census (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25) and still home in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25).

On 22 Jan 1846 Martin Hensley obtained a marriage bond in Hardeman Co, TN to marry Rachel M. C. Thrasher. They married the next day (23 Jan 1846). Rachel was born ca 1830/31 in Tennessee, daughter of John C. Thrasher (c1800 GA) (who was living with them in 1850).

They moved to Tippah Co, MS before 1850 and were listed there on that census next door to his parents. John Thrasher was living with them, and he was presumably Rachel's father.

I did not find Martin and family after 1850. For the 1860 census their son Samuel was residing with his Uncle Willis Hensley. I suspect this could mean that both Martin and Rachel died prior to 1860.

George W. Hensley was born ca 1822/23 in Tennessee, presumably in Greene County.

On 7 Jun 1843 George W. Hensley obtained a marriage bond in Hardeman Co, TN to marry Margaret Crawford. They married on 13 Jun 1843. Margaret was born ca 1822/23 in Tennessee. I don't know who her parents were.

They moved to Tippah Co, MS before 1847 and were listed there on that census a few houses from his parents. A "W. White" age 20 was with them, and brother Alfred Hensley was with them also (and also listed with his parents). A James Hensley age 14 (born ca 1835/36) was living with them. I don't know if he was a younger brother, or a nephew or what.

They were still in Hardeman in 1870. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Margaret Crawford Hensley died sometime between 1870 and 1880, presumably in Hardeman Co, TN.

George Hensley married Lavicey --- before 1880, probably in Hardeman County. I don't know her maiden name, but she may have been married twice before, for the 1880 census shows two step-sons with the family, both with different surnames. One was Lettrell the younger one Box

The 1880 census record shows the family in District 10 of Hardeman County. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Alfred A. Hensley was born ca 1826/27 in Tennessee, either in Greene or White County. He was apparently home with parents for the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30) and still home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30), and still home in 1850 ("Alfred A." age 23), and apparently also living with brother George in 1850 ("Alfred" age 28), unless that was a different Alfred with George (and I doubt that).

Alfred married Minerva --- between 1850 and ca 1854 in Tippah Co, MS. She was born ca 1828/29 in North Carolina. I don't know her maiden name.

They were listed in Tippah Co, MS for the 1860 census, with Alfred's widowed father residing with them.

** I don't have them in 1870 yet, but they were probably still in Tippah County.

For the 1880 census, they were in Tippah County, in Sand Hill Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Margaret Hensley was born ca 1831/32 in Tennessee, probably in White County. She was apparently home with parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35) and still home in 1850 ("Margaret" age 18).

She was not found in 1860, so probably married by then.

William Hensley was born ca 1833/34 in Tennessee, probably in White County. He was apparently home with parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35) and still home in 1850 ("William" age 16).

William Hensley married Louisa --- between 1850 and ca 1855 in Tippah Co, MS. Louisa was born ca 1833/34 in North Carolina. I don't know her maiden name.

They were listed on the 1860 census next to his father.

I have no record of them after 1860.

Charles Hensley was born ca 1835/36 in Tennessee, possibly in White County or perhaps in Hardeman County. He was apparently home with parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35) and still home in 1850 ("Charles" age 14).

I have no record of Charles after 1850.

James Hensley was born ca 1835/36 in Tennessee, possibly in White County or perhaps in Hardeman County. I don't know if he is a son of Jeremiah or not. I kind of doubt it, but he was living with George Hensley in 1850, listed after George's own children. Jeremiah had no "extra" sons this age with him in 1840, so it is quite possible that James was a nephew of Jeremiah instead, though I can't be sure.

I have no record of James after 1850.
