Larkin Hensley (1779) and Margaret Hinson of VA, Buncombe and Yancey Co, NC, Wayne, Hickman and Lewis Co, TN

Larkin Hensley was born 22 May 1779 (per Bible Record) in Virginia (per 1850 census), probably Henry County, Virginia, where his father was known to be in 1778, so probably still there in 1779.

The aforementioned Bible record is not complete, nor does it seem to be Larkin's own Bible, for only his information was given, and then the next data was on some folks born in the 1850's through 1880's, so it probably belonged to a grandchild or more distant relative of Larkin. The wording was "Larking Hensley son of Hickman Hensley and Agness Hensley was born the 22 day of May 1779". At the moment, I don't recall who shared this with me, but I think it was Mike Hensley. I'll dig through my notes to figure that out. I believe a scan of this bible page can be found on the Internet somewhere. I'll try to find the link and include it here. Another bible record, probably belonging to a different set of grandkids, also records Larkin's birth date, agreeing with the one already quoted.

Larkin Hensley is a son of Hickman Hensley (c1759) and Agness Fisher as proven by the above mentioned bible record. In Goodspeed's History of Tennessee (1887) he mentioned the early settlers of Lewis County, Tennessee including: "Larkin Hensley and his brothers (William, Samuel and James)". This record does not give their parents names, but it does seem to confirm what circumstantial evidence already shows.

There have been some attempts to claim a connection between this Larkin Hensley (1779) and my ancestor Larkin Hensley (c1761) of Washington Co, VA. I've not found any proof that they were related, but it is entirely possible that the younger Larkin was named after the elder, and that they are probably cousins.

Larkin's parents moved from Henry Co, VA to Washington Co, VA between 1778 and 1784, and were to present day Yancey County, NC by the late 1780's, then still part of Burke County, and soon (in 1791) to be part of Buncombe County. I imagine that Larkin was still under 10 years old when that last move was made, and he did most of his growing up in what is now Yancey County, NC.

Larkin Hensley was probably home with his parents for the 1790 census. He would have been about 11 years old, so probably in the "under 16" age group (born ca 1774/90). Hickman Hensley had 4 apparent sons that age with him in Burke County in 1790, one of them certainly was Larkin.

Larkin should have been home in 1800 as well. He would have been about 21 years old, so should be enumerated in the 16-25 age group (born ca 1774/84). Hickman Hensley was in Buncombe Co, NC that year and had one apparent son in that age group, which was probably Larkin.

There are several deed records for Larkin Hensley in Buncombe Co, NC (dated 1800, 1803, 1803 and 1806) for land on Caney River. I don't have the full details of these deeds yet.

Hickman and his children (including Larkin) all moved to what is now Lewis County, Tennessee around 1808. At that time the area was still part of Hickman, Maury and Wayne Counties.

Larkin Hensley married Margaret Hinson probably in Maury (now Lewis) County, Tennessee sometime before ca 1808. It is also possible that they married in North Carolina prior to moving to Tennessee. I've never seen an actual record showing Margaret's maiden name, but Laura Schreibman mentioned Margaret's death record giving her parents as Meril and Sarah Hinson. Margaret was born ca 1788/89 (per 1850 census), or 15 Dec 1788 when calculating her age at death from the above mentioned death record, dated 1 May 1881 giving her age as 92 years, 4 months, and 16 days. She was born in North Carolina, but I have no idea what county. I did not find any Hinsons (or Hensons) in Buncombe Co, NC in 1800.

Larkin Hensley should have been listed on the 1810 census in Maury County, Tennessee, but unfortunately this census was lost for 99% of Tennessee. He might also have still been with his parents then.

The area where Larkin and family resided is in present Lewis County, I don't know which parent county they lived in at that time, as the Hensleys were found in the corner area of three counties: Maury, Hickman and Wayne.

Larkin Hensley was listed on the 1820 census in Wayne County, Tennessee. There were many other Hensleys in Wayne County at that time, but none listed nearby. He was listed between James Cooper and William Austin. The nearest Hensley was Washington Hensley, (his 1st cousin), 2 pages away.

Larkin either moved before 1830, or else the county lines changed somewhat, for then he was found in Hickman County, Tennessee, presumably in the part that later became Lewis County. He was between William Story and Noah Harwell. He was three houses from his brother Samuel Hensley (1780) and on the same page (but several houses) from John G. Hensley (c1807), probably Larkin's nephew.

Larkin Hensley was in Hickman County for the 1840 census. He was listed between his son James F. Hensley (1810) and Andrew Johnson and near several other relatives. For some reason, the enumerations for Larkin's household do not include Larkin himself, though he ought to have been listed in the age 60-69 category, but was not. For some reason, he was left out of his own household!

