Jobe Hensley (c1823) and --- and Lucinda Brown of Lewis Co, TN

Jobe Hensley was born ca 1822/23 (per 1860 census) or ca 1819/20 (per 1880 census) in Tennessee, probably in Hickman County or Wayne County (now Lewis County) where he was living later on.

The family apparently lived in that part of Hickman County that is now Lewis County, but went through several changes over the years. It was Hickman County until 1817 when Wayne County was formed. They were in that county for awhile, but then back in Hickman later on (before 1830), and there until Lewis County was formed in 1843.

Since Jobe's birth year is not known precisely, census analysis has been a little difficult. If he was born ca 1819/20, then that could explain some apparent discrepancies, Jobe Hensley was possibly home with his parents for the 1820 census. He would have been under 1 year old, so should be in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1810/20). Larkin Hensley was listed in Wayne County that year and had three apparent sons in that age group, one of them was possibly Jobe.

Jobe was still apparently home with Larkin for the 1830 census. They were in Hickman County, and Jobe was about 10 years old, and Larkin did have two apparent sons age 10-14 (born ca 1815/20), one of which was probably Jobe.

Jobe Hensley was still probably home with his parents for the 1840 census. He would have been about 19 or 20 years old, and Larkin Hensley had one apparent son age 15-19 (born ca 1820/25) with him that year, who was probably Jobe.

Jobe Hensley married someone prior to ca 1843 in Hickman (now Lewis) Co, TN. I have not found any record of his wife's name.

Lewis County was created in 1843 from parts of several counties including the section of Hickman County where Jobe Hensley and family resided.

I did not locate them on the 1850 census, though presumably they were in Tennessee somewhere, based on the birth places of their children.

Jobe's wife died sometime between ca 1854 and 1860, presumably in Lewis County, Tennessee.

Jobe and family were in Lewis County, Tennessee for the 1860 census, next door to his parents.

On 11 Apr 1865, Sampson's father Larkin Hensley made his Will in Lewis County, naming his heirs, including his son "Jobe".

Jobe and children were still in Lewis County for the 1870 census, listed next door to brother George W. Hensley (c1828). There were several young children with them who are probably grandchildren, unless Jobe had remarried in the 1860's. The Mary A. Hensley living with him is presumably his daughter, and not a new wife, though I could be mistaken about that. I don't know who these grandchildren belong to. None of them were with Jobe in 1880.

Jobe Hensley married Lucinda Brown on 21 Jun 1880 in Lewis Co, TN. Lucinda was born ca 1834/35 in TN. I don't know who her parents were.

They were listed in Lewis County for the 1880 census, in Palestine Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Children

Jobe and his first wife had at least 5 children per the various census records. In 1870 Jobe had 4 "new" children living with him, who I suspect were grandkids, though it is possible they were his own. I don't know if Jobe and 2nd wife Lucinda had any children. Since I don't have the 1850 census record for Jobe, it is possible he had daughters who were born in the early 1840's but were married prior to 1860, so not with him on that census.

Samuel U. Hensley was born ca 1842/43 in Hickman (now Lewis) Co, TN. He was home with his father for the 1860 census ("Samuel U." age 17).

In 1870, Samuel was living with the Richard J. Dabbs (c1838) and Winny Dabbs (c1843) family. He seems to have been a hired laborer.

Mary A. Hensley was born ca 1844/45 in Lewis Co, TN. She was home with her father for the 1860 census ("Mary A." age 15), and still home in 1870 ("Mary A." age 24), but gone by 1880 so probably married or dead by then.

I did not find any likely marriage records for Mary in the 1870-1880 timeframe in Lewis Co, TN.

Margaret M. Hensley was born ca 1847/48 in Lewis Co, TN. She was home with her father for the 1860 census ("Margaret M." age 12), but gone by 1870 so probably married or dead by then.

I found a marriage record dated 8 Feb 1866 for "Margaret M. Hensley" and Joseph K. Hensley in Lewis Co, TN. Joseph was her first cousin, born ca 1844/45, son of John A. Hensley (c1812).

They were still in Lewis County for the 1880 census in Palestine Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Martha J. Hensley was born ca 1851/52 in Lewis Co, TN. She was home with her father for the 1860 census ("Martha J." age 8), and still home in 1870 ("Martha J." age 19), but gone by 1880 so probably married or dead by then.

I found a marriage record dated 29 Dec 1874 for a "Martha J. Hensley" and Green Hinson in Lewis County. I did not find them on the 1880 census, so I don't know if this is the same Martha or not.

Vicey C. Hensley was born ca 1853/54 in Lewis Co, TN. She was home with her father for the 1860 census ("Vicey C." age 6), but gone by 1870 so probably married or dead by then.

Margaret J. Hensley was born ca 1861/62 in Lewis Co, TN. It is very likely that she was a grandchild instead of a child since Jobe already had a daughter named "Margaret M.". This Margaret was home with Jobe for the 1870 census ("Margaret J." age 8), but gone by 1880 so probably married or dead by then, or living elsewhere.

Nancy C. Hensley was born ca 1864/65 in Lewis Co, TN. It is very likely that she was a grandchild instead of a child since Jobe had no apparent wife at this time. Nancy was home with Jobe for the 1870 census ("Nancy C." age 5), but gone by 1880 so probably married or dead by then, or living elsewhere.

Cynthia C. Hensley was born ca 1867/68 in Lewis Co, TN. It is very likely that she was a grandchild instead of a child since Jobe had no apparent wife at this time. She was home with Jobe for the 1870 census ("Cynthia C." age 2), but gone by 1880 so probably married or dead by then, or living elsewhere.

There was a "C. E. Hensley" age 15 (c1865) living with Margaret Hensley (widow of Larkin-1779) in 1880, listed as "Granddaughter". I'm not sure if "C. E." is the same person as Cynthia C.", but it could be.

Hickman T. Hensley was born ca 1869/70 in Lewis Co, TN. It is very likely that he was a grandchild instead of a child since Jobe had no apparent wife at this time. He was home with Jobe for the 1870 census ("Hickman T." age 6 months), but gone by 1880 so probably dead by then, or living elsewhere.
