Hickman Hensley (1759) and Agness Fisher and Elizabeth Rentfrow of Burke, Buncombe and Yancey Co, NC and Central TN

Hickman Hensley was born 15 Apr 1759, presumably in Virginia (possibly Halifax County where his parents seemed to be in 1759). His birth date is recorded in Hickman Hensley and Elizabeth Rentfrow's Family Bible. (Thanks to Dale Donnel and Jerry R. Hensley for sharing that with me).

The same Bible record shows Hickman Hensley to be a son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Hensley. The Bible was published in 1815 and, according to the inscription, was purchased by Hickman Hensley from Patsey Ambron for one dollar. Unfortunately, the Bible (though extremely useful) does not contain any data about Hickman's first family, but only about his second family.

Hickman Hensley was a son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Hensley (as proven by his family bible). He was probably named after his paternal grandmother Elizabeth Hickman who married Benjamin Hensley in 1730. This Benjamin and Elizabeth were probably the parents of Benjamin Hensley (c1730). That connection isn't proven, but it seems likely.

Hickman was probably born in Virginia, however, there may be some evidence that the family was in Bucks Co, PA at that timeframe. I'm not sure of this, so I'll just mention it as a possibility. He may have been in either Hanover or Halifax Co, VA, with Hanover seeming more likely. The problem with narrowing it down is that there were several Benjamin Hensleys (more than one with a wife named "Elizabeth") in Virginia in the ca 1759 timeframe. It is very difficult to sort them out.

Hickman came into what is now Surry Co, NC with his parents prior to 1768. His father Benjamin was listed on the 1768 tax list in Rowan Co, NC. This part of Rowan County was cut off to form Surry County in 1771. The family was still there in Surry Co, NC until after 1774. By 1778 most of this family was in Henry Co, VA which bordered Surry Co, NC.

Hickman Hensley married Agness Fisher sometime prior to 1778, in Surry Co, NC. Agness was a daughter of James Fisher. Agness' brother Thomas Fisher made his Will on 15 Jul 1778 in Surry Co, NC. In his Will he mentioned his father James, and his sisters Elizabeth Rentfrow, Sarah Coxe and Agness Hensley. His Will was witnessed by Benjamin Henslee (spelled that way). I don't know which Benjamin this was, whether Hickman's father, or Hickman's brother Benjamin. The Will proves that Agness Fisher married someone named Hensley, but doesn't prove it was Hickman. However, the family Bible record of Hickman's son Larkin Hensley lists his parents as "Hickman and Agness".

Hickman Hensley was listed on the 1778 Militia List (or tax list) for Henry Co, VA.

Hickman Hensley and other Hensleys were members of Captain Jonathan Hamby's Company for the Revolutionary War, and served at the Battle of Guilford Court House. Hickman's name was on a March 1781 Muster Roll in that company, as was his brother Henry Hensley and brother (or father) Benjamin Hensley.

After the war, Hickman moved (briefly) to Washington Co, VA, where many Hensleys were living at that time. He was listed on the 1784 tax list in that county. He was in Alexander Barnett's District along with Charles Hensley (probably his Uncle). Hicman Hensley had 1 tithe, 2 horses, 2 cattle and no slaves. This was the section of Washington Co., VA that became Russell Co., VA in 1786. All the other Hensleys (except Charles) lived fairly far from that region.

About that same year (1784), or perhaps in early 1785, Hickman joined his siblings in what is now Yancey and Madison County, North Carolina, but was then still part of Burke County.

The 1787 State Census for Burke County, NC shows four Hensley households listed, however, the edge of the pages were damaged, so none of the given names survived, so I can't really tell which was which. However, one of these was certainly Hickman Hensley. The other three were probably Henry, James and Benjamin Hensley. The listing that seems to fit best for Hickman is given below, but keep in mind this might be one of the others.

Hickman Hensley was listed on the 1790 census in Burke Co, NC with a large family. He was in the 12th company, with his brothers James, John and Henry not far away. The published version of this census lists him as "Hirman" Hensly, though it should say "Hickman". Hickman was listed between George Baker and James Bennett.