In 1843, Lewis County was created from portions of several counties, including Hickman County where Larkin Hensley lived.

Larkin and family were listed on the 1850 census in Lewis County, near many of their children.

Larkin and Margaret were still in Lewis for the 1860 census, listed two houses from his brother William Hensley (c1785) and next to his son Jobe Hensley. The youngest member of the household was either "Larkin Fain", or perhaps "Larkin Fain Hensley", but they way it was written looked more like "Fain" is his surname.

On 11 Apr 1865, Larkin Hensley made his Will in Lewis Co, TN. He named his wife Margaret, and sons Jobe Hensley, Lewis L. Hensley, daughter Nancy Higgins, son James Hensley, son John Hensley, deceased daughter Elizabeth Baker, son Sampson Hensley, daughter Sary Hambrick, son Pleasant K. Hensley, son George Hensley, daughters Mary J. Hensley and Sintha Hensley. Witnesses were John M. Sharp and William P. Sharp. The Will was proven in January Court, 1867. (Thanks to Zia Miller for sharing a transcript of this Will).

The above Will shows that Larkin Hensley died sometime between April 1865 and January 1867.

Margaret was still in Lewis County for the 1880 census. The transcription of this census has Margaret and daughter Jane's names mixed up, giving Jane as the mother, and Margaret as the daughter, but it is obviously the same family. I'm not sure if the transcription is at fault, or if the original contains the same error. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Margaret Hinson Hensley died on 1 May 1881 in Lewis Co, TN. I got this date from Laura Schreibman. She mentioned a death record giving Margaret's age as 92 years, 4 months, and 16 days, born in North Carolina, and parents "Meril and Sarah Hinson".

Children

Larkin and Margaret had 12 children per Larkin's Will, and census records seem to show additional children (who may have died before his Will was made).

Nancy Hensley was born ca 1807/08 (per 1850 census) in Hickman (now Lewis) Co, TN. She was named in her father's 1865 Will as "Nancy Higgins". Nancy was apparently home with her parents for the 1820 census in Wayne Co, TN age 10-15 (born ca 1804/10), but gone by 1830, so probably married by then.

Nancy Hensley married James Higgins before 1830 in Hickman (now Lewis) Co, TN. James was born ca 1805/06 in North Carolina (possibly in Buncombe, now Yancey Co, NC). I don't know who James' parents were.

James and Nancy moved to Clark County, Illinois shortly after marriage. They were listed there on the 1830 census near several other Higgins, presumably James' relatives. They were also Edmond Baker, who was married to Nancy's sister Elizabeth Hensley.

Later in 1830, Coles County was formed from part of Clark County, presumably taking the section where the Higgins family lived (or else they moved into that county afterwards).

James Higgins was listed on the 1840 census in Coles County, Illinois. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

They were listed on the 1850 census in Lewis County just two houses from her brother Lewis L. Hensley.

Apparently James Higgins died before 1880, for that year Nancy was a widow living with a married daughter in Lewis Co, TN. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Elizabeth Hensley was born ca 1807/08 (per 1850 census) in Hickman (now Lewis) Co, TN. She was named in her father's 1865 Will as "Elizabeth Baker, deceased". Elizabeth was apparently home with her parents for the 1820 census in Wayne Co, TN age 10-15 (born ca 1804/10), but gone by 1830, so probably married by then.

Elizabeth Hensley married Edmond Baker before 1830 in Hickman (now Lewis) Co, TN. Edmond was born ca 1800/10. I don't know where he was born, nor who his parents were.

Edmond and Elizabeth moved to Clark County, Illinois shortly after marriage. They were listed there on the 1830 census next to James Higgins (and wife Nancy Hensley).

Later in 1830, Coles County was formed from part of Clark County, presumably taking the section where the Baker family lived.

By ca 1837, the Bakers had returned to Tennessee, and were listed on the 1840 census in Hickman County, TN. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Elizabeth Hensley Baker and her children were listed on the 1850 census in Lewis Co, TN.

James F. Hensley was born ca 1809/10 in Hickman (now Lewis) Co, TN. I'm not sure if "F" is his correct middle initial. This is from the 1850 census, but the 1840 census shows him with "L" middle initial.

James married Permelia --- between ca 1830 and ca 1835 in Hickman (now Lewis Co, TN). See his own page for additional information.

John A. Hensley was born ca 1811/12 in Hickman (now Lewis) Co, TN. He was named in his father's 1865 Will as "John".

