I (Marty Grant) am not related to the Mackfield Henslee family as far as I know.
Special thanks to Cindy Stamps for sharing her extensive research on this family. Also thanks to Laura Schreibman for her research on this family and so many other Hensley families.
This family used the "Henslee" spelling most often, though some records were with the "Hensley" or other spellings. See "Hensley Spellings" for a commentary on this subject.
Mackfield Henslee (also spelled "Macksfield" or "Maxfield") was born before 1726 (per 1786 NC State census giving his age as "over 60"). He lived in Hanover County, Virginia in the 1750's, so perhaps born there as well.
I have no clue who Mackfield's parents might be. He could be connected with one of the several Benjamin Hensleys who were in or near Hanover County, Virginia. There were other Hensleys in the region as well.
Mackfield Henslee married Martha Sneed (or "Snead") sometime prior to ca 1755 possibly in Hanover County, Virginia. Her maiden name is unproven. Cindy Stamps stated that it was Family knowledge in her family about her being a "Snead", but she has not found any hard evidence to prove it, though it certainly could be correct. I have practically no data on her, no approximate birth date (though presumably about the same age as Mackfield), nor do I know who her parents are.
The first record we have for Mackfield is dated 31 Dec 1757 where Maxfield Hensley witnessed a land sale in Fredericksville Parish. (Louisa Co, VA Deed Book B page 271, thanks to Cindy Stamps)
"Maxfield Hensley" was listed on the 1763 tax list in Hanover Co, VA.
Sometime before 1777, Mackfield moved his family south to Caswell County, North Carolina, for he was listed on the 1777 tax list there.
On 3 Mar 1779 Maxfield Hinsley received a State land grant of 428 acres on Stoney Creek. (Caswell Co, NC Deed Book A page 251, shared by Laura Schreibman).
On 14 Mar 1780 Maxfield Henslee (and William Mitchell) witnessed a deed from John and Rachel Henslee to Henry Williams. (Caswell Co, NC Deed Book A page 323, shared by Laura Schreibman).
"Maxwell" Henslee was listed on the 1784 tax list in Caswell County.
"Macksfield" Henslee was listed on the 1786 tax list in Caswell County.
Macksfield Henslee was listed on the 1786 state census in Caswell County near his sons David, William and John. There was one column that was for those under 21 or over 60, and Mackfield was in this column, so he was older than 60 in 1786

Mackfield was probably listed on the 1790 census in Caswell County, but unfortunately that census is lost for this county. (The published version of the 1790 census includes a "reconstructed" census for Caswell which included Mackfield.
On 31 Dec 1794, Macksfield Henslee made his Will in Caswell County (proven in 1801) naming numerous heirs, including wife Martha, son John, (son William Henslee mentioned, but no relationship stated, he was dead by then), son David, daughter Mary Henslee, daughter Susannah Oldham, daughter Nancy Payne, granddaughter Sarah Thompson, granddaughter Elizabeth Cary Mitchell. He named sons John and David as his Executors. Witnesses were Nathan Williams, and Eli Stacy. (Caswell Co, NC Will Book D page 70, shared by Laura Schreibman).
On 23 Apr 1795 Macksfield Henslee deeded land to John Henslee (his son), being 172 acres on Stoney Creek. Witnesses were David Henslee (son) and John Mitchell. (Caswell Co, NC Deed Book J page 84, shared by Laura Schreibman).
On 25 Apr 1795 Macksfield Henslee deeded land to David Henslee (his son), being 65 acres on Stoney Creek. Witnesses were John Henslee (son) and John Mitchell. (Caswell Co, NC Deed Book J page 68, shared by Laura Schreibman).
Martha Sneed Henslee seemed to have died sometime between 1794 and 1800, for the 1800 census entry for Mackfield contained no female her age. The eldest there was age 26-44, or born ca 1755/74 which is far too young to the mother of his sons. Either that, or the census was just in error (or Martha was a 2nd wife).
Mackfield Henslee was on the 1800 census in Caswell County next to his sons John and David. It seemed to be just him and 2 daughters or granddaughters.

Mackfield Henslee died sometime in 1800 or in 1801 for his Will was proven in 1801. At that time his son John Henslee refused to qualify as Executor, but David Henslee did qualify. (Caswell Co, NC Will Book D page 70, shared by Laura Schreibman).
Mackfield and Martha had several children. His Will named five children and two grandchildren (parents not named), so that probably accounts for two more children. The Will of William Henslee proves that he was also Mackfield's son, so that makes eight children, 2 of which are apparent daughters who may have died before their father did.