In 1791, Buncombe County was created from the section of Burke County where Hickman Hensley and family resided.

In April 1792, Henry Hensley, Hickman Hensley and others were ordered to be on a jury to lay off a road from Waggon Ford of Rime Creek to Turkey Cove to Robert Hintons on Lindseys Creek of Cove River. (Buncombe Co, NC Court Minutes, published in Old Buncombe Co, NC Genealogical Society Journal).

In July 1792, Hickman Hensley and others were ordered to appear in next court (Oct 1792) as jurors. (Buncombe Co, NC Court Minutes, published in Old Buncombe Co, NC Genealogical Society Journal).

In Oct 1792, Hickman Hensley and others were listed as Grand Jurors in Buncombe County Court. (Buncombe Co, NC Court Minutes, published in Old Buncombe Co, NC Genealogical Society Journal).

In Jan 1793, Hickman Hensley and William Wilson came into Court and took the Oath of Justice of the Peace and became Justices for Buncombe County. (Buncombe Co, NC Court Minutes, published in Old Buncombe Co, NC Genealogical Society Journal).

Around this time, an interesting event happened: Elizabeth Rentfrow (a niece of Agness Fisher Hensley) gave birth to a child (on 29 Jan 1794), who's father was Hickman Hensley. She and Hickman would eventually have nine children together (the last in 1815). I can't help but wonder what Agness Fisher Hensley had to say about this. The fact of these children (who all kept their mother's name "Rentfrow") being Hickman's children is well proven, both by his family bible and other documents. The fact that they did not marry would seem to show that Agness was still alive. Some have suggested that she died, and Hickman married Elizabeth as a second wife, but if that were true, the children would have the Hensley surname.

Elizabeth Rentfrow was born 16 Aug 1774, in Virginia, and was a daughter of John Rentfrow and Elizabeth Fisher (sister to Agness Fisher Hensley). Elizabeth Rentfrow's father John Rentfrow was listed on the 1790 census next door to Henry Hensley, and just a few houses from Hickman Hensley.

In Jan 1794, Hickman Hensley was listed as Justice presiding over court. (Buncombe Co, NC Court Minutes, published in Old Buncombe Co, NC Genealogical Society Journal).

In Jul 1794, Hickman Hensley was listed a Justice presiding over court. (Buncombe Co, NC Court Minutes, published in Old Buncombe Co, NC Genealogical Society Journal).

Hickman Hensley apparently made an excursion into central or west TN by 1797 for he was listed on a report of Whites in Indian country made that year. He was listed as "Hickman Henslee", his occupation was "Hireling and Idler". (I can't find the source for this at the moment). However, he didn't stay long, for he was back in Buncombe Co, NC by 1800.

The 1800 census of Buncombe Co, NC shows Hickman Hensley in Buncombe Co, NC. This census was alphabetical, so we can't determine who Hickman's neighbors were at this time. It would appear (but can't be confirmed) that he and Agness were still together, even though by this time he and Elizabeth Rentfrow had 3 children together. Hickman's household in 1800 contained unknown children who are good match for the ages of those Rentfrow children, but I can't say if they were with him or not. My belief is that Elizabeth and her children were living with Hickman. I base this on the fact that Elizabeth's father John Rentfrow was listed on the 1800 census, but he had no one Elizabeth's age residing with him. Hickman did have someone her age, as well as the age of their Rentfrow children, so it all fits.

Although the information about Hickman and Elizabeth Rentfrow is well proven, I've heard of several Hensley and Rentfrow descendants who refuse to accept it as truth. Keep in mind that Hickman Hensley and Elizabeth Rentfrow were just as human as we are today. Many researchers tend to deify their ancestors, and think of them as perfect and above reproach. Our ancestors could be many things, but never perfect. Whatever they did, and for whatever reason, be glad for it, for a lot of wonderful people are on this earth today because of it. I myself (while not related to this particular family) am here, in part, due to several illegitimate births. I would wager that all people have this "phenomena" in their ancestry somewhere, whether acknowledged or not.