It has occurred to me that since there were two John Hensley's in the area, and that Larkin's Will did not give his son "John" a middle initial, that I might have the wrong one assigned to Larkin. I chose John A. Hensley (c1812) instead of John G. Hensley (c1807) for several reasons. First of all, John A. Hensley fits better per census analysis, and was also always near Larkin in the various census records. John G. Hensley was also near Larkin in several census records, so that point is not conclusive. Anyway, I bring this up to show that there is a slim chance that John G. Hensley could be Larkin's son "John" instead of John A. Hensley being the one.

Sarah Hensley was born ca 1812/13 (I'm not sure the source for this date) in Hickman (now Lewis) Co, TN. She was named in her father's 1865 Will as daughter "Sary Hambrick". She was apparently home with Larkin in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and still apparently home in 1830 (age 15-19, born ca 1810/15).

According to her father's Will, Sarah was married to a Mr. Hambrick. I don't know his given name, but it looks like they may have married between 1830 and ca 1834, presumably in Hickman (now Lewis) Co, TN. Her first child was born ca 1834, and her last born ca 1838.

It would seem that Mr. Hambrick died between ca 1838 and 1840, for it appears that Sarah was probably back home with her parents for the 1840 census, though I can't be sure of that. Larkin did have an apparent daughter with him then: age 20-29, (born ca 1810/20), and young children the ages of Sarah's three known children, so it is quite possible (and likely) that she was back home in 1840.

Sarah was listed on the 1850 census in Lewis County in District 7 (not close to any other Hensleys).

I don't have her in 1860 or later, but descendant Zia Miller tells me that Sarah was in Wayne Co, TN in 1870, and in Dallas Co, Texas by 1880, and still living as late as ca 1903.

Unknown Son (1815/20). Larkin Hensley had an apparent son this age. It is possible that this is actually Jobe Hensley (see below), if his birth of ca 1823 is incorrect. It might be incorrect, as at least one census gives his birth at ca 1819/20. Assuming this isn't Jobe, then this son is unidentified, and probably died young. He was apparently home with Larkin for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), but gone by 1830 so probably married or dead by then. In 1830, there was an "extra" male with Larkin in the age 10-14 group (born ca 1815/20), however, I feel this has to be Jobe as there wasn't enough room for him in the other age groups.

All in all, I feel this son (c1815/20) is not an unidentified son, but is actually Jobe Hensley. See his section below for more on him.

Sampson Hensley was born ca 1818/19 in Wayne (now Lewis) Co, TN. He was named in his father's 1865 Will as son "Sampson Hensley".

Sampson Hensley married Nancy --- before ca 1842, then moved to Van Buren County, Arkansas before 1850. See his own page for additional information.

Mary Jane Hensley was born ca 1819/20 in Wayne (now Lewis) Co, TN. She was named in her father's 1865 Will as daughter "Mary J. Hensley". Jane was apparently home with her parents in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and still apparently home in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20), and apparently still home in 1840 (age 20-29, born ca 1810/20), and home in 1850 ("Jane" age 30), and home in 1860 ("Jane" age 36), and still with her mother in 1870 ("Jane" age 33), getting progressively younger!

In 1880, she was listed as head of household in Lewis Co, TN, though on the transcription, her name and her mothers were mixed, giving Jane's age as 92, and her mother's as 65. It is obvious that Jane should be 65.

Unknown Daughter (1820/25). Larkin Hensley had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25), but gone by 1840, so probably married or dead by then.

Since no "extra" daughters were named in Larkin's 1865 Will, I can probably safely conclude that this daughter died young, or else this wasn't a daughter at all, but someone else living with the family.

Jobe Hensley was born ca 1822/23 (per 1860 census) or ca 1819/20 (per 1880 census) in Wayne (now Lewis) Co, TN. He was named in his father's 1865 Will as son "Jobe Hensley".

Jobe Hensley married someone unknown, before ca 1841. I did not find them in 1850. His wife died before ca 1860. He married again in 1880 to Lucinda Brown. See his own page for additional information.

Cynthia Hensley was born ca 1824 in Hickman (now Lewis) Co, TN. She was named in her father's 1865 Will as daughter "Sintha Hensley". Cynthia was apparently home with her parents in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25), and apparently still home in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25), and home in 1850 ("Cynthia" age 24), and home in 1860 ("Cynthia" age 32), and still with her mother in 1870 ("Cintha" age 44). She was still home in 1880 ("Cyntha" age 56).

** I have not looked for her on the 1900 and 1910 census yet, but presumably she was in Lewis Co, TN still.

Cynthia Hensley died 9 Apr 1912 at Dry Branch in Lewis Co, TN, age 98, according to her death record. The record did not give her parents names. (Found online at the Lewis Co, TN GenWeb page).

