I (Marty Grant) am not related to Hickman Hensley as far as I know.

Hickman Hensley was born ca 1814/15 in North Carolina, probably in Buncombe County (now Yancey County) where most of the Lewis County, Tennessee Hensleys originated.

I don't know who Hickman Hensley's parents are, but it seems very likely he is part of the Hickman Hensley (1759) family, and probably a grandson (or great grandson) of old Hickman.

I have a strong suspicion that Hickman is a son of Samuel Hensley (c1780) and Nancy Walker, but can't prove it.

The family apparently lived in that part of Hickman County that is now Lewis County, but went through several changes over the years. It was Hickman County until 1817 when Wayne County was formed. They were in that county for awhile, but then back in Hickman later on, and there until Lewis County was formed in 1843.

Hickman, if born in NC (as the 1850 census states), probably moved to Tennessee while very small. Assuming he was a grandchild (or somehow closely related to) old Hickman Hensley (1759), then he was probably in that four county region mentioned above.

For the 1820 census, only Michael Hensley (c1785) was in Lawrence County, Tennessee, and he does have at least one unknown son the right age to be Hickman, but I've found no connection between Michael's family and the Hickman Sr family. In 1820 Maury County, there was only William Hensley (c1785), who I'm sure is not Hickman's father. In 1820 Wayne County were several Hensleys with an apparent son Hickman's age (he would have been about 5 years old): Lemuel Hensley (c1780), but he isn't likely Hickman's father; Samuel Hensley (c1780) with 2 sons "under 10" (born ca 1810/20), one of which could be Hickman, and Washington Hensley (c1774/84) with one son "under 10".  Of these "suspects", I'd take Washington and Samuel as the top picks. Washington Hensley (a first cousin to Samuel) was still in NC in 1810, so that is a point in his favor for being Hickman's father.

For the 1830 census, Hickman would have been about 15 years old. Since that age can fit into to age groupings, he might be enumerated in the age 15-19 category (born ca 1810/15) or in the 10-14 category (born ca 1815/20). Samuel Hensley (c1780) had one son age 10-14 that year in Hickman County, Tennessee, and he seems to be the only one in the region who fits.

For the 1840 census, Hickman would have been about 25 years old, so he should have been enumerated in the 20-29 age category (born ca 1810/20). Samuel Hensley (c1780) had one son that age with him in Hickman County. He seems to still be the most likely home for Hickman.

Hickman Hensley married Sarah --- sometime before ca 1843, probably in Hickman (now Lewis) Co, TN. Sarah was born ca 1819/20 in Tennessee. I don't know her maiden name. I did not find a marriage record for them.

Sometime between ca 1848 and 1850 they moved to Effingham County, Illinois, which seems to be about the same time Samuel Hensley (c1780) moved there also.

Hickman and family were listed on the 1850 census in Effingham County, listed next door to T. J. Rentfro, who is Thomas Jefferson Rentfrow (1812) son of Hickman Hensley (1759) and Elizabeth Rentfrow. Elizabeth Rentfrow was also next door, living with son T. J.

Sometime around ca 1855, Hickman and family returned to Lewis County, Tennessee.  Coincidentally, or not, this was the same year that Samuel Hensley (1780) died.

Hickman Hensley died sometime between ca 1858 and 1860 in Lewis Co, TN.

Widow Sarah was listed as head of household on the 1860 census in Lewis County in District 6, next door to Jesse Dabbs and wife Easter (Hensley) Dabbs, daughter of John G. Hensley (1807).

On the 1870 census, Sarah and children were still in District 6, just a few houses from John G. Hensley (1807).

I didn't find them on the 1880 census.

Children

Hickman and Sarah had 7 children per the 1850 and 1860 census records. I don't have much additional data on any of them yet.