Hickman Hensley and most of his children (if not all of them) left Buncombe Co, NC for central Tennessee around 1803-1804 or thereabouts. They settled in an area that is today Lewis County, Tennessee, but at that time and in the years up to the 1840's was a border area between several counties, particularly Maury and Hickman Counties. It is possible they settled a little further west first of all, in what became Wayne County, then moved back just a few miles to what is now Lewis County.

Unfortunately, the 1810 census is lost for Tennessee, so I can't confirm where Hickman was residing at that time.

Hickman Hensley and Elizabeth Rentfrow's last child was born 2 May 1815, so we know he was alive up to that point (or at least 9 months prior), but I don't know when he died.

Hickman Hensley was not listed on the 1820 census in Tennessee. However, Elizabeth Rentfrow was listed as Head of household in Hickman Co, TN in 1820. Although she was head of household, she did have a male over age 45 with her. I feel this might be Hickman Hensley. If he was feeble, or senile, or otherwise disabled, she would legally be the head of household, even if he was living. I can't help but wonder how Hickman Hensley felt about living in "Hickman County".

Elizabeth Rentfrow moved to Fayette Co, IL before 1830. She was listed there on the 1830 census. I don't have the enumerations yet.

Effingham County, Illinois was created for Fayette in 1831 taking the area where the Rentfrows resided.

I believe she was still living in 1850, and residing with her son Thomas Jefferson Rentfrow in Effingham Co, IL, but listed as Elizabeth Ruther age 75, born VA. This might not be her, but I feel that is. See Thomas' entry below for more on that.

For some reason, his death, and Elizabeth's death date was not recorded in the Family Bible. Here is that Family Bible Record (thanks to Jerry R. Hensley and Dale Donnel). Note that "Elisabeth" was consistently misspelled.

Children

Hickman Hensley and Agness Fisher had several children, only one proven, and Hickman Hensley and Elizabeth Rentfrow had 9 children, all named in his Family Bible. Larkin Hensley is the only proven Hensley child, and the proof is his family bible. Larkin, William, Samuel and James are mentioned in an early history of Lawrence Co, TN (Goodspeed), as being brothers, but there were several James Hensley's in the area, so it isn't entirely clear which was which. There was another Hickman Hensley Family Bible (dated 1795) that is no longer extant, or if it is, I don't know who has it. If it could be located, then perhaps all of his Hensley children could be proven. For some reason, some researchers include Lemuel Hensley (1780/90) as a son of Hickman, though I'm quite sure this is incorrect.

Larkin Hensley was born 22 May 1779 in Henry Co, VA. His birth date and parents names (Hickman and Agness) are recorded in his family bible. Larkin may have been named after the elder Larkin Hensley (bef 1761-c1805) (my ancestor), but I have not found any relationship (so far) between the Hickman Hensley family and the Larkin Hensley (Sr) family. It may just be a coincidence that he was named Larkin.

Larkin (1779) was apparently home with his parents for the 1790 census (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90) and for the 1800 census (age 16-25, born ca 1774/84).

Larkin Hensley moved to central Tennessee ca 1806, and settled in that area. He married Margaret Hinson about that same time.

Samuel Hensley was born ca 1779/1780 in Burke (now Yancey) County, North Carolina. His birth date of "ca 1780" is based on his 1850 census record showing him to be 70 years old. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1790 census (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90) and for the 1800 census (age 10-15, born ca 1784/90). The 1800 record is not a perfect age match for Samuel.

No direct proof has been found that Samuel is a son of Hickman Hensley, but in Goodspeed History of Lawrence Co, TN he is listed as a brother of Larkin, who is a proven son of Hickman. Samuel did live in the same area, so it seems highly likely that he belongs to this family.

Samuel married ca 1814 in TN to Nancy Walker Ramsey, widow of William Ramsey. Samuel was listed on the 1820 Wayne Co, TN census, and 1830 and 1840 Hickman Co, TN (in the section that became Lewis Co, TN in 1843). Sometime in the 1840's they moved to Effingham Co, IL where he was listed on the 1850 census. Before 1855 they moved to neighboring Shelby Co, IL where he and his wife Nancy both died about that time. Samuel and Nancy had several children (per the 1820 thru 1840 census) that haven't been accounted for.

