James F. Hensley (c1810) and Permelia --- of Hickman and Lewis Co, TN

I (Marty Grant) am not related to James F. Hensley as far as I know.

James F. Hensley was born ca 1809/10 (per 1850 census) in Tennessee, probably in Hickman County (now Lewis County) where he was living later on. I'm not sure if his middle initial should be "F" as it was listed on the 1850 census or "L" as listed on the 1840 census.

James Hensley is a son of Larkin Hensley (1779) and Margaret Hinson and was named in Larkin's 1865 Will as his son "James Hensley".

For the 1810 census, James would be a year old or younger, if he was born yet at all. However, the point is moot because the 1810 census is lost for Tennessee.

In 1820, James would have been about 10 years old, or slightly older. He was apparently with his father that year in the age 10-15 category (born ca 1804/10).

In 1830, James would have been about 20 years old, or slightly older.  Larkin Hensley had an apparent son age 15-19 (born ca 1810/15) that year, presumably James.

James Hensley married Permelia --- ca 1830/35 in Hickman (now Lewis) Co, TN. Permelia was born ca 1814/15 in Georgia (both per 1850 census). Her maiden name is unknown. I didn't find a marriage record for them.

James "L." Hensley was listed on the 1840 census in Hickman County, Tennessee next to his father Larkin, and also next to Daniel Brewer.

In 1843, Lewis County was formed from several counties, including a portion of Hickman County, and this included the section where James Hensley and family resided.

James Hensley and family were listed on the 1850 census in Lewis County, Tennessee. He was next door to his parents, and also next to John G. Hensley (c1807), probably a 1st cousin.

I did not find James on the 1860 census. His son John D. Hensley was living in Van Buren Co, Arkansas that year, as was several of James' brothers. I did not find James himself listed there though.

James and family were in Van Buren County, Arkansas for the 1870 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

I didn't find James and family in 1880 Van Buren Co, AR. I don't know where they were that year.

Children

James and Permelia had 8 children per the various census records. I don't have much additional information on any of them yet. I did find son John D. Hensley (c1837) in Van Buren Co, AR living with another family as a laborer. Danny Shadrick mentioned three more born after 1850: Robert K-1851, James-1854 and David-1858, all born in Tennessee.