John Henslee was born before 1755, probably in Hanover Co, VA. He is a proven son of Mackfield as named in his 1794 Will. John lived in Caswell Co, NC most of his life. He married Rachel Cantrel. See their own page for additional information.
William Henslee was born before 1763, (based on his first record being the 1784 tax list, and assuming he was at least 21 then). He was probably born in Hanover Co, VA. He is a proven son of Mackfield since in his own Will (dated 1793) he named his siblings John, David and others who are proven sons of Mackfield by Mackfield's Will of 1794.
It does not appear that William Henslee ever married, or if he did, his wife died before he did, leaving them no children.
William was listed on the 1784 tax list in Caswell Co, NC.
On 10 Oct 1785 William Henslee was bondsman for the marriage of Jackson George (or George Jackson?) and Francis Spencer in Caswell Co, NC.
William Henslee was listed on the 1786 tax list in Caswell County.
William Henslee was listed on the 1786 state census in Caswell County near his father Mackfield and brothers David and John.

William was probably listed on the 1790 census in Caswell County, but unfortunately that census is lost for this county. (The published version of the 1790 census includes a "reconstructed" census for Caswell which included William.
In March 1793, William Henslee and brother John Henslee were bondsmen for the Bastardy Bond of Sarah Mellery (Mallory). Interestingly he named Sarah Mallory and her daughter Elizabeth in his Will later this same year. Is this evidence that he is the father of this child born out of wedlock? (from "North Carolina Bastardy Bonds" by Betty J. Camin & Edwin A. Camin, page 49)
On 11 Oct 1793, William Henslee made his Will in Caswell County. He names: Elizabeth Mallory daughter of Sarah Mallory (no relationship to these is given), Susannah West (no relationship given), the rest of his estate to be equally divided amongst the whole of my brothers and sisters or their heirs and assigns (but does not name them). He names his brothers John Henslee and David Henslee as his Executors. Witnesses were Mahlon Stacy and John Anderson and Nathan Williams. (Caswell Co, NC Will Book C page 51, shared by Cindy Stamps).
William was dead by 29 Oct 1793, for on that date an Inventory of his Estate was made. (Caswell Co, NC Will Book C page 54, shared by Cindy Stamps).
David Henslee was born ca 1755/65, probably in Hanover Co, VA. He is a proven son of Mackfield as named in his 1794 Will. David lived in Caswell and Rockingham Co, NC then moved to Franklin County, Georgia ca 1817. David married Mary Payne. See their own page for additional information.
Mary Henslee was born ca 1755/74 (if she was the older female with Mackfield in 1800), probably in Hanover Co, VA or perhaps in Caswell County, North Carolina.. She is a proven daughter of Mackfield as named in his 1794 Will. She was apparently single in 1794, for her surname was given as "Henslee" (or she was married to a cousin of the same name).
There was a female with Mackfield Henslee in 1800 aged 26-44, (born ca 1755/74). This could very easily be Mary Henslee, if she were still single by 1800.
I have nothing else on Mary. There were no marriage records in Caswell County that might be her.
Susannah Henslee was born (date unknown) either in Hanover Co, VA or Caswell Co, NC.. She is a proven daughter of Mackfield as named in his 1794 Will as daughter "Susannah Oldham". Her husband's name was not given in the Will, nor did I find a marriage record for her in Caswell County, so I don't know who her husband is.
Susannah Henslee married Mr. Oldham sometime prior to 31 Dec 1794, probably in Caswell County, NC. There was a "Moses Oldham" who was a neighbor of the Henslees. He could be the one, or a relative of her husband.
Nancy Ann Henslee was born (date unknown) either in Hanover Co, VA or Caswell Co, NC.. She is a proven daughter of Mackfield as named in his 1794 Will as daughter "Nancy Payne". Her husband's name was not given in the Will, but I did find a marriage record for her in Caswell County.
On 5 Mar 1779, John Payne married (or obtained a marriage bond for marriage) Ann Hensley in Caswell Co, NC. "Ann" and "Nancy" are interchangeable nicknames for each other, so this is clearly the same person. Other than his marriage record, I have no additional data on them at present.
Unknown Daughter (married Thompson). In his 1794 Will, Mackfield Henslee named a granddaughter "Sara Henslee Thomson". I'm not sure if this is her full name (with the surname being "Thompson") or if she were a Henslee who had married a Thompson. In either event, it seems that this Sarah is a child of an unknown child of Mackfield. If her surname is Thompson (by birth), then it seems reasonable that her mother was a Henslee who had married a Mr. Thompson, and had died prior to 1794.
I did not find any marriage records in Caswell to account for a Henslee - Thompson marriage.
Unknown Daughter (married Mitchell). In his 1794 Will, Mackfield Henslee named a granddaughter "Elizabeth Cary Mitchell". I'm not sure if this is her full name (with the surname being "Mitchell") or if she were a "Cary" who had married a Mitchell. In either event, it seems that this Elizabeth is a child of an unknown child of Mackfield. If her surname is Mitchell (by birth), then it seems reasonable that her mother was a Henslee who had married a Mr. Mitchell, and had died prior to 1794.
I did not find any marriage records in Caswell to account for a Henslee - Mitchell marriage, however, there was both a William Mitchell and John Mitchell closely associated with the Mackfield Henslee family.