William Hensley was born ca 1784/85 in Burke (later Buncombe, now Yancey) Co, NC. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1790 census (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90) and for the 1800 census (age 10-15, born ca 1784/94).

William went to TN and married Nancy (Gardner?) before 1810. It isn't known if they married in NC or TN. Her maiden name isn't proven.

No direct proof has been found that William is a son of Hickman Hensley, but in Goodspeed History of Lawrence Co, TN he is listed as a brother of Larkin, who is a proven son of Hickman. William did live in the same area, so it seems highly likely that he belongs to this family.

James F. Hensley was born ca 1789/90 in Burke (later Buncombe, now Yancey) Co, NC. The "F" may stand for Fisher, as his maternal grandfather was named James Fisher. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1790 census (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90) and for the 1800 census (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800).

No direct proof has been found that James is a son of Hickman Hensley, but in Goodspeed History of Lawrence Co, TN he is listed as a brother of Larkin, who is a proven son of Hickman. James did live in the same area, so it seems highly likely that he belongs to this family.

James married Catherine (---) ca 1820 in Wayne Co, TN. They were listed on the 1820 Wayne Co, TN census, and the 1830 and 1840 Maury Co, TN census. In 1843 Lewis County was created from part of Maury, and he fell into the new county. He was listed on Lewis Co, TN census in 1850 and 1860.

Unknown Daughter (bef 1790). In 1790 Hickman Hensley had 3 females with him. One of those was presumably his wife Agness, while the other two were probably daughters. The 1790 census did not give ages for the females, so all I know is that she was born prior to 1790. She was not still with Hickman for the 1800 census, so apparently married or died before then.

Unknown Daughter (1790/1800). Hickman Hensley had an apparent daughter this age with him on the 1800 census (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800). I don't know who she was, or if she went to TN with him in the ca 1805 timeframe.

Jesse Rentfrow was born 29 Jan 1794 (per Hickman Hensley Family Bible-1815) in Buncombe (now Yancey) Co, NC. He was apparently home with Hickman Hensley for the 1800 census (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800).

Presumably, Jesse went to TN with the family ca 1805. The 1810 census for most of Tennessee is lost, so I don't know if Jesse was still home with his parents then.

Jesse was apparently not with his mother Elizabeth Rentfrow in 1820 Hickman Co, TN. That means that he was either married or dead by then, or just living elsewhere.

There is a Jesse Renfrow listed on the 1820 census in Madison Co, IL who probably isn't this Jesse.

In 1830, there was a Jesse Rentfrow listed in Maury Co, TN (bordered Hickman County). There was also a Jesse Rentfrow in Fayette Co, IL with an Eli and Elizabeth Rentfrow on the same page (his mother and brother?). In 1830 there was still a Jesse Rentfrow in Madison Co, IL (as in 1820). If any of these are this same Jesse (1794) I would have to guess that the one in Maury Co, TN or the one in Fayette Co, IL are the most likely suspects. I don't have the enumerations yet to be sure how old any of these are, to see if they fit or not.

Rhoda Rentfrow was born 27 Jan 1796 (per Hickman Hensley Family Bible-1815) in Buncombe (now Yancey) Co, NC. She was apparently home with Hickman Hensley for the 1800 census (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800).

Presumably, Rhoda went to TN with the family ca 1805. I have no further record of her though, whether she married, or died young. She did not seem to be home with her mother Elizabeth for the 1820 census.

Rodice Rentfrow was born 3 Aug 1798 (per Hickman Hensley Family Bible-1815) in Buncombe (now Yancey) Co, NC. She was apparently home with Hickman Hensley for the 1800 census (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800). She was known as "Dica" for a nickname.

Rodice married Richard Cohea (or "Cohee") before 1820 in TN, possibly Hickman or Maury County.

