John Henslee (bef 1755) and Rachel Cantrell of Caswell Co, NC

This family used the "Henslee" spelling most often, though some records were with the "Hensley" or other spellings. See "Hensley Spellings" for a commentary on this subject.

John Henslee was born before 1755 (per 1800 census), but probably not too much before 1755. John was probably born in Hanover County, Virginia, which is where his parents were in that timeframe.

Mackfield moved his family from Hanover Co, VA to what is now Caswell Co, NC between ca 1763 and 1777, so it would seem that John spent about half of his childhood in Virginia, the other half in North Carolina.

John Henslee married Rachel Cantrell before ca 1774 in Caswell County, North Carolina. Her maiden name is proven by the Will of her father Joseph Cantrell dated 1804 naming his daughter "Rachel Hensley". (Orange Co, NC Will Book D page 127 shared by Laura Schreibman and Cindy Stamps)

Rachel Cantrell was born ca 1755/65 per an analysis of her various census entries. She was a daughter of Joseph Cantrell. This is proven by his Will dated 3 Jan 1804. (Orange Co, NC Will Book D page 127 shared by Laura Schreibman and Cindy Stamps)

John Hensley was listed on the 1777 tax list for Caswell County, North Carolina.

On 3 Mar 1779 John Henslee received a State Land Grant for 640 acres on Stoney Creek. (Caswell Co, NC Deed Book A page 250, shared with me by Laura Schreibman)

On 14 Mar 1780, John Henslee and wife Rachel Henslee sold land to Henry Williams, being 640 acres on Stoney Creek (same land as his 1779 land grant?). Witnesses were George Barker, William Mitchell and Maxfield Henslee. (Caswell Co, NC Deed Book A page 323, shared with me by Laura Schreibman)

The 1786 State Census for North Carolina shows John Henslee in Caswell County near brothers David and William and father Mackfield.

John Henslee appears as witness to numerous deeds in the early 1800's, too many to list them all here.

John Henslee was listed on the 1810 census in Caswell Co, NC. Unfortunately, the census taker alphabetized the listing, so I can't tell who John's neighbors were, but he was listed next to son Mackfield Henslee.

John's wife Rachel died sometime prior to 1816, for she was not mentioned in his Will dated 20 Mar 1816.

On 20 Mar 1816, John Henslee made his Will in Caswell County, North Carolina naming various heirs, including sons Richard, William, John, Benjamin, Macksfield, and Thomas and daughters Sarah (no surname), Eleanor Ray, Kesiah Ray, Betsy Pleasant wife of Beaufort Pleasant. Witnesses were Thomas Pennix and John Pennix Jr. (Caswell Co, NC Will Book G page 301, shared with me by Laura Schreibman)

The above Will was proven in Court in October 1816, so John had died sometime between 20 Mar 1816 and October 1816.

On 21 Oct 1816, several of the heirs of John Henslee deeded their interest in their father's land to Buford Pleasant (their brother-in-law). The heirs were Richard Henslee, William Henslee, John Henslee, and Sally Henslee, all of Caswell County. The deed was witnessed by Thomas Garner, Micajah Pleasant, Joseph Benton and Thomas Henslee. I have no additional data on them except that she was named in her father's 1816 Will as daughter "Eleanor Ray".

Kesiah Henslee was born (date unknown) in Caswell County, North Carolina. She was probably one of the 4 females with John Henslee for the 1786 state census (no ages given).

Elizabeth Henslee was born ca 1775/94 in Caswell County, North Carolina. She was probably one of the 4 females with John Henslee for the 1786 state census (no ages given for them) if she was born prior to 1786. She was probably home in 1800 as well, though I don't know if she was the female age 16-25 (born ca 1774/84) or the one age 10-15 (born ca 1784/90). Either would fit with what I know of her birth date.

She may still be with her parents in 1810, though she would have to be enumerated in the age 10-15 category (born ca 1794/1800) which may be too young (unless she was born ca 1794).

On 31 Oct 1810, Elizabeth Henslee married Beaufort Pleasant (or Pleasants) in Caswell County, NC. Beaufort was born ca 1780/90, possibly in Caswell County.

Both Elizabeth and her husband were named in her father's Will of 1816 as "Betsy Pleasant wife of Beaufort".

They were listed on the 1820 census in Caswell County, North Carolina. This census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who their neighbors were.

Elizabeth Henslee Pleasants died sometime between 1820 and 1822, for on 21 Jan 1822 Beaufort Pleasants married her sister Sarah Henslee in Caswell Co, NC. See her listing below for more on them after 1822.

Mackfield Henslee was born 1770/75 in Caswell Co, NC. He is a proven son of John and was named in an 1811 deed as his son, and also named in John's Will of 1816.

Sarah Henslee was born ca 1794/1800 (or ca 1795/96 if she is the same Sarah found on the 1850 census). She was born in Caswell County, North Carolina. She was apparently home with her parents in 1800 (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800), and apparently still home in 1810 (age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800). She was named in her father's Will of 1816 as daughter "Sarah".

For the 1820 census, Sarah may be living with her sister Elizabeth and her husband Beaufort Pleasants, as they had an "extra" female who fits Sarah's age group (age 16-25, born ca 1794/1804).

After the death of her sister Elizabeth, Sarah Henslee married her brother-in-law Beaufort Pleasants on 21 Jan 1822 in Caswell County. Beaufort was born ca 1780/90. See Elizabeth Henslee's entry above for more on him prior to 1822.

Beaufort Pleasants apparently died between 1840 and 1850, for I found Sarah, an apparent widow, living by herself on the 1850 census in Caswell County (assuming this is the same Sarah). This may not be the same Sarah, as her very large family from 1840 was no longer with her, but here is the listing anyway, just in case.
