I (Marty Grant) am not related to John Hensley as far as I know.

John Hensley was born ca 1770/80 (per 1830 census) or ca 1780/90 (per 1840 census). These can be reconciled if he was born ca 1780. I don't know where he was born, though he lived in western Tennessee later on, but probably not born there. He lived in a part of Tennessee heavily populated by North Carolinians, so he might also be from North Carolina.

I know very little about John . He is found on the 1820, 1830 and 1840 census in western Tennessee, and, frankly those are the only records I have on him so far. He could be associated with the Lemuel Hensley (1780/90) family, as they lived in the same county in 1830.

I don't know who John's parents were. It is possible that his mother was Lydia Hensley (bef 1775), but that is far from proven and just speculation on my part.

John would have probably been home with his parents for the 1790 and 1800 census, but assuming he was in Tennessee then, those records are lost.

John Hensley married someone (name unknown) before ca 1815, but I don't know if in Tennessee, or some other state. His wife was born ca 1794/1800 (per the 1820, 1830 and 1840 census).

John Hensley was listed on the 1820 census in Wayne Co, TN. He was next door to Lydia Hensley (bef 1775) (an apparent widow) and next to Isaac Burkley. There were several other Hensleys in Wayne County that year, most from the Hickman Hensley (1759) family formerly of Western North Carolina. I don't know if it is significant (geographically), but in both 1820 and 1830, John's family was enumerated on the next to the last page of the Wayne County census.

In 1830 John Hensley was still in Wayne County, and once again on the next to last page. He was listed between John Dabbs and Charles Burns. A James Henley (c1800/10) was just a few houses away which might be a misspelled "Hensley", but maybe not.

John was not found in Wayne County in 1840. However, a John Hensley was found in neighboring Perry County in 1840, and his household is an excellent match, so I'm convinced it is the same person. He was a few pages from Joel Hensley (c1813), who could be his son. He was listed between David Pounds and S. E. Shumaker.

I did not find John Hensley on the 1850 census in Perry County, Tennessee, nor elsewhere. Decatur County was cut off from Perry in 1845, but John's family was not found in Decatur in 1850 either (though Joel Hensley was in Decatur that year).

Children

I have no data on any of John's apparent children. I may have a match on one of them, but it is just speculation.

Unknown Son (1810/15). John Hensley had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and still home in 1830 (age 15-19, born ca 1810/15), but gone by 1840, so probably married or dead by then.

This could be Joel Hensley (c1813) who appeared in Perry Co, TN in 1840 (as did John). He fits age-wise and location-wise, but I have no other data connecting them.