I have not found a marriage record, but there is proof of the marriage. In 1881, John F. Hensley (1825) (a Minister of the Gospel) made an affidavit in Effingham Co, IL stating that he knew Richard Cohee and wife Disa Cohee. He states that she was a "Renfrow" before marriage, and that she was his "half aunt" and that in the Bible of his grandfather Hickman Hensley (1759), Dica's birth was recorded as 3 Aug 1798. The affidavit was in regard to Dica's application for a Pension based on Richard's War of 1812 service. (Thanks to Dale Donnel and Jerry R. Hensley for sharing that with me).

I have not yet located Richard Cohea on the 1820 or 1830 census, though I suspect he was in Hickman or Maury Co, TN in those years, though possibly in IL already by 1830.

Richard and Dica moved to Effingham Co, IL sometime between ca 1829 and ca 1834.

Richard Cohea was listed on the 1840 census in Effingham, on the same page with James Cohea (his son). I don't have the enumerations yet.

Richard and Dica and family were listed on the 1850 census in Effingham Co, IL, two houses from James Cohea, their son. They were only 14 houses from Dica's half brother Samuel Hensley (1780).

Joseph Rentfrow was born 3 Jan 1802 (per Hickman Hensley Family Bible-1815) in Buncombe (now Yancey) Co, NC. He went with the family to Central Tennessee ca 1805.

Joseph may have been, or might not have been home with his mother for the 1820 census. She had one apparent son age 16-25 (c1794/1804) who was also age 16-17 (c1802/04). This could be Joseph or his brother John-1804. There isn't room for both of them. Since Joseph would most likely have been 18 already by the time of the 1820 census, then I suspect this was not him. He may have been living elsewhere as a laborer, or student.

I found several Joseph Rentfrow's in 1830, and I don't know which, if any were this Joseph.

Joseph Rentfrow married Malinda --- before 1836, possibly in TN, or perhaps in Effingham Co, IL.

Joseph was listed on the 1840 census index for Effingham Co, IL. I don't have the enumerations yet.

Joseph Rentfrow was listed on the 1850 census in Effingham Co, IL, just 2 houses from his brother Madison Rentfrow.

John Rentfrow was born 27 May 1804 (per Hickman Hensley Family Bible-1815) in Buncombe (now Yancey) Co, NC. He went with the family to central Tennessee ca 1805.

John may have been, or might not have been home with his mother for the 1820 census. She had one apparent son age 16-25 (c1794/1804) who was also age 16-17 (c1802/04). This could be John or his brother Joseph-1802. There isn't room for both of them. Since Joseph would most likely have been 18 already by the time of the 1820 census, then I suspect this was not him. He may have been living elsewhere as a laborer, or student, so that would make this John home with his mother.

For the 1830 census, there was a John Rentfrow listed in Hickman Co, TN, and two listed in Maury Co, TN. I don't have the enumerations yet, so I don't know which of these is this John. I suspect the one in Hickman County is him.

John Rentfrow married Cynthia --- before 1831, presumably in Hickman Co, TN.

John Rentfrow was listed on the 1840 census index in Hickman Co, TN. I don't have the enumerations yet.

In 1843, Lewis County was created from parts of Hickman, Maury, Wayne and Lawrence Counties, including where the Rentfrows were living.

Eli Rentfrow was born 8 Mar 1807 (per Hickman Hensley Family Bible-1815) in Hickman (now Lewis) Co, TN.

Eli was apparently home with his mother for the 1820 census in Hickman Co, TN (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10).

Eli Rentfrow married Eliza --- before 1827 in Hickman (now Lewis) Co, TN. I don't know what her maiden name might have been.

Eli and some members of his family moved to Fayette Co, IL before 1830. They probably lived in the part of Fayette that was cut off to form Effingham County in 1831.

Eli Rentfrow was listed on the 1830 census in Fayette Co, IL on the same page with Elizabeth Rentfrow (his mother) and Jesse Rentfrow his brother. I don't have the enumerations yet.

In 1843, Lewis County was created from parts of Hickman, Maury, Wayne and Lawrence Counties, including where the Rentfrows were living.

Eli Rentfrow was listed on the 1850 census in Lewis Co, TN. He was just a few houses from his half brother Larkin Hensley and several of his Hensley cousins.