Pleasant K. J. Hensley was born ca 1826/27 (per 1850 census) in Hickman (now Lewis) Co, TN. He was named in his father's 1865 Will as son "Pleasant K. Hensley".

Pleasant Hensley married Lucinda Baker in 1847 in Lewis Co, TN, then moved to Searcy County, Arkansas, eventually returning to Lewis Co, TN. See his own page for additional information.

Lewis L. Hensley was born ca 1827/28 (per 1850 census) in Hickman (now Lewis) Co, TN. He was named in his father's 1865 Will as son "Lewis L. Hensley".

George W. Hensley was born ca 1827/28 (per 1850 census) in Hickman (now Lewis) Co, TN. He was named in his father's 1865 Will as son "George Hensley". George seems to have been home with his parents in 1830 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and seems to be with them in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30), and was home with them in 1850 ("George W." age 22).

George W. Hensley married Hannah --- between 1850 and ca 1858. I didn't find a marriage record in Lewis County, nor Wayne County, Tennessee, where they were residing by 1860. Hannah was born ca 1836/37 in Tennessee. I don't know her maiden name.

George and family were listed on the 1860 census in Wayne County, Tennessee, about 20 houses from the Lewis Hensley (c1809) family.

George was named in his father's Will dated 11 Apr 1865 in Lewis Co, TN as son "George Hensley".

George and family moved back to Lewis Co, TN before 1870 and were listed there on the 1870 census next door to his widowed mother. The birth place of one of their sons, born ca 1866, shows they were in Arkansas, at least briefly, perhaps Searcy County.

George and family were in neighboring Hickman County in 1880. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Larkin T. Hensley was born ca 1831/32 (per 1850 census) in Hickman (now Lewis) Co, TN. He was not named in Larkin Hensley's 1865 Will, so that means he may have died before then, or perhaps not been a son at all, but a grandson instead. However, since Larkin (Sr) named at least one deceased child, it would seem likely he would have named Larkin T. also, if he was, in fact his son.

I believe Larkin T. Hensley is a grandson, but since I don't know his parents, I'll leave him attached to Larkin Sr for now. It is quite possible that Larkin T. Hensley is a son of John A. Hensley (c1812) as he did have an unknown son this age.

Larkin T. Hensley may have been home with Larkin Sr in 1840 (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35), though I've theorized (see Unknown son (1830/35) below) that this child with Larkin Sr in 1840 might be someone else.

On 9 Sep 1855, "Larkin T. Hensley" married Catherine Crowell in Lewis Co, TN. They were married by A. Churchwell, Justice of the Peace. Catherine was born ca 1832/33 in Tennessee, daughter of David and Christine (---) Crowell, both born in North Carolina.

Larkin "Jr" and family were listed on the 1860 census in Lewis Co, TN next door to his brother (or father) John A. Hensley (c1812).

I did not find this family in 1870, at least not in Tennessee. They must have moved away.

I found a Larkin T. Hensley age 45 (c1835 TN) in 1880 in Gallatin Co, Illinois with a new wife Juley A. (possibly Sawyers) born ca 1860, and a young child Larkin A. Hensley (c1879). This may not be the same Larkin Hensley, but the name, middle initial, age, and birth place all match. If this is him, then it means that Catherine died before 1880, and he remarried in Gallatin Co, IL.

Unknown Son (1830/35). Larkin Hensley had an apparent child this age with him for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35). Although Larkin T. Hensley (c1832) (see above) is a perfect match for this one, It is possible that this was grandson James H. Hambrick (c1835), son of Sarah Hensley Hambrick, who seems to be at home with her parents in 1840.

However, this can't be both Larkin T. Hensley (c1832) and James H. Hambrick (c1835), so it is one or the other.

Unknown Daughter (1830/35). Larkin Hensley had an apparent child this age with him for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35). She was gone by 1850, so possibly dead or married by then. It is also possible (even very likely) that this was a grandchild instead of a child. If so, she was probably back with her parents by 1850, though old enough to have married by then. However, this is just theoretical.

I think that this is quite likely granddaughter Margaret C. Hambrick (c1834), daughter of Sarah Hensley Hambrick, who seems to be at home with her parents in 1840.

Unknown Son (1835/40). Larkin Hensley had an apparent child this age with him for the 1840 census (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40). He was gone by 1850, so possibly dead by then. It is also possible (even very likely) that this was a grandson instead of a son. If so, he was probably back with his parents by 1850. However, this is just theoretical.

I think that this is quite likely grandson Robert G. Hambrick (c1838), son of Sarah Hensley Hambrick, who seems to be at home with her parents in 1840.