Eli and family were still in Lewis Co, TN for the 1860 census next door to John G. Hensley (c1807). The Brewers who were with Eli in 1850 were still there, but listed as Rentfros this time.

Levi Rentfrow was born 1 Sep 1809 (per Hickman Hensley Family Bible-1815) in Hickman (now Lewis) Co, TN.

Levi was apparently home with his mother for the 1820 census in Hickman Co, TN (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10).

I don't have Levi on the 1830 census yet, so he might have been home with his mother in Fayette Co, IL (I don't have the enumerations for that yet). If he was in IL with his mother, he came back to Hickman Co, TN before 1835.

Levi Rentfrow obtained a marriage bond on 22 Aug 1835 in neighboring Lawrence Co, TN to marry Elizabeth Pickard. The marriage license was dated 25 Aug 1835, so presumably they married on that day or shortly afterwards. (Marriage records from Lawrence Co, TN GenWeb page).

Levi was listed on the 1840 census in Effingham Co, IL. I don't have the enumerations yet.

Levi was listed on the 1850 census in Effingham Co, IL just a few houses from his brother Thomas J. Rentfrow. For some reason, the census taker misspelled his surname as "Renthouse", however, I am positive this is Levi Rentfrow.

Thomas Jefferson Rentfrow was born 27 Jul 1812 per Hickman Hensley Family Bible-1815) in Hickman (now Lewis) Co, TN.

Thomas was apparently home with his mother for the 1820 census in Hickman Co, TN (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20).

I don't have Thomas on the 1830 census yet, so he might have been home with his mother in Fayette Co, IL (I don't have the enumerations for that yet).

Thomas was listed on the 1840 census in Effingham Co, IL as "T. J. Rentfrow", but I don't have the enumerations yet.

Thomas was listed on the 1850 census in Effingham Co, IL just a few houses from his brother Levi Rentfrow and next door to Hickman Hensley (c1815), probably a close relative. The census taker made all kinds of weird mistakes on this census. I'm sure that the version I looked at was the hand copy that he made (the originals were not the ones submitted to the Federal Government), and he made a lot of mistakes when copying it. First of all, of the several Rentfrow's listed in 1850 Effingham, they were all spelled differently: Renfro, Benfro, Renthouse, etc. I mention this because in 1850, Thomas had a woman named "Elizabeth Ruther" age 75 residing with him. In all likelihood, this is his mother, Elizabeth Rentfrow. However, it clearly says Ruther. It is possible this isn't his mother, but someone else instead, however, it seems reasonable that it is his mother and that the census taker wrote it down wrong when making his duplicate copy.

James Madison Rentfrow was born 2 May 1815 (per Hickman Hensley Family Bible-1815) in Hickman (now Lewis) Co, TN. The Bible record shows him only as "Madison" as does most of the other records I've found. However, when he married the first time, he was listed as "James M.", and for the second time (in 1889) he listed his name as "J. M. Rentfrow". He went by "Madison", presumably because he had a half brother named James Hensley.

Madison was apparently home with his mother for the 1820 census in Hickman Co, TN (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20).

I don't have Madison on the 1830 census yet, so he might have been home with his mother in Fayette Co, IL (I don't have the enumerations for that yet).

"James M. Rentfrow" married Pernisy McWhorter on 11 Jan 1842 in Effingham Co, IL. On the 1850 census, she was listed as "Malinda", so presumably her name was Malinda Pernisy McWhorter, or something like that. It is possible that Malinda was a different wife, but I don't think so, because when he married again in 1889, he listed that as his 2nd marriage (on the marriage license).

They were listed on the 1850 census in Effingham Co, IL just two houses from his brother Joseph Rentfrow, however, his surname clearly was written as "Benfro", and his brother Joseph, just two houses away was "Renfrow".

I have no data on them beyond this point, other than his second marriage dated 16 Sep 1889 in Effingham Co, IL, where on the application, he stated he was 73 years old, and he was a son of Hickman Hensley and Lizzey Rentfrow. His second wife was Sarah Tarrant, a widow, who's maiden name was Skipper (all this data is from the marriage license shared by Jerry Hensley). They were married by John F. Hensley (c1825).
